241  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: decupling caps on: May 19, 2011, 02:06:28 PM
If You dont know what coupling caps are, you shoild Probably keep your fingers out of a tube amp.

Just a kind hint

Do you have any suggestions on where someone who is completely comfortable working with High voltage could learn all these terms?
I mean like a layout which identifies the special name that goes with each component!
It seems that if you ask a question that should be welcome in a builders forum, you get the " If you dont know, I aint telling " answers

90% of my day job I am exposed to much greater hazards than the innards of a tube amp. I've built 2 the paint by numbers way really and I know exactly how to work inside amp safely but that has nothing to do with the fact that I do not know where the coupling caps, snubbers, etc.

I really want to learn all this stuff but cant seem to get straight answers from anyone!

Thank

No never use a fuse rated higher than what is called for Shocked
Or else your amp will just protect the fuse from blowing Wink

You asked what HT was

High Tension Fuse
High Tension is just another way of saying High Voltage.

WOW
one thing I do not like about MC is the way they do they're spec sheets.

Thanks MrGoldtop

Now I know what to use for my next OTS build ( someday )

245  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: 50 WATTER OR 100 WATTER on: May 18, 2011, 08:06:54 PM
Well i went with the 50Watt FM50 and love it. It is loud enough for anything i will ever use it for!
I have not played a 100 watter so cant give comparison.
It is cheaper on tube replacement, especially if you go NOS.

Not sure, but I've heard the only real difference will be the amount of clean headroom!
Loudness difference between the two is only 3db fully cranked

Hey I was just looking up PT specs for that 40-18029

What did you do for the 50v bias winding?

I do not see a 50v tap on this PT

I think you said you have the original OTS
http://www.ceriatone.com/images/layoutPic/OvertoneLayout/Overtone-Special-V2.jpg
That is the link to your Layout.
just below the Power Xfrmr you will see HT fuse 0.5amp fast blow.

If you go back a couple post's and read Soundperf's comment on the fuse ( he changed it from fast blow to slow blow per Nik ), that could be the reason it blew. If you put another fuse in and it immediately blows again, at that point I can only recommend bringing it to someone qualified to diagnose.

If you read a few post's above you will find that he is no longer giving the schematic away. At least that's what I was told when I asked to see it Huh?

There are only 2 fuses
1 on rear and 1 on bottom
none inside chassis.

Your HT fuse is the one on the bottom by the power tubes!
Unplug your amp before checking these!

If you are not technically experienced with working on amps, I would suggest not opening chassis as you may have heard there could be deadly voltage present even when unplugged!

It seems that most people that do the safe power up, do the light bulb method.
I took the cross your fingers and hope it works approach! It worked!
Hopefully someone that has used the variac method will chime in.

I got same reading with PT connected!
disconnect PT heater wiring and then meter!
I cant remember if the pilot light was connected or not.
It should be open ckt >1Megohm with only the heaters wired.
