I'm very (very - almost painfully) close to ordering an Overtone and I think I've settled on the non-HRM version which I'll be having built for me by a custom amp company over here in the UK.
From what I'm read the OTS has quite a "mid-heavy" (for want of a better term) tone to it. In theory would it be possible to change components out to reduce the overall mid-content of the tone? Am I right in thinking that using the Jazz setting reduces it somewhat?
It might be that the sound of the amp stock would be what I'm after, and I'd give it a month or so before tweaking, but I'm just thinking out loud (as it were).
Finally got the courage up to record a demo of my OTS. Theres just too many great demo's on the tube already! cheers, Scotti
Scotti,
Great demo. Another request here for details of what speakers & settings you have your OTS set up with as that's pretty damn close to the tone I want when I get around to ordering one. Also is yours stock or have you done any mods to it?
Edited to add: I assume your OTS is the non-HRM version..??
Anyone checked out the Hilden ODS on ebay? I think it sounds great, much more fendery than OTS.
I think it's early 80s with fender values (still has accent knob).
Maybe I'll do that version too.
Hey, I'll do a free amp to anyone who can give me the MOST complete detail for SSS. This includes chassis/hole sizing info (CAD would be great), schemos, layouts, original pics, etc, and can consult/teach if I see something weird. Any takers?
THanks!
Nik
I hate to say it, but I think anyone who has that information already would probably be building their own SSS clone!!
I would love to see a Two Rock flavoured Ceriatone amp though, maybe a single channel, clean only....reverb would be the icing on the cake...you could take some inspiration from the Fender AB763 circuits in the blackface era amps...
Since the HRM is supposed to be a bit more for the "rock" crowd, could you appease us with some classic rock type riffs, just for fun? I'd like to hear what the amp can do beyond the typical Robben/Larry genre.
Oh man, this GAS is killing me and now I have 2 different models to choose from.
I understand the difference between the 2 models on paper (the different tone stack in the OD section) but am interested to know which would allow me to get the type of OD sound I would want.
Let me just say that I would mostly be using the amp on the clean side and using pedals for my sounds, but would want the option to run it without a pedal board at jams sometimes and would like to be able to get the sort of lead sound I hear in my head from it. So, can the HRM OD section be made to sound the same as the non-HRM OD section just using the controls on/in the amp? (Cos if it can then obviously there's no reason to go for the non-HRM model)....
Please help...
FYI - if I could get the OD sound Richie Sambora gets out of a Fender Tonemaster on the These Days album I'd be in heaven, but I long since gave up chasing that tone..!!
I'd love one, it just might be too similar to the OTS. Nivce to have a valve driven reverb though.
I wonder how litigious TR are?
Whilst I know Two Rock's aren't a direct clone of a Dumble circuit, they are still a d'type amp at their core - with a good dose of Fender as well from what I understand - so I wonder how sound TR's arguement would be if they did try to sue....
+1 on a D'type clean amp, be it Two Rock, SSS or similar +1 on tube driven reverb as well, but Nik doesn't produce any reverb amps so I would be suprised if he did that.
How do the cleans on the HRM compare to those of the normal OTS?
I know the main difference between a HRM and non-HRM D'type is the extra tone-stack in the OD side of the amp, but has Nik changed any values that affect the clean side?
I'm very soon to be getting a new amp and am absolutely torn between the OTS, OTS-HRM or a Fender Vibro-clone.
Basically, will I want to get a big, warm, pristine hi-fi clarity clean sound out of the amp. Not too bothered about OD sounds as I'd largely use pedals for those, but I've heard that HRM d-types get closer to Marshall OD sounds, so that would tend to push me in that direction, but the clean tones are much more important to me.
Long winded title I know, but it pretty much says it all....there's a Fender 59 Bassman reissue I'm considering as it is a cheaper way of getting a decent cab and speakers for the 5F6A from Ceriatone that I think I might get (plus I have an amp to play while I wait for the 5F6A from Nik!!).
There's 2 questions I have though;
First will Nik's chassis fit straight into the Fender cabinet?
Second, the Fender amp has it's 4x10" speakers wired to give 2ohms, but Nik's layout shows the switching options as 4, 8 & 16ohms.
I'm going to email these to Nik as well, but he's a busy man so I hoped you guys could help!!
I sent a PM to "Kitarist"... he's the main guy around here
Thanks. I guessed you had to ask someone, but wasn't sure who...
Now at least I know where to find the images of this gorgeous amp to drool over while I save up the funds for mine....seems so far away, especially as I've now decided to get a new Tweed-type amp first (ducks....)...
Okay I'm sure it is, but given that the PAB takes the EQ controls out of the circuit, is it still possible to change the sound of the amp by changing component values inside it, for example to give a more scooped clean tone?
I'm sure no-one will criticise and I for one appreciate you doing it, I just wish you were coming nearer to me!
Cheers

Yep, completely agree. I think we understand that you're not doing it to plug your band, more to give us UK-ers the chance to see and hear and OTS before we order one....potentially....
Isn't it an easy fix to swap it from 240V to 120V? Looking at the schematic, it looks to me like you would just need to unsolder the wire from the 240V tap on the PT and reattach it the the 120V tap...of course if I haven't built one so aren't sure....guys?
A competant tech should be able to swap it over for you.
