Title: I need a companion....for my Celestion Post by: cat on May 26, 2008, 12:23:19 PM Hey guys,
I'm going to build a vertical 2 x 12" cab to go with my OTS with a Celestion G12-65 15ohm speaker in it. I need to find a companion speaker for it. The Celestion has really nice lows and strong mids but the highs are a little too rolled off. I'm hoping to find a speaker that will compliment the Celestion and provide the high frequency "sparkle" that the G12-65 lacks. Any suggestions you could provide would be much appreciated. Thanks guys, Cat Title: Re: I need a companion....for my Celestion Post by: Steven_nl on May 26, 2008, 02:25:06 PM I have 2 celestion G12-65's so I'm interested in the anser as well. I read on The Gear Page forum that you need to use these speakers for a while to get their full potential.
Title: Re: I need a companion....for my Celestion Post by: fullerplast on May 26, 2008, 03:13:09 PM Having tried both fully broken in, I find the EVM-12L to be a far better match for the Overtone than the G12-65. Don't know how one of each would sound, but having at least one EV would probably be better than a pair of G12-65's, although the EV may be the dominant sounding speaker......

Title: Re: I need a companion....for my Celestion Post by: herby660 on June 05, 2008, 01:59:19 PM I like the alnico mix..Blue and G12H30 etc. A greenback is basically a G12H30 that breaks up sooner, so try an alnico.
For wattage reasons a Red Fang at 30W would give you some sparkle that's for sure...Smooth breakup up too. Or an Alnico Gold Celestion. I can get a Gold for the same price of an eminence in the UK . Some guys have used these Golds already with the Overtone in a pairing. They could be easily sold on after if you dont like 'em. Title: Re: I need a companion....for my Celestion Post by: hywelg on June 05, 2008, 03:15:24 PM I wonder if you could point me at a source for a Gold cheap, in the UK. Thanks
Title: Re: I need a companion....for my Celestion Post by: cat on June 06, 2008, 07:02:30 AM Ended up with a Weber Silver Bell guys.

Thanks Try Appian Acoustics (www.loudspeaker.co.uk) Tele 0141 6363700 speak to Frank. He will do one delivered to mainland UK for £135 all in. Title: Re: I need a companion....for my Celestion Post by: hywelg on June 06, 2008, 05:36:32 PM So the prices (£155) shown are list I guess. I'll give him a ring, thinking of a Blue for my 5watt SE which needs to go into a combo. Did you get the EVM-12L from him aswell? (see my question in another thread)
How do you rate the gold alongside th EVM-12l Title: Re: I need a companion....for my Celestion Post by: marinblues on June 06, 2008, 07:08:29 PM I find that the G12-65 has really sweet highs. Here's a sample:

I would mix the 65 with either a heritage green back G12H 30 or a scumback of the equivalent.... or a pre rola greenback 20,25,or 30. cheers Title: Re: I need a companion....for my Celestion Post by: yagoo nana on June 12, 2008, 12:12:02 PM My experience of the G12-65 is that it is a lovely unit, but it's too soft & smooth. I reckon a V30 or G12H would be a good match.
The V30 & G12H are both a lot louder than the 65 so you may want to try mismatched resistance drivers to try and even the levels out. e.g. a 16 ohm G12H with an 8 ohm 65. I need to try this myself, and have the drivers here I just need to get a little motivation :D Title: Re: I need a companion....for my Celestion Post by: fred on June 22, 2008, 08:43:22 PM I find that the G12-65 has really sweet highs. Im recording a few sanatana songs at the moment so would love to know how you got that sound. I also have a custom built combo amp with (2) Rola Celestion G12-65s in it. I have A/B'd these two sets of speakers using the OTS. The V30 / G12H combo is far more articulate than the G12-65's. More solid lows and a crisper top-end. I had the amp with G12-65's for about three years and I thought those G12-65's sounded great. Until....I compared them to the V30/G12H combo. When I play with all 4 speakers the G12-65's disappear in the mix. Maybe the 25W Greenback would be the best bet. Title: Re: I need a companion....for my Celestion Post by: poticasoti on July 14, 2008, 07:14:59 AM I am using an Achillies custom built 2x12 box with my Overtone and it is loaded with a Greenback and Vintage 30. I was pleasantly suprised how good they sound with clean and overdriven tones. I use a strat and a Belman Hornet so I find that I need to dial in a bit more treble with the Belman which has Suhr humbuckers in it! I did my first gig with it last weekend and there were quite a few muso's there. I got a lot of comments on how well the amp cut through the mix without being too toppy! :D

Thanks guys, Cat Here the schematics I get for a 2x12 Two Rock Signature like. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BHR54P8F (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BHR54P8F) You should use multi-ply birch. You need to center the oval open back and to not make the handle's holes. They are both 8 ohm speakers wired for 4 ohms and there is no absence of volume.... I have tried the OTS through an EVM and liked the tone but theres something about the Celestions that really makes this amp shine IMHO. |
