I just watched a power tube die right before my eyes, something is amiss the noise level is way beyond what it should be and I am giving up. This baby needs a doctor.  Cry

This is still one cool amp, and this problem will be cured, just frustrated

Doctor!!!

Hey All,
My amp seems really loud, When I got it it sounded wonderful but something is wrong now I think. I am not a tech but if I turn the amp up to say 6 on volume and 6 on master it is way too loud, I am talking about hum, it wasnt'nt there when I got it. The mid adjust doesn't seem to be ineffective and sound is buzzy when I overdrive it. I have 6l6's in biased to 38 mv.  I haven't done any mods it is stock and I am freaked out. Any thoughts. This is with all my guitars straight in no pedals. Help!!

Me too,
This is very sweet. A buddy of mine came over who is familiar with these amps and gave me an eq lesson. Right now I have no od on and the jazz on, I think bright and deep are off, I get mixed up because I am going to make a cab and right now it sits upside down. Unlike you guys I am running GT el34ls's that I cannot get close to even bias and it still sounds good, I know I just got it but I have never had an amp like this and it is so inspiring. I am not yet a proficient guitar player and but this amp makes me play better, or my bad playing sounds better. Cool :Smiley

I wanted to add that I am using a Lansing Altec 417 8c speaker in a generic open back (wide open) cab and it is the perfect match-wow!

Hope you are having as much fun way out there to the west of me poipounder.

I am not going to do anything yet. Do you mean the bias resistor because that is what I might have to change to get the range for the 6v6. I don't know a lot so this isn't something I will do right away but I will try it. Right now I am running GT el34ls's and I don't have a patch cable in the effects loop. My tubes are not a perfect match but I have to say this is one nice amp, I have never had anything like this before. My personal opinion, at least for now, I just got the amp so things will change, is that the el34ls's sound better to my ear than the JJ 6l6gc's. Oh and I am sorry I missed your reply, I didn't see it until now.

I have my OT Grin...and it sounds killer!!!  Yup...I'm one lucky bastard Grin  It's going to be a long honeymoon!!!
The only bummer part...was the match set of NOS GE 6L6's weren't matched.  I picked up a matched set of Groove Tubes GT6L6B from the local guitar shop.  They do sound pretty good!!!  I also ended up using a set of Amperex 12ax7's...sounded a lil sweeter Grin
Anyways...I gotta run.  I have a Overtone waiting to be played with Chair Dance

Thanks for the replies. I haven't had a chance to really play it, other than to know this amp is going to take me awhile to dial in. I like it but don't want to gush until I have actually got the sound I want to hear, but that is for another category. I biased it hot last night. Interesting, the pot to adjust has no slot for a screwdriver so I had to use needle nose pliers..is there a tool I don't know about. Tonight I am going to put some EL34's in it..can't help it I am a tweaker. Mcinku where do you have your OD pot adjusted to, and which side do you read it from to know where say 10:00 is, this may seem like a stupid question but I have to ask. I am pretty sure I got it right just checking. I did not get the gain I wanted, but like I said I did not have a lot of time to play with.
Also have you change that resistor by the trimmer, just trying to get a feel for what makes it be all it can be.
It is definitely a good amp.
53  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Overtone biasing on: March 21, 2008, 06:29:42 AM
Okay guys, I got it, it's sitting warming up. The amp I had that I could bias had two test points for each tube and a separate pot for each. This has only three, one ground two hot, and one pot. So I assume I adjust each one, I am just a little in the dark. I also am assuming 450 plate volts for now, because I don't fell comfortable measuring that yet. I will take it to my buddies house on Saturday and get him to show me the safe way. For now I just want to hear it Grin I won't run it too hot, my ear is still good even if I am old Shocked
Hope someone is up still, would be nice to have this info, what a noobz with teh toobz eh?

Thanks mcinku, I didn't know about that site having that info-big help.
59  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Manual on: March 15, 2008, 07:54:13 PM
That's not a bad idea I guess.

...there is a lot information on this forum already but to put it all together with the right structure... Not an easy task.
Are you willing to do that?

If you would start and make a draft of some kind, I can lay a hand.

 Wink

You are right- A lot of work, my thought would be, I would give it a go, grab all I could find put it in one spot in a general way in categories of some sort, and then you(we) could edit it like wickipedia until we get it right(correct). I am not a tech so I would be unqualified to address that but could put all that has been written in one spot and then we do what I suggested above. I don't have my amp yet and when I get it it will take me some time to figure out controls but this could be a fun project to try and collaborate on with everbody.

I measured mine and I have 450V.

By using the bias measure points I biased my amp to 42mV.

 Wink

mcinku, what tubes are you using, if 6l6, that is a warm bias(hot?) just curious, still learning, how does it sound. I have some JJ 6l6 gc's and a set of el34(groove tube el34s) that I like. I will try the 6l6's first.
