16  British Style / JTM 45, 50 / Re: Using a JTM45 at low/high volume on: March 29, 2012, 07:48:38 PM
I thought ACDC used mainly JMP 2203's and 2204's for the most part - both master and non-master volume models. Like the JTM these amps are SERIOUSLY loud when used for ACDC tones. That's where they got their tone - hard to believe but their amps were set a lot cleaner than you'd think only breaking into power tube overdrive when they hit their guitars really hard, which thankfully they did a lot Wink The power came from the sheer volume, not gain.

I'd recommend Nik's 18 watter (or if you're gigging maybe a 36 watter with 1/2 power switch) so that you can get those power valves pushing into nice harmonic overdrive at more sensible volumes.

You'll still need an overdrive pedal for home use though as 18 watts is still LOUD.

Happy St Patricks day to all Wink

Read the tips on 'burning in' your amp with an mp3 player or similar - your amp will sound better after 20/30 hours playing time...play that mother!

No sweat man! -I got my replacement lamp ages ago off Nik and I still haven't got around to putting it in yet Wink - thinking of trying Gregg's HRM bypass mod while I have the chassis out - just haven't had time with family stuff, work and (thankfully) gigs..

Sweet! Lovely sounds

Sometimes I like the bright switch on with the Strat - depends on the room and how loud I'm 'allowed' to go on the amp..amp doesn't need it on when it's cooking.

Yeah the rack delay will probably be ok in the loop because I guess you can set in & out levels on it (or maybe because it runs at line level) - you'll need a Klein or C-Later (better) if you want to run any pedals in there. I tried a pedal delay in loop when I first got the amp and didn't have a buffer - sounded ok at bedroom levels but when I tried at gig volume it just wasn't happening.

Keep those vids coming - I must get someone to do one for our band Smiley

Rock on!

My amp is a HRM Bluesmaster 100 running into a Zilla 1x12 semi open back cab with EVM12L and Tayden diffuser.

Guitar > 80's Jen Crybaby > Pitchblack tuner > Rangemaster clone > Zendrive > Modded Dano Chicken Salad (for vibe/phase) > amp

In the loop I have a Klein with a Boss CE2 chorus, an Akai E2 looper/delay & a Tech21 BoostRVB verb.

We play classic rock - Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, AC/DC, Stones, Police, Quo, ZZ, Doors, VH, Skynyrd, Floyd, Tom Petty, Gary Moore, and some 'newer' stuff like Kravitz, Killers, Cult & U2.

Amp does it all with ease :/

These are defo not just jazz blues amps!

EDIT

Welcome to the forum Nik :/

Cheers

Kieran

I didn't want to take a chance so just ordered a replacement from Nik..
24  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: OT Free Matt Schofield webcast gigs on: January 19, 2012, 06:46:54 PM
Bridge pickup on a strat was never a favourite of mine either - i often wonder how Eric Johnson gets that lovely violin tone on his bridge pickup with a fuzz pedal  Huh? Any I've tried never sound like that!

I have a Bluesmaster 100 so the clean channel is voiced slightly different. With the strat I like to crank the clean channel volume to 7 or 8 - to fatten it up a bit I use a Zen drive with the 'voice' control set to thicken the mids..I'd imagine a tubescreamer type pedal would do a similar job.

These amps are much easier to get a smile when playing humbuckers..imho of course  Cheesy

Sorry should have said I'm using a Klein in the loop and a slightly oversized semi-open back 1x12 cab with an older EVM12L - I've had the amp for over two years so it should be well broken in by now. Everything on the amp is stock apart from the preamp tubes which I changed for nos Brimar, Tungsol and Sovtek LPS in V1,2 & 3 respectively - just finding it hard to get the OD side louder or punchier than the clean side at gig volume. Think I'll back off on the gain for next gig and see how it does...

Thanks for the tips so far  Smiley

Thanks for the info on the HRM trimmers - had my amp at a mate's rehearsal room last night and still finding it difficult to get the drive side to cut through as well as the clean side - maybe I'm using too much gain? - I have the OD rear trimmer set at 10 o'clock and had the first volume on 6 (on the dial) and front drive between 4 and 6 playing the Strat...still liking the clean channel with the first volume control cranked up to 7 or 8 - I'll keep working at it Smiley

I have Fralin Vintage Hots in my Strat, which Matt previously used before he went to the Amalfitano's. I can get a nice tone on the bridge pickup (which has a metal baseplate) by doing what you were ie. rolling the tone off a little and maybe reducing the volume slightly too...I found the tone on all 3 pickups to be much better by having them set relatively low - bass side barely protruding from scratch plate on neck and middle with a slight slant upwards to treble side. I have bridge pickup set even on bass & treble just slightly higher than the other two.

Don't get me wrong - doesn't sound as fat as Matt's bridge but getting there..try lowering your pups & let the amp work a bit harder - worked for me Wink

I had to go out last night so missed the webcast - if anyone knows where I could get a look at it (or even a few clips) I'd be much obliged - a friend has told me that it was fantastic..

Gregg

Any idea what Nik sets the HRM trimmers when he sends them out - I'm wondering if the mids on my Bluesmaster OD could be increased..I'll search the forum for this too...

Edit - yeah the search has given me plenty to ponder - I don't want to change any components but I might try increasing the mid HRM trimmer just a hair to see if that helps...
29  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: NEW OTS and CAB day soon.... need a lot of help!!! on: January 17, 2012, 09:21:09 AM
Cheers for that Gregg - I have a 100 watter so I'll need to see if I can squeeze a toggle switch in somewhere else. I have to replace the pilot light on mine so I'll maybe give it a go while I'm doing that...

I bypassed the HRM on my Bluesmaster a while back Wink

Yeah I remember checking out your diagram for that mod - where did you put the switch Greg?

Cheers
