great feel, great playing, great tone....

62  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: The Robben Ford-quest; how close can I get on a "standard" OTS? on: November 04, 2010, 10:01:23 AM
my thoughts......regardless of the mods i have found that the pickups in your guitar will influence the amp the most.....especially humbuckers.....i have found that PAF like humbuckers are the best to achieve the robben tone....although my yamaha SG also gets close too. ... albeit the yamaha pups have quite high output.

i would suggest using some nice alnico pickups in your guitar and the rest is up to you and your hands.  PAF's are great for this amp as they have clarity and match the amp well when it comes to the touch sensitivity from clean to dirty just by changing your touch and picking.

RF has many great tones on his albums and i guess like all of us... he changes his settings for each song and type of guitar depending on what is required.

you know some of the most brilliant guys in history all were quirky... many were loners

yes, mr Dumble is a quirky guy, but we must still remember he is the man who developed this legendary amp.
given there are maybe 200 to 300 amps in existence over a 40 year period, thats not much of an income... i guess its no wonder he charges so much.

in some ways he is to be admired, if he went down the mass production path, he would be a multi millionaire.... but it seems he has chosen lifestyle and doing it his way....

there are a couple for sale on Gbase last time i looked for USD60000
65  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: alexander dumble on: October 23, 2010, 01:18:09 AM
you know guys

if i owned a dumble it would be locked up and would never make it to a gig except with a squad of security guys around it.

Niks amps are excellent, and as well know well, we all tweak them one way or another until we get them to sound we want them to....excellent quality and price..... you would never do that with an original HAD

its somewhat akin to owning a rare guitar....you put it away and scared shitless of marking it......it becomes and collectable object. yet the guitars which i build myself are the ones i play, because i am not scared of doing stuff to it until it sounds and plays the way i want to.

hi all

i was wondering if anyone knows if its true that Alexander Dumble passed away this year.

i do recall a few years ago he even had a website. i have not seen it in years

moreover, wikipeaidia has a single line referring to thsi but its unclear

given he gave birth to this amp, i was wondering if any knew
67  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Tube Recommendations on: September 09, 2010, 04:31:17 AM
hi guys further my previous posts..... (HRM50 with 3 mullard reissues) i recently was servicing an amp for someone which had SOVTEK 12ax7WA tubes.... well he wanted the tubes changed.... so i took the liberty of trying the sovteks on the HRM50.

after a bit of experimentation i have now settled on the Sovtek in V1 and mullards for v2 and v3. the amp has little less gain but more "open" especially with a strat or firebird.......even at higher levels of gain in the overdrive channel, these guitars ring true and sound excellent.

i will stay with this config (for now as it seems to give the best overall tone and clarity and warmth)

there is a Sovtec 12ax7 LPS available (long plate version) which i am yet to try, and may do so when i get one.

the tone and overall warmth and clarity is great on either channel with this current valve complement.

IMO the Ev's are steller for headroom.  The 65's are nice for low level OD, they do something weird @ high volumes ( then again I play really really loud. Its all Personal preference I guess.
I had the impression you use a EVM12L and a Celestion 12-65 in one cab? Do you like it?

yes i have an EV in the combo cab and a 65 in a 1x12. they sound great together...both 16ohm so i run the amp at 8ohm when have both on

you are right though..... my back is taking a beating with the EV in it!!
69  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Speaker choice on: August 04, 2010, 10:40:50 PM
a man after my own heart!!! i said it too about the 65's... they lose definition and just sound kinda flabby at high volumes.

the EV is perfect at any volume
70  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Speaker choice on: August 04, 2010, 06:29:46 PM
i have the EVM12L in my HRM for about a week and wow!! what a difference!!...its like the amp had opened up. i have used it with my band pon two occasions... and have to say the amp sounds louder and punchier. i also used the G12-65 (which i had in there before) in a separate 112 cab together with the EV and that is VERY nice...they complement each other well

but the EV is THE speaker to use with this amp.
71  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: FYI Custom stacked pots on: August 04, 2010, 06:21:28 PM
i was considering duplicating the entire clean channel in the amp... and using dual pots to keep the front panel tidy. maybe one day.....reason being that way i can have independent settings for the clean and OD settings
72  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Tube Recommendations on: August 04, 2010, 06:17:29 PM
i agree with you i put mullards RI in too and the tone is perfect....at all volumes
however an EH for V3 seems to give a little more clarity, albeit drives the output tubes a little less hard

73  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Overtone Soundclips on: July 31, 2010, 02:37:39 AM
hi guys

as a follow up to my previous post....i have had the EVM12L in for a while now......and i have moved the G1265 into a 1x12 cab. at lower volumes, the two speakers are similar, maybe the ev has a little more highs...

where the difference is....at high volumes......the EVM is BOLD, and clear.....hardly changing its overall tone.... whereas the g1265 tends to get thicker.

i have the two running together, and wow what a nice combination!!

clarity and creamy speaker breakup.......lovely tone. the evm dominates though...probably because of its higher sensitivity....but its a great combination.

my opinion is this: if you dont plan to gig (ir play at high volume the evm is overkill.; and the g12-65 id perfect....but for playing at gig levels....the evm just gets louder with little change in the charactestics of its spectrum....

i will take some try and get sone clips together soon.
74  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Where can I adjust bias and OD-pot on: July 22, 2010, 09:27:41 AM
without hearing it.... it could be any number of things..... starting with your guitar pickups, pots , cable, etc

also preamp tubes...... the first one will have most effect on the overall tone of the amp...... and the last one (V3) which is the phase inverter has a larger impact when the amp is turned up. V2 will affect the quality of the overdrive sound. i have no experience with tungsols as i have always used EH and Mullards.......try swapping preamp tubes for different brands and see if there is any difference. Nik has told me that tungsols have given him many headaches as they are not consistent.

but ..... i am just guessing........because i havent heard it.

but i would definitely try trying different preamp tubes
