Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Anyone Using a Zendrive (or derivative) with Their C-Tone?

Hey Guys,
Was wondering if any of you were using a ZD with your C-tone. I had one years ago that I used with my Fender RI 59 Bassman and while I liked it, I don't think I appreciated it fully for what it was. Also, I think I wanted something with a bit more gain.
Anyway, I know that Mayer has used them with this 2Rocks and Dumbles, so I thought I'd give it another whirl. Also, found a local guy here in NorCal who would do a clone for $130, so that cool!
Thoughts?
I have one in my GCX... It is a ZD1, and it is a good stomp OD. Would I buy it again? Ahhhh.... probably. It is a great lead OD pedal. It doesn't do subtle that well, for that I'd do the OCD again in a minute.....

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Fx in the clator or back out front?

I would agree with the out front thing, unless you have a Minimix II or X-Blender. I've just added the latter to my FM50ME/C-Lator/G Major II w/EVM12L and it just leapfrogged right over the "out front" sound I was using before. Without the X-Blender, it was sucking tone!!!
So, I think that may be why some of the real tone heads around here use the MMII for loop effects.
The X-Blender was worth EVERY PENNY to get the tone!!!

I am the proud owner of a FM 50 ME. I also relied on Todd when building it. I guess I can address a couple issues for the board.... Finally, a chance to give back a little bit!!!!
I've been using the amp in a church setting for about 3 months. The clean channel sounds great. I can get good clean LP tones. I've been using it as a clean platform with a pedal board, and I have a G Major II through a C-Lator in the loop. I have an EVM-12L in an old Crate combo cab (temporary), so it has a nice full sound.
Right from the start, the overdrive was a little fizzy with a few "ice-pick" frequencies in it. Because of that, I didn't really play with the OD channel much. I bought new tubes to start with and wanted to get a couple NOS tubes to see if that takes the edge off, but I haven't yet. I also got the parts for a treble bleed, but I haven't had time for that.
Well, after ignoring the OD for a while, I've found that a lot of those problem frequencies have softened somewhat. The OD is good, but not stellar. I can run the OD trimmer up to about 11 o'clock before it gets annoying, but I stay down around 9... Some of all this may be tubes, some of that may be the need to rebias, or some of that may be pedals up front that aren't true bypass. I just haven't had any tweak time... I'm a FULL TIME student again and a business owner, so all my free time evaporated at the first of the year.
Since I only have one OTS amp, I can't comment on the others. As far as the ME, the clean channel starts to break up at about 6-7 or so. I don't like the "clean channel break up" on this amp too much, but I am pretty picky. IT is a GREAT clean channel, but it started out as one of two OD channels. It took hours before it cleaned up!!! The amp is a winner, but a few tweaks and some parallel effects action will really improve things... I already tweaked the Slope value to get it a little lower in the mids... Good mod.
Hope that helps!!!

Hey, great news Nik!!!
I did have one request about the whole "Pack 1 + Assembly". If you included a way of feeding at last the OT wires into proper routing (OTS) without disturbing the board, it would probably avoid (or possibly) disturbing the hard work done by you or your guys. I was REALLY careful, but stuff happens and that is pretty tight in an OTS.
Awesome news about the kits though!!!! I might just put one on my wishlist!!!!

I'd thought about both, but I'm not quite sure how I could make that work with midi... Defined values I can do, but a variable value I haven't got a clue. It may be doable and I just have to find the right info...
Is this something you've heard done?

OK... My 50W OTS FM ME has been up and running for a while now and it is in the now finished cab. I need to do a couple of tweaks to the electronics still so I'm not really "done with it", but I've been using it at church for a couple weeks now. This weekend I use the onboard G Major II for the effects...
So I had a question about one of the mods I'm considering. I'm thinking about eliminating the PAB "manual" option and switch on the back and (in its place) I thought about putting in a rotary switch instead. The switch would be wired with resistors ranging between the stock 10M (about parity for volume with Rock and Deep engaged) and 22M as you find with the Mega-PAB mod. The reason to do it (at all) is obvious, to increase the boost from the stock level. I really think the appropriate amount of "boost" isn't static to all playing situations or songs, so having options might be good. I feel like whatever value (or boost) I chose would always be a compromise. I really don't like to settle on anything with this rig....
So, if I did the mod using several different values, it would work for now to give some time to find the "right value". I do plan to add a midi foot controller next year, so that brings me to another set of dynamics effecting my options. If I like the variety and feel of the multi-value/boost mod, I might create an external midi-controlled "boost module" that would give me outboard contol of the boost rather than using a manual switch. Too soon to say on that though... I want to see how it works out first.
So here are my questions for the resident experts...
Has anyone tried this or something similar?
What do y'all think?
Thanks for any feedback.

not to thread jack, but i was interested in this a few months ago and this was the consensus on the best way to run the mini mix with the c-lator for parallel mode and keep the c-lator as a global master
Preamp Out=>C-lator In=>C-lator Send=>Mini Mix in=>Mini Mix Send to effects=> Mini mix return from effects=>Mini Mix Out=>C-Lator Return=>Power Amp In
hope this helps!!
Gregg
That was my plan...

Hey guys-
I'm an aussie as well =) Perth.
Thinking about getting an OTS soon- what you guys using for a buffered loop?
I'm not an Aussie, but I'll jump in here... You mean besides the Dumbleator/C-lator (Tube) and the Klienulator (Solid State)? Yeh, I've been looking at Fuchs verbrator, looks more portable and has reverb I've seen something somewhere about a guy picking up one of those in the last couple of months. He was very happy, but there were also some that had used a Verbrator that weren't. I know, not real helpful without a link.... I went with a G-Major II through a C-lator AND a Suhr Minimix II (as soon as the Minimix arrives). I hope to thin out the herd of pedals on the floor!!!

I've got the FM50 ME that I'm finishing up and going to be taking public in the next month or so... I've voiced it a little different thanks to some serious help around here. Thanks SO MUCH!!!!! So I'm going back to the well again.... I'm using the C-lator, and I'm going to have a G Major II in an extended, two-rack space head cab (just got the cabinet joints glued in the garage yesterday). I got the G Major II about two weeks ago, and I DO hear the impact of the "digital" in the effects. On the advice of some around here, I've been looking at the Suhr Minimix II since I'd decided to go with a rack effects unit. So before I pulled the trigger on the Suhr, I wanted to see if anyone had any opinion on either the Minimix II or the Xotic X-Blender. The $50+/- difference in price makes it worth asking about. So.... I know that a number of players use these effects interfaces, so anybody have any good or bad experiences with either? Are the extra X-Blender features worth getting it? I've not heard any negative reviews of either, but I leaned toward the Minimix II because Suhr has an amazing reputation. If I go with the Minimix II, it'll go in the bottom rear of the head cab. The X-Blender would have to go on the floor (size and to access the controls). I'm also looking forward to a Voodoo Labs Ground Control Pro in the new year. If anybody would recommend something different on the midi foot controller front too, please do... I'm going to be pulling the trigger on either the MinimixII or the X-Blender in a couple of weeks. I'm planning on a January 1 debut for the rig. Then I'll probably add and/or subtract some pedals over the next six months to a year, so then I'll be able to integrate the midi controller once the rig is stabilized. Wow, talk about being efficient with my posts!!! One thread for everything. Thanks everyone!!!! I looked at both the Mini-mix and the x-blender when i was considering going Parallel, and I liked both of em. The X-blender has the nice abilty to go from series to parallel at your toes which i found appealing, plus the added touch of the boost, phase, and the bass and treble tone stack. In the end, i wound up sticking with the c-lator only as the only two effects i use in the loop, the RE-20 space echo and the Holy Grail Nano don't sound overly digital, sound very good in serial mode, and don't suffer from tone suckage when bypassed. What really stinks is that i believe the original G-Major was able to be run as serial and parallel. Although I did a little reading on a review on the G-Major II at musicplayers.com and found something you may find interesting. "As with both the classic G-Major and the modern G-System, TC Electronic provides a few preset routing options for the chain of effects: Serial, Semi Parallel, Parallel, and Serial 2. In all cases, the filters and compressors come first. The signal is then routed as illustrated": (i'll attach the images to the post) "While users of the older TC Electronic G-Force will once again lament the absence of completely programmable routing options (as they did with the G-System’s similar scheme), we have no issues with it. The partially fixed signal path ensures seamless patch changes with delay and reverb tail spillovers, which you don’t typically get from gear that allows for the full re-ordering of a signal chain". "The Serial 2 Routing option is similar to the Serial option, but it places the entire modulation effect block in a return loop of the delay block in order to create modulated delays. With this approach, you can add any type of modulation to any of the delay types, which is far more flexible than simply having a Rate and Depth chorus option tacked onto the end of a single delay line." I don't know of you have messed sround with routing the effects internally in a parallel function and if it will help or not, but if you haven't give it try! Who knows, it could save you from having to buy a parallel mixer. Hope this helps! Gregg Thanks Gregg! I've got it in "parallel" now. The G Major II does NOT go parallel in the true sense of the word. It will stack several effects in parallel so as to remove (or inversely, add) the cascading effect on the signal, but it does not operate in parallel in the sense of signal throughput.... It still goes through a digital box and comes out the other side. I'd looked at the routing options when I was shopping and thought that might be a big plus, but it ended up not being a solution... Either the X-Blender or the Minimix II should sound OK I would think... I don't know that I want the new pedal on my board!!! I'm trying to thin the herd with the rack unit!!!! LOL Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you for posting these thing Pickmaster!!!!
Actually, the high gain mod might be interesting to me too.
I took a look at your suggestions and mapped them out... Just some clarifications... Like the "Master" mod, the existing Bright Switch has 66pf and 120pf caps. Couldn't I just change the 120pf for a 33pf and be there? V2 (your B2?) already has two 250pf caps and V1 has one. Everything else you listed is pretty straight-forward.
Now for this High Gain mod using the PAB, that is REALLY interesting. I'm not a HUGE high gain guy, but I do like some Mesa gainy tones at times. I've been asked to do Creed covers and the like, and I would prefer to do it with an amp rather than a pedal. I would think this mod would make a great sounding amp even more versatile... I'd HAVE to have THAT. So far, the PAB is marginally useful at best. If I gigged with it I might find out differently, but the boost so far has been minimal and tonally it hasn't gone to any kind of nirvana. Basically, I could do better with an EQ pedal...
I would like some more detail(s) on this mod. I LOVE pictures, drawings, diagrams, etc. If anyone has one/any, please share!!!
Thanks again!!!

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Tweaked Layout
|

I saved a link to this thread because I thought it was such a brilliant idea. Well my FM50 ME is here, it's a great amp, is currently up and running on the bench, and I've tamed the bulk of the ice-pick highs via the RG-400 cables with the C-lator. I'm currently running the amp through the speaker an old Crate amp as a test/break-in thing, but an EVM-12L is in the future. That being said, the amp is not blooming that much yet. I have at least 40-50 hours on it so far, but that aspect of the amp hasn't come to life as of yet.
So I think the 12-way switch mod is going to get done. I'll replace the unused ground switch on the back with the rotary switch and make use of a dead spot on the back. If "bloom" doesn't come alive with that, then Plan B is to modify the slope resistor. That's where I'm a little undecided. I would think that throwing another resistor on top of the stock 150K slope resistor would drop that resistance by an appropriate amount. The best thing, you could temporarily clip on different resistors to dial in the right resistance (essentially, "voice" that aspect of the amp). Once the "optimum" (I know, subjective) value is found, then solder it in parallel and go....
Well, these two ideas got me thinking a bit. Would a little variation in the slope resistor (either up or down in resistance) be adviseable? I know bloom isn't feedback per se, but most amps that I've played that had good bloom could also feedback a bit if the guitar was too close, amp was too loud, etc... Might it be a good idea to put a trimmer or small toggle to give me some limited options? If tweaking the amp to add bloom does make it somewhat more prone to feedback, then having the option to "switch" off the additional resistor would return it to stock and theoretically return it to a less feedback prone configuration. Am I off track about this?
Thanks for any input...
