yes the EVM was very much a sterile speaker when new (and very bright), and it has taken literally months for it settle after being installed. i have noticed in recent weeks that the midrange has started to change as it breaks in...and take on some character. but as i said before.... it still sounds great as you turn it up and does not turn to mud like the g12-65. i use the two together for must stuff and they work well together, however the EVM sounds prominent

the amp gets a hard workout for 4 to 6 hours every week with band practice... and then another workout with gigs as they come up.... i guess it will keep improving with time.....

i reckon mine too a month or so to break in....
however i changed the original G12-65 to an EV12L and that speaker is just starting to settle now after about 4 months (midrange is becoming warmer).....the amp gets about 6 to 10 hours of hard playing per week

i also recall nik saying the ot needs a while to settle too....... but i have to say....from the moment i turned it on and plugged in ....its been heaven....

the topic on preamp tubes has been done to death here i reckon...

but for what its worth:

at present i am using:

V1: sovtec
V2: JJ (smoother and a little more compressed for overdrive)
V3: reissue mullard .. seems to dive Output stage harder

output tubes: winged C...... excellent tubes

i am currently using the Biyang range of pedals

they are as good as anything out there... and not expensive.


they have taken the best of whats out there and made some pretty good clones....in particular the x-drive, reverb pedal, delay, and chorus

and i also use the phaser... classic 70's sound

check them out you will not be disappointed

actually i do this for a living.... however i get them manufactured in china.... and upgrade all the guitars here

they are all made to my specs and my designs

and very well priced. i play and gig  my own guitars too.... thats my benchmark...

and yes i take orders...... (i have another one of these guitars tucked away waiting to be set up!! hehehe)

my first gretsch-like guitar was the perfect rock machine.....semi-solid like a 335 so you can turn it up and it had plenty of sustain. and of course the bigsby trem is a must as it adds its own chime to the guitar. today i fitted a roller bridge to it to maintain tuning stability. and tomorrow i need to make some wooden plates into which the filterons will mount. filtertrons screw into the body like P-90's and therefore normal humbucker routes must be adapted for this to get the correct height.

i build lots of retro style guitars for people and the HRM seems to like all pickups humbuckers, fender singles and P-90's....i expect the filtertrons to be excellent too.

i will post pics and maybe a recording for you to hear the results.

i will finish my gretsch/gibson-clone tomorrow... its like a 335 with a bigsby and filtertrons..... i will let you know how it goes.... i expect it to be excellent too.... my last one was similar and a great guitar..... but someone made me a ridiculous offer and so i sold it to him... lol

i have a collection of guitars and i must say they all sound great through the HRM

my favorites are my 80's Yamaha SG1500 and my early 90's edwards les paul
both guitars are reasonably priced and much better sounding than most gibson LP's

my firebird also sounds like heaven through the amp.... mini humbuckers are so sweet  and yet can get nasty when you want them to.

every guitar needs its own amp setting though, depending on output and brightness.......

two things that got rid of the darkness on my amp:

1 put an EVM12L in
2 slightly changed settings on OD internal tone stack....inceased trebles and mids to 1oclock (not too much or it will affect the low end)

i build and sell guitars for a living.... and finding the right pickup for a particular guitar can drive me crazy.....however its not just the pup.....its also the tone pot.....i generally will swap in the pup i think would be good..... then i will cange the pots to get a sweet tone....not to trebly and not too dark. strating with the volume pot and keeping the tone pot at 500k. the 500k tone pot has less influence in tone and then i can change to 250k  and play with tone cap if i need to reduce brightness more.

the g12-65's are a great speaker, but i found it useless in the combo in its own....it changes its tone at higher volumes.....at bedroom levels its great. so i put the EV12L in the combo and use the g1265 in an extension 112 cab.....they sound excellent together becauae the EV provides the clarity and solig low end... and the g1265 does its thing in support of the EV.

if i was to use two g12-65 then it would probably not be such a problem as the speakers would be sharing the load and not driven to the point where a single would be.

i have an amp with a weber blue pup 10 inch and it can sound a bit thin at lower volumes but boy does it sing when opened up!!

doc .... any experience with weber clones of the fane axa's or crescendo's?

i have an LP with a SH1n in the neck and SH4 in the bridge (nickel covers which help to make thm brighter)...... and i agree the sh4 can sound a tad thick and dark in the guitar, but i love the tone i get with both pickups on together. all pots are 500k but the dark mahogany tone complements the pups well.

i recall RF removed all the pots out of his axe and only used a volume pedal to control his volume......maybe this is how he gets some clarity out of the SH4....? (this was when he was still using the fender signature model)

maybe a 1Mohm pot will clear it up some.......any thoughts?...
