British Style / 18 Watt / 36W Chassis Size?
|
on: December 24, 2007, 01:58:40 PM

Does anyone know if the 36W chassis is the same size as the 18W chassis from Ceriatone? I've got a new project ( ) that I'm going to undertake and it's going to involve a 36W chassis.

British Style / 18 Watt / Re: Too Much gain from 18w EF86 TMB - Advice

If you don't want to be doing surgery on your amp, swapping V3 to a 12AT7 might help reduce the gain on the TMB channel. This would be the preamp spot closest to the power tubes.
If you want to reduce the gain and are OK with doing a few mods, you can start changing cathode resistor values on the TMB channel. The higher the resistor, the lower the gain. You could try a 1K or a 1K5 as a cathode resistor, which would help to lower the gain.

Actually, they both share the same preamp structure. The only difference is in the power section. It comes down to whether you want the EL84 grind or the 6V6/EL34 thump. The Liverpool is cathode biased, which will make it seem to compress a little bit more (in my experience), and the Express is fixed bias, giving it a seemingly tighter low end.

If I end up doing this, I'll drag it along to the next MN builders get together and blow everyone's ears out. Where in MN are you from? I'm toying with the idea of setting up a homebrewers get-together, but it's tough to find a good venue for it. Plus it'll have to wait until I get my Weber Java kit up and running (I've got Mojo and TAD caps going in - it's pretty much just a Weber chassis and trannies.) I'm in the Twin Cities. If you're the same Weathered as over on Harmony-Central, than we've met at John's house last Spring/Summer. That's me. Don't you have a SLO and a your P1ex? Do you know when John is going to have another get together? I've got another amp on the bench that I want to show off when it's done.

Custom amp building, Prototypes and other amps / Discussion / Re: Where to start.....

thanks for the replies... I guess I'll play with a small amp first... I just have little use for a sub 50 watt head with Bass. I guess a 1x12" combo for guitarist to use at living room jam / writing sessions wouldn't hurt Well, if nothing else, you can sell your build for cost or a small loss (it's hard to make money on your first few builds), and fund the next amp with it. Nothing wrong with having a great guitar amp for your buddies to use.

Is there a reason that you're going to source other parts elsewhere? If you're not used to sourcing parts, you'll inevitably forget something and have to place multiple orders, and it'll cost you more than getting a complete kit from Nik. I think that you can buy a kit without trannies, and that'll include all of the rest of the parts.
As far as upgrades go, you could order Sozo or Mojo Dijon coupling caps (the Sozos can be had from Metro Amps, Turretboards.com; the Mojos are sold my Mojo Musical Supply), TAD or Sprague Electro caps (TAD can be had from Mojo, Sprague from a lot of places), F&T or JJ can caps, 1 watt carbon film resistors (available most places, it'll keep your noise floor lower than carbon comps), mil-spec pots (RV4 or Clarostat). As far as transformers, I've been impressed with the Heyboer iron that I've worked with, and they can be had from multiple sources (Mojo sells a good set, Marstran have a good reputation, Metro). Mercury has a good following, but will cost more than Heyboer for most types of iron.

You'll definitely want to start small and work your way up. Even a 50 or 100 watt Plexi is going to be a diffuicult first build. If you take your time and are extremely diligent, it isn't impossible to build one as your first build, but it is much easier to start with a small Fender (Champ, Princeton, 5E3) or something like an 18 watt Marshall.

I'll third that. Bickering amongst ourselves distracts us from the true point - we all want great guitar tone, and if building or buying a D-clone is the way to that tone, then we should embrace all options.

I do think that the worse was at TheGearPAge.
Anyway.. let´s not forget that the person who posted all the pics and info about Dumble #124 did say: "The hand-drawn diagrams and the opportunity for me to take these pictures are courtesy of my good friend Billy, who insisted that this information be shared with all amp enthusiasts without restrictions." (this is a quote from himself).
And Nik´s Dumble version was not even an exact clone of that amp...
I do understand what you´re saying about a grey area.. but.. all the amp business is "gray" and everybody just copies and clones each other.. and there are many cloners out there that only get praise for their work (which is, also, being sold.. most of the times at insane prices).
It´s interesting to see Ceriatone stirring so much feellings out there.. I have my own opinion about all this Ceriatone hate (and I´m not a Ceriatone fanboy at all).. but I would rather not share it here. We never know.... anybody can register here.. even those.. and I wish this forum to be kept free from much of the nonsense I´ve been reading on a lot of Internet forums..
That's very true about cloners. Hell, a lot of great amp companies started out as a clone company, or are still cloning amps and selling them for big cash. I think that Nik provides a service for people who cannot afford the real thing, and I think that they're 90% of the real amp. Is that last 10% what makes a Matchless Lightning worth what it is worth? To me, yes. The same situation with a MIM Strat vs. a Suhr/G&L/Fender CS. That last 5 or 10% is where the money comes in.

Damn those snobs. I don't know what those guys at AmpGarage are saying but I can imagine. The same shit was happening with TW clones. For crying out loud, he is not selling a Dumble... it's a clone, not even the exact one!!!! everybody everywhere is doing it... and I'm not talking only amps here... I say Fu**k them all and bring back the amp, the market will decide if this is a good idea or not. Those guys can cry as much as they want. BRING IT BACK, BRING IT BACK !!!!!! I can kind of see what the Amp Garage crew are saying, because he took info that someone worked hard to acquire and is using it to make a living. I don't have any qualms with that (nor do I have any qualms with the T-wreck stuff), but not giving the people who did a portion of the leg work credit is a bit "grey" to me. To be honest, I think that part of the reason that Amp Garage is poo-pooing Ceriatone stuff is because you no longer have to build your own 'wreck clone, and amp builders can be a vain community.

Tw Clones / Expression / Re: Expression Layout
|
on: November 02, 2007, 01:14:06 PM
|
I have not built an amp before, but this layout looks very straight forward. Now bear in mind that I have not built an amp, so this may not really be the case. But, one question for those in the know? I understand that the lead dress is EXTREMELY crucial in these amps working right or having some real noise issues, can you tell by this layout?, if the way the wiring is routed is somewhere in the vicinity of where it should probably be when complete and correct??? and if not, where do you think you'd have issues on this layout?? Or is this a question that cannot really be answered with any real accuracy?
This definitely is not a simple first build - it is possible to build one as your first attempt, but you may have trouble with the typical noise issues and oscillation right off of the bat. The wire routing is actually pretty good on the layout - it makes decent sense. A little bit of care to keep the leads short would go a long way into having a nice, working amp.
