181  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Any thoughts on HRM MK2 ? on: July 15, 2011, 03:58:58 PM
I should have mine built by saturday evening Grin
I will let you know.

A while back I asked Nik if it sounded Marshally due to the EL-34's .
He replied back that it was not at all Marshally but Greasy, Dumble sound.
I will report back once I get the feel and how it compares to my non HRM FM50

One more thing I will add is to start on the outside and work your way in. In other words try to get everything done that you can without the preamp and PS bd's in yet. Especially the input jacks and mini toggles, then add the relay bds. This is just my way of doing this and others may have built these the opposite but I find it much easier this way. Let me rephrase much less difficult.

hi it's a non HRM OTS 50w, all standard apart from the valves ,i thought the ratio was like the gain and the level was the uh !level of the drive please give me more info guys ,does the ratio adjust between the od and clean ,,sorry if you all know this stuff but we all gotta learn ,and mine didnt have a manual with it.

Ratio is pretty much OD volume as compared to Clean it does not affect gain, level is more like your gain/OD level.
Use it to match your OD with your clean and that's it.

So I am on the way with my OTS 50 build and I have a few questions. I have been reading on the forum for a few hours and cant seem to find what I need.

Is the bus bar "floating" above the pots? As in only being held by its connections to components/pots.

On the ceriatone layout there is a numbering system for all the connections like "b13, b14, f3, f5, ect". Whats the story with all of these? I feel like I am missing out on some sort of build guide haha.

Where do I use shielded leads? I am assuming on pins 2 and 7 on v1.

I have built a 5e3 and a 6m36 but the wiring of the input jacks and control pots confuse me. It seems like everything is connected. On the NOR input jack it seems like the tip is connected to ground at all times by the green wire connected to the black wire labelled A going to pin 2.
I am looking at Rob Livesey's pictures of his build and it seems like he is wiring the master, ratio, and level pots with the green connections on the layout being ground? I am confused.

Let me know if there are some better pictures to be looking at for a reference of lead dress and how to wire up the controls. Or maybe a helpful thread that covers stuff like this that I have missed.

I have appreciated reading your findings on other threads T Wilcox and SoundPerf. Thanks in advance.

Hey

1. Yes the bus bar is floating and held by the connections! it will be very secure once you have them all soldered. I actually just did mine on my HRM yesterday.

2. Not sure about numbering system but more lettering. There are 2 of each, so in other words where you see A at one point a wire will go from it to the A at another point and so on. The way to route the wire is on you or you can check pics at Ceriatone site.  Edit: ok just checked layout for your OTS50 and it does have a numbering system of some sort for most every wire. Not sure what it is and would have to say it is unnecessary for the build, I built the FM model and did not need to use any such system if that helps. Probably a way for Nik to help troubleshoot over the email with someone ( check the connection at B-14 )

3.No build guide but on my first one the build video http://www.overtonehrm.com/
helped out quite a bit.

4. If you look at the layout where the wires land at the level, ratio and master pots you will notice there is a little circle where the wire splits off. that is the shield and anywhere you see that it is to be a shielded cable. Take wire x for example, at the other end where it meets the board the shield is cut off. The shield is only grounded at one end! Not at pins 2 and 7 but where they meet the terminal strip the wire labeled A and B would be the ungrounded side of the shielded cables.

5. The cliff jacks are such that when jack is inserted the ground is lifted. They are called shorting jacks but they actually open the circuit when jack is inserted. The layout is correct. Make sure you wire exactly as pictured. Check the pics on the ceriatone website as well, they are very helpful for doing this build.

6. Not sure about Rob's build where are you looking at this? Not looking at your layout I beleive the green connections you speak of are the shields which will be grounded and the center lead of coax's  goes to  othere terminals on pots.

7. I had trouble understanding how to lead dress the RG-174 on my first build, there is a thread from me asking about it. Do a search here ( RG-174 ) it should pop up and if I recall there was very good advice on it.

Watch that video I linked and then check pics at Ceriatone site and if you have further questions feel free to ask

Let me know if anything here doesn't make sense and I will try to explain further

One last thing, before reposting in this thread, start a new thread labeled need help with new OTS50 build. This will help future builders, atleast if Nik ever brings back the kits

Which model do you have again?
If its non HRM that is what the ratio knob is for.
The volume ratio between clean and OD Wink
between 12 and 3 oclock is where I set my volume knob and then with footpedal switch back and forth while using ratio to make both equal.

Thanks guys

Well just got my cast off my right hand yesterday, so Im learning how to play guitar again. Been a thumbpicker for the last six weeks.

I have spent too much money on amp kits to be able to afford a proper recording device at the moment as well. Grin

I promise eventually I will get something posted, but it may be a while. Man it's hard to compete with some of them clips by Sami and Mcinku though, I actually have been modifying my style to fit these amps. Everything I played before was more high gain and hid the mistakes that I constantly make Wink

BTW credit for the Head cab and 2x12 go to Henry, username: Tenguitars. Found him in the classified section here. Great guy to deal with. As soon as I build my HRM I plan on getting him to build me another one.

Thanks again guys

No problem at all

Heres a pic of my 11 incher Shocked

Add 3 inches and your good to go

Mine is not a standard Dumble cab but actually a 2Rock style which I guess is just 1" taller.

Hey Kevster

My cab right now is 11" top to bottom. The OT is actually the lowest part of the amp! It is 7" from top of cab to OT.
My cab is built from 3/4 ply. My C-lator is approx 1 3/4 in height.
If I was to have this same cab built for 2 rack units with plenty of room for tube removal it would be 14-15" from top of cab to bottom of cab, hope that helps somewhat

Well hate to be the one to tell you but Nik does not sell kits anymore Cry

http://www.ceriatone.com/tlbrBorderSub/Kits%20Announcement%202011.htm

You may find what you are looking for with a Weber kit although I've never used Weber, I know they have a few Fender type kits

Good luck

I'll measure mine this afternoon and get back to you!

The lowest part under the chassis is the tubes, so if you took the height of a 6l6 and then add 1 1/2" under it for clearance than add the height of 2 rack units you would be fine as well.

I will get back to you with exact dimensions though

192  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Stalking a new Ceriatone Overtone FM50 Mod Eagle... on: July 06, 2011, 02:13:05 PM
Well as far as burning in goes I did not notice as much tone change as others here.
I liked the sound from day 1. But when I put new speakers in my cab, it took a week or so to get them sounding theyre best.
Since I've gotten it so much has changed from the tubes I used to the speakers, settings, etc. I cant really tell what burned in.
The only thing I've noticed degraded the tone was when I put my JJ 6l6's back in to save my ANOS Sylvanias some play time. The Sylvanias are so much warmer, creamier. They are off by a few Millivolts on the bias so that may contribute to the sound I like as well. The JJ's are just much stiffer sounding.

You'll like it either way, Im sure
