The overdriven tones in the overtone seem a tiny bit harsh for my tastes...I'm playing through V30s...so, maybe the G12-65 would smooth it out perfectly...any thoughts on that?
V30s are a very harsh speaker unless heavily doped ala matchless. G1265 would smooth it out quite a bit. Emi RW&B would give you somewhat of a fender vibe combined with a celestion which is a good choice in a dumble type of amp. The 1265 will attenuate the highs a bit and depending on what type of tone you're looking for will sound much better than a V30.
But I am sure which higher end tones are you trying to get...?

I'll have some more ethos clips up in a few days recorded with the same setup but with the G1265 speakers. You'll hear that they don't have as much "Rip" to them.
Jack Have you ever tried a Lansing Altec 417 8c. Also I have a g1265 I don't particularly take a shine to, question, what do you mean by rip
I have tried several Altecs...Not sure which models. They were all fantastic.
By the way, here's another clip of the RW&B speaker mic'd with an SM57 and driven by an ethos pedal. The RW&B just has a ripping high end that the 1265 is missing IMO.
But I am sure which higher end tones are you trying to get...?

Actually, the Overtone does come closer to the Larry tone than it does to the Robben tone.

Marin, Your such a fine player , I thought you would appreciate that, and I also wanted to ask what tubes you are using, I am thinking of some EL34's, and what are you using for preamp tubes, v1, v2, v3, am I saying that right? JeffreyB-how is it going with your tone thing
Hey, what I am wondering is: why do you want to go for EL34s?
The amp is pretty brown sounding for an 6L6, especially with the stock Tungsol tubes.

I know a guy who bought a glaswerks with EL34s. It's INCREDIBLY loud. Too loud for most clubs or studios IMO. If anything, I'd like a version with 6V6 tubes or lower powered mains to bring it down to 30 watts like fuchs does with the SLX 30
By the way, folks keep asking these questions about will it do this or will it do that.
All dumble amps are different but the difference between one guy's amp and another guy's amp is usually a matter of $10 in component tweaks. When folks buy high dollar d-clones, they often have to have some tweaks made based on speaker cabs, playing styles, etc.
So, just cuz you hear Marin's amp doing or not doing something doesn't mean too much. Almost any of the d tones based on the ODS amps are possible with a tweak or two...Or maybe it's perfect right out of the box. There's no voodoo here.
I agree that they can be too smooth. However, they do work well with the "bright" switch on the Overtone, which people tend not to use with normal speakers.
It brings back that single coils upper end.

Unfortunately, those speakers can't reproduce the high freq so no matter how much brightness the amp is putting out, they will never have the twangyness to get a really great clean tone. As I said, it's a compromise because they do sound great when heavily distorted. They are also about 1/2 the efficiency of the RW&B speakers. A good compromise might be a RW&B along with a 1265 but the 1265 woudl get buried in the mix.

Can't get to youtube from work but I'll give it a listen tonight. Usually, when folks talk about bright with the Heritage G1265 speakers they're really talking about upper mids since the g1265 can't reproduce much high freq.
I have a spare Ironsounds buffered loop board set here I've been thinking of trying to impliment into the Overtone. I have one in my D'lite and it works very well. The Overtone is pretty low on real estate so I may have to experiment with an external mount.
However, the stock loop seems to be fine with the effects I'm using in the loop using as short as possible patch cables.
I imagine that would change if you cranked the preamp up a bit.
Do you know which Celestion can compare to the RWB?
Unfortunately not but I believe the emi governer uses the same voice coil and magnet but with a british cone. I was thinking of trying one of those out.
i assume by high gain you are talking about AC/DC stuff? Master Volume jcm800 hot-rodded? I don't think the dumble design will give you that but you could put a plexi OT in it and run it with EL34s and it would be closer.
