1  British Style / 20 Watt Lead, Bass / Re: Lead and Bass Honeymoon on: October 04, 2012, 07:38:16 PM
I boost the Beast with a VoodooLabs Sparkle Drive. 'Nuff said (a TubeScreamer would also do). Just back down on the "Drive" and max the output on the pedal. The Sparkle Drive has a blendable clean boost, a very neat trick to put some punch back.
The guitar sounds like a much larger Strat than it really is!  Grin

Cheers,
/J

I own a Keeley modded Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive and it sounds great with the 20 watt Lead & Bass however, for some time I've been using the Keeley/Boss BD-2 Blues driver pedal to astounding results (along with jumpering of channels).

thats cool.  I'm still loving the sound from mine.  Love the trio tone as well.  Anyone ever used a smooth and slim?  Apparently mayer uses one in front of his SSS to tame the highs.

I have a Ayan Smooth and Slim, and it's NOT used to tame the highs.  The S & S realigns all the frequencies entering the preamp.  The low frequencies are adjusted so that you wont experience flab and inarticulation at higher volumes due to the bass being amplified along with all the other frequencies. It's probably a (hipass/bandpass) filter that only manipulates the lows and effectively readjusts to suit.  I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Gil Ayan took this design from the front end circuitry of one of Howard dumble's amp designs.  The S & S pedal is supposed to be the very last pedal in line to the preamp of the guitar amp.  FWIW the S & S does what it claims to do.

I'm the proud owner of one of these babies.  I absolutely love the sound, and I think it's an amp that Nik could do well with sales wise.  The Fender Blond Twin had the same circuit (6G14).  I have NEVER seen a used 6G14 Blond Showman on eBay EVER! at least not a 60' or 61' model.  I really felt as though I had acquired a rarity when I came across this amp.  The late Jimmy McCullough of the band Paul McCartney and Wings had one or more Blond Showman amps, and some vintage Marshall 1959 heads running through vintage Marshall cabinets.

I understand that this is the most collectible Mesa amp of all time.  I'm very surprised that Nik hasn't jumped on the chance to reverse engineer this baby and add it to his list of other fine amp offerings.

It means a Rotweiler's on your ass, and you're the "cat".  That's what we call "Pussytrim" lol

Hey guys, I just signed up here on the forum.  I have been a regular at Lick Library and have expounded on the benefits of going the kit route especially with Ceriatone as there are so many models to choose from at excellent prices.

Getting back to the subject,  I have been a owner of the Marshall 2061X head and 2061CX cabinet for awhile now.  I jumper the channels (always) and have experimented with different patch configurations to change the amp's voicings.  I own quite a few guitars and am a lefty.  This amp accepts and plays well with all my guitars (strat, tele, PRS, SG, ES-335, Les Paul, Gretsch G6120 Brian Setzer, etc.) I'm always hearing guys saying I turn up to 10 but with a decent overdrive there's really no need.  You can place the volume level prior to breakup and use a good overdrive and be in Marshall heaven real quick.

Steve, I'd purchase a completed (but unloaded) Marshall 2061CX slant front cabinet from Sourmash Cabinets for $300 and load it with G12H Celestion 30 watt anniversary speakers for another $300 or less.

Thanks for all the info!

I will never use it at home, only at band practice and smaller gigs.

Nik suggested the PPIMV mod and tad mustard caps as the only mods on this amp.

I have an actual Marshall 2061X head and Marshall 2061CX cabinet.  Never use it at home? What's that all about? Why not?  The LAR/MAR PPIMV upgrade mod is what I would use and if you want to take it out of the circuit altogether then just crank it to max and use your regular volume as usual.  The caps I'd suggest using would be original mustard caps that you'd have to source yourself OR I'd use Sozo capacitors AND upgraded trannys preferably Mercury Magnetics Radiospares or Partridge clone trannys.  Graydon Stuckey at GDS Amplifiers supposedly makes a hellacious OT and PT set made just like the (Radiospare or Partrige) transformers as used by Marshall in their 18 and 20 watt amps, and probably much cheaper than the MM transformers.  Half power or a percentage of full power should be designed into the power tranny similar to what Mesa Boogie did with their Mark I amps to simulate the brown sound, but this idea is better conceived and suited to higher wattage amps.
