1  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Can I get decent tones at bedroom level? on: January 26, 2010, 05:15:48 PM
I've never heard a really respectable lead tone from an OTS with a strat at bedroom volume.  I havehoweverwith a dumblelator in the loop with a humbucking geetar.

The real magic with the OTS is at stage volume I'm afraid.

Nik sent me my kit with 6v6s.  The newer 6v6s can handle the voltage.   I was reading this thread since half power was something I considered at first but decided to try it this way to start.

Is your amp built?  If so, how do you like it with 6V6's?  I've never heard a real good implementaion of the Pentode / Triod 1/2 power switch.  I've given up on that deal.

you can build alot of amps!

6V6s where mentioned several times!

Nik has mentioned in a recent post (that I'm too lazy to find and quote) that all one has to do is slap some JJ6V6's in and rebias.  Evidentally the JJs are robust enough to take the plate voltages.

For everyone else out there, good ole Mr. Dumble himself has even built a couple of ODS's around the 6V6 tube.  Not many, but he has done it.

Yes, I do have 6v6's. I had read that the JJ 6v6's could take the higher plate voltages so I ran ran it by Nik and he gave me the go ahead.

I didn't know you could do a direct swap like that to be honest.  That's an interesting development because you are putting out less watts overall.  I know my 44 watt OTS is still LOUD!

Thx,
Jim

I tubed it with ei ax7's and JJ 6v6's.

You sure you got 6V6's in there?

Moving away from parts to kits and completed amps only is the way to go.  This basically means you're busy!  No one should expect you to hold hands with every customer with rediculous parts questions.

Don't sweat the anti-malaysian sentiment on some forums.  Their running and hiding.  Don't let up now.

what kinda of guitar are you using?  Wish he would have played a chord or even some diads to really suss out how clean that really was.

10  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: HRM, very bright amp ? on: March 27, 2009, 04:10:24 PM
give it a burn in of at least 24 hours continuous running (leave it on with normal settings) and then come back to it.

You should put a signal thru the amp if you do this according to my amp guy or all your doing is wasting electricity.  But, yes I subscribe to the burn in theory.

11  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Mod Overtone Special to S&M specs? on: February 27, 2009, 05:06:01 PM
Cleans are the same.  S&M is gainer, some think it might be too much.

Tongue in cheek response follows: You could just buy the HRM model and then you would never have to worry about your decision as what to buy.

12  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Overtone Special vs Overtone Special S&M on: February 26, 2009, 05:53:25 PM
Well technically speaking S&M has a bright cap on the master vol,OTS does not and S&M has 2.2uF V1b bypass cap and OTS has 5uF. Both things do affect the clean side.
Like I said OTS should be a bit warmer.

OTS cleans are just a smidgen warmer, but this is easy correctable by turning down the treble on the S&M.  They are effectively the same.

The cleans are all but identical between the S&M and later version OTS models.

We did a shoot out and they sounded identical using both strats and 335s.  Pics eventually of this scientific testing that was undertaken last weekend.

My amp sounds different (sometimes, a lot different) in every different venue I play in.

I agree, not only do you have to deal with room acoustics, but you might also be a victim of poor AC voltage and or dirty power.

Nothing wrong Nik's trannies IMO.  Gig and live with the amp as is for a year so you can hear what it's about.  These amps are guitar and speaker cabinet dependent to a large degree as well.

There are tubes to swap (power and preamp), PI trimmer to adjust, OD trimmer to adjust, possible tone stack adjustments, and the use of a dumblelator in the loop.

So to  address your question, I don't believe it is a good idea to swap OT's at so early in the game.

Good luck in your tone pursuits,
Jim
