Yeah i was going to suggest you just get an epi valve jr (as the "studio" marshall) and a champion 600 (as the fender) and use and A/B/y box for channel switching

i changed to a fender choke and it seemed to help the sound. i havent tried different PT and OT though. Also just an FYI i wouldnt bother spending the $300 or however much the MM power tranny is just because the actual PT doesnt have any effect on the sound. (mercury magnetics will try to convince you otherwise for obvious reasons. $$$) the voltages do matter though. And different voltages doesnt garentee better tone. It could easily ruin the tone. A different OT will definatly change the sound though weather it's better or worse is totally up to your ears.

I think Nik is working on a 5ish watt OTS with a preamp out so it'd be perfect for studio work. You could buy a tube power amp and run the preamp into it for gigging too.
OTS= Fender cleans, dumble OD which can be voiced more towards a Marshall or Mesa with the right values and tweeking.
I think Nik needs to build KT88 tube power amps it seems hard to find any good power amps for under $1000

i dont try to emulate other player's tones, but to me the JJ's seem kind of "dry" or something. they just dont do it for my ear. I have an old RCA in V2 and a tungsol RI in V1. When the RCA dies it's going to get replaced by a Mullard RI. I dont ever buy NOS tubes i found the RCA thats why it's getting used.

if youre talking about the V3 tube go with a long plate with balanced triodes.
I like the JJ803s as it gives a nice bit of lower mids and sounds very smooth.
I dislike JJ's in V1 and V2 though

I think you need 100 watt OTS HRM or HRM Bluesmaster. Also you have to add more overdrive cnannel gain via OD Trimmer. Put it on 12 O'clock.
+1 an OTS HRM can probably nail that tone. the bluesmaster could probably get it more "easily" but i'd buy the normal OTS HRM

IMHO it looks like too much trouble for me to do. but also this isnt a power tube distortion amp so there is not really a need for power scaling although i do think the amp sounds much better louder but i think its more because im moving air and pushing the speakers rather than working the power section harder. Needless to say if my OTS came with power scaling i would NOT be upset about it ...unless it degrades the natural tone of the amp from the extra circuitry

D style amps have plenty of chord definition. I think people go by the myth that midrangy amps arent good for chords. I find that if i use more mids the chords sound even better and have more clarity as long as the bass isnt too over the top.

Forgot to mention i changed the choke to a Fender (the model dumble used. theres a thread here somewhere) and it took away alot of the buzziness and warmed it up. I use a custom telecaster tone dimed. Rock, mid on, bright off, treble 4, mids 6, bass 4-5. Presence 4, volume 5-6, master to taste.

These amps should be "burned in" after about 20 hours of play time you will notice a smoother warmer sound. Your speakers could also be part of the problem. Raising the values of the V2 snubber caps will take some high end off the OD
