It takes between 40-100 hours for the amp to "burn in" - so be patient my friend You could let it play with a CD/MP3 player and a perhaps a dummyload on the speaker out a let it play for a few days. I made the mistake a made a zillion mods to my amp, right after I finished it. I did so because I too was disappointed in the amp. But, rest assured it will soften after burn in period. You should try to adjust the internal trimmer to 8:30-9:00 - put it way down low, and you will find the sweet compressed tones og Larry C and Robben F

what would be the effect of those last changes?
Ad A) The lower snubber values on V2 gives more highs, when engaging the OD Ad B) The lower resistor in the PSU gives more preamp anode voltages Whether this is good or bad depends on preamp tubes used, taste etc.. its all very subjective

A dozen changes ? what are talkin about? I didn't have the May layout. My comment was comparing April to current. Still it was an interesting exercise. Jim Fair enough

I'll venture a studied opinion and say that Nik has formally incorporated some of the changes that were offered here in early summer based on the Ayan/Lerner/Zucker mods and subsequent discussions.
When comparing the April 1 rev to the August 26th revision I stopped counting after seeing no fewer then a dozen tweaks.
Jim
A dozen changes ? what are talkin about? There are only two changes in the august version compared to the may version!! A: decreased snubbercaps on V2 from 390pf in may to 330 pf in august B: decreased resistor value in the PSU the 3K9/2W has been reduced to 3K3/2W increasing PWR line plate voltages. No big changes - and not important changes as well - Check the tweaks in the forum to see some of the important mods.

Patience my man is all you need - the amp will seriously soften aften a month of intensive playin'. Don't modify it too much before its been played (broken) in.
I've bought 4 x 12G65 celes on ebay and they sound very good as do a lot of other speakers familiar to the celestions, because they tend to break up sooner than EV's, JBL's and Altec, which are pretty hard sounding (when used at bedroom level or even small gig level). They are great for Jazz and country though and for Mark Knofler and EC, who play areans and need a lot of power before the spearkers break up.
I'm sure you would also get a pretty harsh sound if you connect your DRZ amp to the EV speaker. IMHO

Hi there,
It sounds like you could have missed a ground connection somewhere in the preamp section Or have a missing/cold soldering somewhere.
Check the ground connections all the way from the jack input to the master volume. there are around 5 black wires the needs to be soldere to the chassis ground lugs and to the brass bar that runs above the pots.
I missed grounding the brass bar and had a loud hum when engaging the OD
Remember patience and thourough-ness will get you past this amp issue

EMG's are great for distorted tones a la lukather and nice for 80's direct-in-pult funky rythm sounds as heard on michael jackson records of the area.
However, not the route to great blues sounds and the like.

First of all – is your OTS modified? I have TR CRS 50 and CRS100 W also TR Kimok 50W and after 2 months of extensive tweaking my 50W OTS sounds bigger and sweeter than all of them. It also can do Plexy and Hi gain as a third channel. Beauty of the Dumble circuit is that one can tweak it endlessly. I also compared my OTS to my friends BLUDOdrive by Brandon Montgomery (exact copy of Robben Fords Dumble) and they were pretty similar. BTW if you want to hear it side by side with a BLUDOTONE come today to my gig at "the Winkfield", Lovel Road, Winkfield, Windsor, Berkshire, SL4 2ES, gig starts at 9pm. So don’t be broken hearted! Tweak your OTS and it will sound better the Matt’s amps Which tweaks did you perform on your OTS
