Hey guys,

I'm going to build a vertical 2 x 12" cab to go with my OTS with a Celestion G12-65 15ohm speaker in it. I need to find a companion speaker for it.

The Celestion has really nice lows and strong mids but the highs are a little too rolled off. I'm hoping to find a speaker that will compliment the Celestion and provide the high frequency "sparkle" that the G12-65 lacks.

Any suggestions you could provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys,

I have 2 celestion G12-65's so I'm interested in the anser as well. I read on The Gear Page forum that you need to use these speakers for a while to get their full potential.

Having tried both fully broken in, I find the EVM-12L to be a far better match for the Overtone than the G12-65. Don't know how one of each would sound, but having at least one EV would probably be better than a pair of G12-65's, although the EV may be the dominant sounding speaker......

Even a Greenback has more hi-end compared to G12-65

I like the alnico mix..Blue and G12H30 etc.  A greenback is basically a G12H30 that breaks up sooner, so try an alnico.

For wattage reasons a Red Fang at 30W would give you some sparkle that's for sure...Smooth breakup up too.  Or an Alnico Gold Celestion.  I can get a Gold for the same price of an eminence in the UK .

Some guys have used these Golds already with the Overtone in a pairing.

They could be easily sold on after if you dont like 'em.

So the prices (£155) shown are list I guess. I'll give him a ring, thinking of a Blue for my 5watt SE which needs to go into a combo. Did you get the EVM-12L from him aswell? (see my question in another thread)

How do you rate the gold alongside th EVM-12l

I find that the G12-65  has really sweet highs. Here's a sample:

hi
I would mix the 65 with either a heritage green back G12H 30 or a scumback of the equivalent.... or a pre rola greenback 20,25,or 30.
cheers

My experience of the G12-65 is that it is a lovely unit, but it's too soft & smooth.  I reckon a V30 or G12H would be a good match.

The V30 & G12H are both a lot louder than the 65 so you may want to try mismatched resistance drivers to try and even the levels out.  e.g. a 16 ohm G12H with an 8 ohm 65.

I need to try this myself, and have the drivers here I just need to get a little motivation  Cheesy

I have posted this info a couple other times, but it may be helpful here.

I have a 2 x12 cab with a V30 & G12H30. It sounds very, very good. I use it with the OTS. I also have a custom built combo amp with (2) Rola Celestion G12-65s in it.  I have A/B'd these two sets of speakers using the OTS. The V30 / G12H combo is far more articulate than the G12-65's. More solid lows and a crisper top-end.

I had the amp with G12-65's for about three years and I thought those G12-65's sounded great. Until....I compared them to the V30/G12H combo. When I play with all 4 speakers the G12-65's disappear in the mix. Maybe the 25W Greenback would be the best bet.
