The only way to get the experience of a c-lator is to plug it in and hear it for yourself. I can say that it changes the whole response of the amp in a good way. It adds a slight compression, a 3D effect, and gives you the ability to crank your masters on the amp and use the Level control to turn down the overall volume. If your using time based effects then a Dumbleator type device is a must IMO.
I've mixed an Ev with a JBL d120 with poor results. The JBL's break up weird compared to the Ev. Not that someone else may like this config. They are both great speakers for d-style amps. I tried a 2x12 Hardtruckers cab with JBL's @ one point and it was great. Tonetubby Hempcones are also awsome with my 100w HRM.
I'll have to second that half the amps Nik offers are because of the time and effort guys like Tony Albany and others @ the Amp Garage have taken out to make layouts and include info for all to see on the web. I have to give credit where credit is due. This is just a statement of truth, not meant to hurt, disrespect, or call out anyone, just the simply the truth.
Its not a huge secret that many builders build their 1st D-clone of Dumble Overdrive Special #124 (The 1st Ceriatone Overtone is a close approximation of 124) .Nik did not have to have any real amps in front of him. Dumble ODS's are slowly coming out of the closet and much information can be gleaned @ http://ampgarage.com/forum/
The loop on the OTS is just an interrupt type, ie totally passive.
The Clator is a unit that adds impedance matching/buffering so that pedals will work with the loop
(Note some pedals will work as is, and most rack units too, with the loop).
Not only that, some coloration (it's not transparent) occurs when the unit is used, mainly in rounding off the highs, and enhancing the mids.
Some use the unit without effects added, just for this effect to the amp's tones.
Furthermore, the level controls on the unit can also be used to further shape the sound / loudness.
Thanks!
nik
To elaborate:
The Dumbleator (Or C-lator) becomes your overall Master Volume when in the Loop. You can turn the Masters up on the amp and then be able to turn down the Overall volume to your needs whether low or high, good sounds come @ any Volume.
Here is a clip where ODS #183 is played side by side with the Clone made by Quinn Amps
The clone is on the left hand side and played first.
Okay, that was freaking insane playing right at the very end!
If the clone is first, that's really good! I didn't see your note above at first, and preferred the first one anyway. So, would one just tell Shad to make one a "#183"?
Yes, his version is obviously more accurate. If you own a dumble style amp already his Preamps are a great alternative to owning multiple amps. I got a #183 pre on order from Shad right now with ftsw''able FET. I'll be sure to post some clips for everyone when I get it.
