Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: My OT build

Thanks guys. I went for the Two Rock look in the end, I reckoned that the wood bar would be easier than the aluminium strip.
The cab belongs to my Fender Twin which I separated into a head and cab, which I'm now going to sell since its really is p**s poor compared to the OT. I think I'll build another slightly bigger cab that stands on end like the TR cabs and fill it with G12-65's.
I will post a head cab drawing as soon as I can update it to take account of all the mods I did as I went along. It will be an easy job to adapt to make a combo, just longer sides plus larger section battens to mount the baffle. I quite fancy a combo but am unsure whether a 1x12 will do the amp justice
Great job - love the cosmetics you chose as well!! When you say you'll post a head cab drawing, do you mean a design plan - cos that would mean I could get a decent joiner/carpenter to build one from your plans, rather than paying the extra an amp builder charges...

Jack,
Sorry if you've mentioned this elsewhere - at work so having to be sneeky and can't browse all the threads:
What speakers are you using with you OTS?

Tworock uses Emi RW&B speakers. I previously had a love affair with these speakers but lately we've had a falling out. I now consider them too dark. Which Two Rock speaker is the RW&B, they have 2 different ones offered, one being slightly brighter than the other. I think I like the idea of mixing 2 different speakers to get the tone I want - Would a RW&B and a Wizard be a good mix? That's news to me. Where is that info listed? Just checked the EMI site. There are not 2 versions offered. No, what I mean is that Two Rock offer a choice from 2 different speakers in their cabs: http://two-rock.com/products/spkrs.htmlLogically only 1 of those 2 could be the equivalent of the Red White & Blues, just trying to figure out which, and what the equivalent of the other speakers would be... I've read somewhere that two-rocks uses the Eminence tonespotter speaker (which is a clone of af G12-65)... But I can't say for sure... René I've asked both Eminence and Two Rock and all I get from them is that the Two Rock OEM speakers are a propriatory piece of equipment and they won't publish the specs...

This might be a dumb remark, but what about starting out with the OD channel and setting a higher overall Volume and then using the ratio pot to turn down the clean channel.
Isn't the Ratio control only for the OD channel? How could you use it to turn down the clean channel? I'd be tempted to try a different preamp tube in V2 to try and lower the gain that way so that you can run the controls slightly higher....just a thought, but I did similar in a Fender amp when I wanted to reduce the overall gain, but increase the usefullness of the drive control.

Archtop - amen to that!!
I've been guilty myself of wanting to own gear because I like it or because someone else has it.
Finally I've gotten to the stage where I'm trying to pin down the tones I like and that suit my playing.
Case in point, in 2004 I got a Clapton Strat and loved it because at the time I was heavily into EC and playing a lot of his stuff. Then early last year I changed it for a John Mayer Strat for much the same reasons.
Now I have a mongrel strat based on what I liked most about each of them. Body and Neck from an EC Strat but with passive, vintage sounding electronics retrofitted in it. It's my #1 now and I can't imagine I'll ever sell it. I now want another strat, but it will have differently voiced pickups, and a 335 - but all because I want them for how they sound, not because someone else plays one...

Two Rock use OEM eminence speakers in their cabs, if you can find out which aftermarket unit is the equivalent, I'd be very interested too.
I'd heard that the Red White & Blues is a good match with Dumble type amps and is one I'm considering for when I order an Overtone.
Hopefully only 2-3 months more waiting now - I want to be able to afford to order the Overtone in kit form from Nik and then a custom head cab and 2x12" cab from the guy who's going to build the Overtone once it arrives all at the same time. I had considered various options - from ordering the complete Overtone in a Head Cab from Nik, to ordering it in kit form and building it myself as well as the cabs. At present I've settled on ordering the kit from Nik and having it built by a local amp builder who's a Ceriatone Service Agent and getting him to build the cabs at the same time. That way I minimise both my wait time and my exposure to Import Duty and Tax. The one option I'm still waiting on getting a price on is ordering the amp complete from Nik without a head cab and then getting a local joiner to build the cabs for me, but me finish them myself...

American Style / 5F4 Super Amp / Re: 15" Speaker in 5F4 Super Combo?
|
on: May 07, 2008, 07:54:04 AM

Emailed Nik and he advised that unless I have access to a 15" speaker to try and to be sure that I like it, then maybe I should consider a combo that I'm familiar with.
How would you compare the response of a 1x15" to a 2x12" as that's the other combination I'd consider going for...

Website, Store / General / Best Amp CHoice for 1x15" combo?
|
on: May 06, 2008, 11:00:05 AM

I'm thinking of ordering a 5F4 kit to have a go at as my first build (was thinking Overtone, but have been convinced that I'd be better off getting someone in the know to build that for me!!).
I'm tempted to built it as a 1x15" combo, but was wondering:
a) Is that a good choice of speaker to pair with that amp? b) Is there a better choice of American Style amp that Nik produces to partner with a 15" speaker for straight forward blues sounds? c) What is a good choice of 15" speaker?

hywelg, have to ask, where in the country are you?
I'm guessing from your Matamp comment that you're from the UK...am I right?
I ask because I'd love to be able to try out an Overtone before ordering...

I am very, very tempted to have a go at building one myself.
I couldn't build the cabinet, but a friend of my fathers is a wizz with wood and I'm sure he could put together a very sturdy Dumble-style cabinet for me to cover and attach all the parts to.
I also am lucky enough to live near Matamp and know one of the guys who works there, so I am sure he'd look over it for me before I fired it up.
It's not just a matter of saving the 12 weeks wait once the order is placed, it's the difference between being able to order in another month or so, or having to save for a few more months before ordering!!
I'm sure between me and my dad we could, with the appropriate research, do a decent job of building this amp...would need to buy a new soldering kit though, mine's getting a bit past-it since it was a cheap-and-cheerful affair I bought when I was a student...
