1  Ceriatone / Overtone / Alnico 1265 Weber...? on: May 10, 2014, 11:22:01 PM
Hi there... I see the Weber 1265 alnico has been discussed in some detail already, but has anyone tried it as the sole speaker with the standard OTS..?
I`m certainly looking at trying one in my 1x12 50 watt OTS combo.
Apparently the larger dust screen cap helps defuse and smooth treble frequencies.
I feel the OTS could do with some reduction in the treble frequency. It doesn`t have a piercing treble.. just prominent, so I run the treble pot quite low.
Weber gives the option of paper or hemp cone when ordering.... hemp could be interesting for a darker tone..!
Anyone tried the hemp cone speakers in their OTS...?
I`m looking for a smooth, fat, musical tone with reduced treble response from the speaker.
Perhaps the Tone Tubby hemp cone red Alnico could also be interesting.. although it`s a 50 watt speaker, where as the Weber is 65 watts.
Cheers... and thanks...

Great..! Nik makes really good amps & his service is top-notch. I`ve never played a TW amp, but i can say the OTS i have a stunning.
Just keep in mind speaker choice seems to be critical to get the best from the Dumble style amps.
There are a few posts here that cover the subject.. Seems to be the G1265 or EV for top choices for the D clones.
I`m running a Mesa C90 black-shadow and it sounds great.
I`ve also tried a JBL that had nice cleans, but sounded a bit too treble orientated & clinical with the OD engaged.
Cheers..
3  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Overtone v. Blackface? on: February 17, 2013, 09:12:56 PM
Email Nik from the Ceriatone site.. I`m sure the Dumble clones take around 6 weeks. When my OTS was built May 2012  the wait time was 6 weeks, although the amp arrived on my doorstep within 4 weeks..!
Nik is always really good to deal with and replies to emails promptly.
I have a 100watt OTS combo with 1/2 power switch added.. this mod was about another $15.. and a great option to have.
If you`re used to Blaceface Fenders, i would run a reverb unit in the loop of the Ceriatone.
There are a few reverb units that are highly compatible with the high impedance of the Dumble spec effects loop.
My TC Electronic Nova reverb is perfect.. although the Fuchs Verbrator looks interesting as well..!
Compared to Blackface amps, i feel the Dumble clones are a bit more versatile & have the mini toggle switches for Deep, Rock, Jazz settings etc.
The OTS has a slightly pronounced midrange frequency compared to Blackface Fenders.. which in my opinion is a good thing.
The clean channel on the OTS is very nice too... not to mention the OD channel.
New Dumble clone with brand spanking new components.. easy to service or mod.
The Ceriatone Dumble clones have bias probe points & bias pot mounted externally.. making adjustments easy.

Yes.. if the method of selecting half power is triode, then half power can be used on a 50 watt amp that uses two 6l6 or EL 34 tubes.

Yep.. works on 100 watt amps. Go onto the ceriatone amp site and email Nik. He`s great to deal with and will confirm the options for you on the different amp models Ceriatone offers.
I presume the triode half power option could be applied to most amps he makes.. but he will confirm for you.
The half power option on my 100 watt OTS cost about $15 USD. Money well spent..!
Cheers...
6  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Should a fender based circuit "amp of the gods" not sound awesome? on: February 10, 2013, 06:38:19 AM
My OTS 100 has a clean tone comparable to black face fender amps. The voicing is a bit different with more prominent mids. I think black face fenders loose something significant with the reverb turned off, so perhaps you need to look at that side of things.
I have a TC Nova reverb in the loop on the OTS and it sounds glorious..!
I`ve owned twin & super reverbs.. and both great amps, although i don`t feel they are superior to the OTS.
Cheers..

My OTS sounds great in both pentode & triode.
I think Niks half power switch to triode is an excellent mod.. giving the user more than one sonic option.
The amp still has plenty of balls and clarity in triode.. but it`s smoother, which can be a good option.
You can still rock out in triode, but if i were to play a jazz type gig, triode would be my choice.
There`s no mud at all.. just smoother and less in your face type tones.
IMHO the above makes the amp even more versatile..!
Cheers...
8  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: 4x6L6 versus 2x6L6 & 2x6V6 versus 4x6V6 Tubes in 100w Overtone Amps? on: January 20, 2013, 08:07:00 AM
From what Nik has advised me, 6V6 tubes are ok in the D amp clones as long as the bias is set correctly.
You will need to be careful which brand and type are used, and this is because the construction of the traditional 6V6 will not take the plate voltage in this amp.
Both the JJ and TAD 6V6 STR will be fine as these two different are built with a highr spec to handle both plate & screen voltage.
Do a web search for JOHN TEMPLETON`S 6V6 tube review and you will see that these tubes can take the higher voltages.
Apparently the JJ is a little more aggressive in tone, while the TAD is smoother and a little warmer.. more tradional 6V6 type tione.
Nik did say biasing 6V6 tubes in the OTS shouldn`t be a problem, although a simple resistor can be added in the circuit to get the bias down to the 20 -  24 mV range if the bias pot doesn`t quite get down low enough.
My OTS 100 in 50 watt triode mode is very smooth and probably a bit more 6V6 than 6L6 in tone because of the nature of triode mode on the power tubes.
In saying that, a quad of 6V6 with half power triode option would be interesting in one of Niks D clones.
Cheers...
9  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: 100w/50w Hi/Low Switches/Circuitry *** Any GOOD switches that ACTUALLY WORK??? on: January 20, 2013, 07:44:30 AM
When Nik built my OTS 100 May 2012, i asked for the half power mod, which is a toggle switch on the rear panel.
In half power mode all four 6L6s are still in operation, but switched to triode mode from pentode.
This gives the usual reduction in expected volume & clean headroom from  100 to 50 watts, but the tone is a little different.
Four 6L6 in triode gives a smooth & warmer tone than two 6l6 running at 50 watts.
It`s not quite as punchy as 100 watt pentode mode.. but i prefer the triode 50 watt choice to both 100 & 50 watt pentode.
Actually.. i think these D clones run around 90 watts, so half power probably around 45 watts.
Anyhow, i can recommend triode mode as it gives the obvious volume reduction, but also a nice change in tone character.
Hope that make sense for ya..!  Wink
10  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: 4 x 6V6 50Watt Dumble plate voltage too high on: December 29, 2012, 01:32:06 AM
It is essential the plate & screen voltage specs of a 6v6 will handle these D type amps.
TAD & JJ are both robust and will be fine. There are some good 6v6 reviews out there that cover this subject.
TAD has a more traditional type 6v6 tone.. where the JJ seems to have a more aggressive tone from what i`ve read.
Just make sure the amp is biased correctly for 6V6 tubes.
Nik said biasing shouldn`t be a problem, although he did mention if bias adjuster can`t quite meet 6v6 requirements, a small resistor mod in the circuit will sort that.
I haven`t installed a quad of 6v6 in my OTS yet, although it could well be worth it.
11  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Boxy PAB? Ineffective tone controls? I've found the design flaw! on: December 22, 2012, 10:36:44 PM
Have you had time to experiment with a 200K mr fabulous....?
Please let us know if you do...!
The fine tuning aspect of this amp is becoming very interesting..! Cheers
12  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Smooth organic tones 12AY7 on: December 17, 2012, 07:29:35 AM
Indeed a 12AT7 can be used, but where a circuit calls for a 12AX7 in the PI position, the 12AY7 is a closer substitute by construction, although it`s gain factor is lower than the 12AT7.
Fender used the 12AX7 in tweed amps PI postion.. by the time the blackface models came out circuits had changed somewhat including the use of 12AT7 in PI resulting in a cleaner tone compared to the earlier tweed amps.
I tried a 12AT7 in the OTS PI and it functioned fine, but i thought the amp sounded a little thin & cold compared to the warmer 12AY7.
Experimenting with different preamp tubes is a good and non-expensive way to help taylor the tone of an amp.
13  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: How to get rid of some Stiffness on: December 16, 2012, 12:49:18 AM
Try a 12AY7 in V3 (PI) position. I have an EH 12AY7 in my OTS 100. It makes the amp warmer and takes away some of the stiffness you speak of.
It`s a very cheap & easy mod and if you don`t like it, you could always place the 12AY7 into V2 for a smoother overdrive.
12AY7 is very compatible as a substitute to a 12AX7. It will produce less gain, but is warmer than 12AX7 tubes tend to be when pushed into high gain situations.

A big thanks to bluesking and mr fabulous for the info and your input.
Very helpful indeed.. Cheers Guys.
15  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Smooth organic tones 12AY7 on: December 15, 2012, 11:58:36 PM
Hiya Gregg..  Interesting you`re getting a slightly brighter tone. I`ve got EH 12ay7 in mine and if anything the brightness is tamed a touch. which is a good thing for me since the OTS seems to a touch bright for my tastes.
Perhaps that`s to do with where i`ve got them placed.
A 12ay7 is good in the PI position for smoothing things out & dealing with the stiffness the amp seems to have.
The 12ay7 is similar to the 12ax7 in compatibility and a good choice.
I`m pleased i tired them..!
Cheers.. Graeme
