More dependent on the tube design. The 6L6s have a certain heat that they can tolerate and beyond that they can fail or have a shortened lifespan. There are volumes written on biasing. The 'D' amp that the Overtone is based on had an output section like a 100W Fender twin (which Mr D copied) . So you can research 'biasing fender twin' on the net as I suspect the bias settings should not be different weather you have a 100w or 50w version.
Again, you can read pages and pages on biasing but it does come down to adjusting the trimmer pot to where it sounds best and measuring cathode current to make shure you are not pushing the tubes too hard.
The advantage of having a number to go by lets you set the amp to a reasonable bias setting (that has worked for you for other similar amps) while on the bench, without having to hook up a guitar and speaker.
[/i] Hi ic-racer Another thing is to ask your tube supplier for the optimum bias for a particular tube, and within the range for that tube you can be subjective based on how it sounds to you biased either hot or cold or somewhere in between. If I understand it right you can also change a resister value to come into the the correct bias range of a type of tube, but you need to know the correct plate voltage to have a starting point-am I correct..my knowledge is limited so I will gladly stand corrected if wrong. ic-racer do you know the plate voltage of the Overtone, Nik told me 440 to 450 volts and I want to know definitively what it is |

Hey All Overtone users, this is just a thought, and I have not received my Overtone yet but it would be cool if we put our heads together and made our own manual. It could include the basics of operation, various favorite settings, and maybe, for those who have the expertise, some of the mods and various tweaks that you all have done. I am not a tech so I will have to do mods supplied by you guys and saying that, won't necessarily know at first the what or why of what I am doing but it is a way to learn that. Don't know what you will think of this but thought it would be a good idea...any thoughts, I really would like to hear some ideas.  |

I'm not an expert but as far as I know 5881 tubes are rated for plate voltage up to 400V and Overtones plate voltage is 450-470V. That's to much for these tubes.  Nik told me the plate voltage was 440 to 450, not disputing you, I just want to know what it really is, should I ask Nik again? The reason for me is I am going to try something I won't mention until I do it, because all of you will think I am crazy, but if it works..Oh Boy. So I need a definitive answer to that. I wish you would quit posting these clips, it is making the wait for my amp excruciating : I listened to your strat clips some more and am really happy with how they sound. I am getting some Pete Biltoft pups to replace my kinmans and cannot wait to get them in and get the amp. Can I request a song, I would love to hear how Riviera Paradise sounds. You have given me great relief I was worried about the single coil sound which I tend to lean towards as opposed to humbuckers, but you have made them sing, thanks. |

No, I haven't tried them in this amp. But, I did go back and forth between the original 6V6's and 6L6's in my Brownnote D'Lite. In that case, I was going from a 6V6 optomized circuit to 6L6.
Just a heads-up (for everyone thinking of trying this) about swapping. I haven't taken a close look at Nik's OT for the Overtone but I'm guessing it doesn't have dual Primaries....I'll check when I get home. The pair of 6L6's want to see a primary impedance of around 5K and conversely a pair of 6V6's...8K. Therefore, it isn't a simple case of re-bias and play. You have an impedance mismatch BUT because there are 4,8, and 16 ohm secondary taps there is leeway to better approximate the correct primary impedance.
On the D'lite you have an 8K Pri OT (6V6) that you want to "knock down" to 4 or 5K for 6L6's. To do so just re-label the secondaries as 2, 4 and 8 ohms instead of 4,8, and 16. I'm certainly no EE so correct me if my logic is wrong but 6L6 to 6V6 should be the opposite....8, 16, and 32 ohm instead of 4, 8, and 16. All this being said, a 100% impedance mis-match can sound great and the OT should be able to handle it.

Chris I hijacked this from the 6V6 thread in the Overtone forum, Have you or anyone thought more about this. I am going to try it if it is possible. JJ 6v6's ccan handle plate voltages of 450 volts I am told, but I don't know squat about the rest of what you are talking about have you sussed any of this out.

But I am sure which higher end tones are you trying to get...? Your tone is pretty smooth on this clips, almost "G12-65-ish".  I'll have some more ethos clips up in a few days recorded with the same setup but with the G1265 speakers. You'll hear that they don't have as much "Rip" to them. thats a REAL Dumble.  Thats a great LP and Larry is at his best. Actually, the Overtone does come closer to the Larry tone than it does to the Robben tone. M. Marin, Your such a fine player , I thought you would appreciate that, and I also wanted to ask what tubes you are using, I am thinking of some EL34's, and what are you using for preamp tubes, v1, v2, v3, am I saying that right? JeffreyB-how is it going with your tone thing  Hey, what I am wondering is: why do you want to go for EL34s? The amp is pretty brown sounding for an 6L6, especially with the stock Tungsol tubes. M. I know a guy who bought a glaswerks with EL34s. It's INCREDIBLY loud. Too loud for most clubs or studios IMO. If anything, I'd like a version with 6V6 tubes or lower powered mains to bring it down to 30 watts like fuchs does with the SLX 30 I just want the option to try them. I love both EL34 and 6l6's, would even like to try KT66 tubes, but nothing is written in stone and you are right it sounds good with the 6l6's. I am not even close to the player you are but nonetheless tone is what I want and that is why I want to try this amp, you sure sound great and I am excited about getting mine whenever that day arrives. Marin play some more clean with your strat or tele, preferably the strat. What pick ups do you have? |

... but I don't know where the pre od resister is. The resistor is North of OD 100K trimmer. If you take a look at the OD tube V2 (layout) and go from pin 2 (grid), first you will find a 68K resistor, than 100K trimmer and than 150K ("pre OD resistor"). All those resistors/trimmer are known as a pre OD netwoork and Chris is talking about that 150K resistor. Does that help? Yes sir, thank you. When I get my amp I will want to know how to do some of this stuff, I am not a complete bozo, I just don't know what will do what and will need some input but until then I will be interested greatly in what you all do, many thanks mcinku |

By the way, folks keep asking these questions about will it do this or will it do that.
All dumble amps are different but the difference between one guy's amp and another guy's amp is usually a matter of $10 in component tweaks. When folks buy high dollar d-clones, they often have to have some tweaks made based on speaker cabs, playing styles, etc.
So, just cuz you hear Marin's amp doing or not doing something doesn't mean too much. Almost any of the d tones based on the ODS amps are possible with a tweak or two...Or maybe it's perfect right out of the box. There's no voodoo here.

This is really going to show how little I know. I want to do some of the mods you are talking about but don't know where they all are. I figured out the bright cap and I think I understand where v2 a and b are but I don't know where the pre od resister is. How do I learn this stuff, I am already trying to learn so much now, my old man brain is on overload lol. I haven't got my amp yet, but I want smooth, no fizz dumble like tone and will do what ever it takes beside buying one unless I win the lottery then I will buy all of us one.
Why can't you build another tone stack?..dumb question?
By the way thanks for answering the questions I have already asked, I was home with a cold today and had way too much time on my hands.
