46  Ceriatone / Overtone / FX loop wierdness on: August 17, 2008, 02:37:19 AM
Ok using a Chandler Echo in the Fx loop, I'm getting a volume drop and the master volume is ineffective above 3.
IS it Klein/Dumblator time?

Tap your power tubes. They sometimes can rattle giving you a ghost note. Or plug straight  into the power amp  of the FX loop if you are still getting it there, power amp problem, if not pre-amp.

maybe have to ask again?
have a look at this site. http://www.two-rock-jp.com/sdcab/
the vertical 2X12 is the same width and depth as the head.
I don't think the size of the box is too important. The oval port is the same size as the area of the speakers.

50  Ceriatone / Overtone / corner protectors on: August 04, 2008, 01:22:50 AM
Hi
Got some corner protectors for my ots head. The tolex corners will not last long without them.
They are the fender style ones with the 2 counter sunk screw holes.

Any tips on putting these on, when they are placed on they don't sit flush. Do I need to rebate the cab to fit them through the tolex?... or can I just make a indent into the cab with around ended punch?
51  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: TR CRS vs OTS on: August 02, 2008, 08:29:51 AM
Do you think this is a small component change caps, resistors, tubes or larger design based issue like the output transformer?
52  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Questionable, but i might be going for the Overtone on: August 01, 2008, 06:14:53 AM
One thing about the overtone is that it is point to point. I don't care about the sound debate of this. But after touring for near 15 years with different amps,. the point to point amps are always far more reliable.  This would be the only disadvantage with the new reissues,as in general they sound ok. With a few mods they can sound pretty good.
Some of them sound better than the silver face equivalent specifically the Twin.

in the ceriatone pictures?
the wiper on the switch moves in  parallel to the knob.
both point up. The picture you posted the wiper is to the left. If you look at the back panel of the amp the knob will be to the right toward 16ohm.

I was not sure how to check with the multimeter.
I've just built mine but can't remember what diagram I used to wire it. But I get 0.9 1.0 1.2 ohms on the ot on 4 8 16 settings. This sound right?

But I think the pic is right. It shows the orange wire of the ot (16 ohm tap ) engaged. the other orange wire is the common to the speaker jack.
The switch would be turned to the right (facing the back of the amp) to 16ohm ...toward the foot switch jack.
I had more problems with the foot switch and defeat switch wiring....

Any way of checking with a multimeter?
56  Ceriatone / Overtone / bias issues on: July 26, 2008, 02:02:58 PM
Hi
I can't get my bias below 35ma (old Svetlana 6l6), I know this is not a problem but it would be nice to have the pot bias sit in the middle of it's range.
Which resistor should i change. The 15k on the pot or the1.2k on the board?
Also what sort of voltages do you guys see on the bias?

One more question has Nik set up these amps to run EL34s?
My power valves have the 1k/5w  resistors.  If so anyone had luck with these?

thanks nick

A Super reverb sounds nothing like a Twin reverb and of these which models Huh?? a red knob twin vs a tan super..........With or without a tube screamer.
May as well suggest a ots with a ts-808.
With an open back cab mounted with 2x12jbls  or 4X10 jensens. The difference in the amps would be canceled out by the speakers.

These styles of amps are designed to sound good in a live/gig situations. Hearing them in context of a midi/backing track is meaningless. Unless you want to use your amp for that.

There are many times a one amp that you did not like, will sound better in certain situations. Believe me I have done enough gigs and recording to know this.

The OTS is a versatile amp. Be prepared for it to show all the glitches nuance in your playing in a similar way to an AC-30. If you want the amp to to help you through go down the mesa road.

58  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: My ODSish rant! on: July 24, 2008, 12:13:00 PM
Come on
This is why the man(Howard D) was employed at a high cost to build your amp. His experience and ears. Good engineers can interpret what you tell them and help achieve the sound you are chasing.
Howard D was great at this, just as Robben Ford Larry, Carlton, Lowell George, David Lindley, SRV, Ry Cooder and many others are at playing. They employed him to create the sound they wanted, you can't do it all. To just tune it your self is like asking a beginner guitar player to tune a guitar. It takes time guidance and experience.
If you go down this path you'll spend more time messing with your amp than playing.

If people ask a general question then it maybe just to get into the ball park. I'm not going to use a ES175 through a JC120 to get Steve Vai's sound?

I'm sorted
I found the info I needed for the front port cab.
Drop me a mail if you are interested.

60  Ceriatone / Overtone / fx loop resistor/cap on: July 19, 2008, 05:09:46 AM
I notice on the old ceriatone diagram there was the 220k resistor and cap on the fx loop. Now this deleted.
To me it looks as if the #124 schematic is different to the ceriatone diagram.
what is/was the purpose of these bits.
