Yep, it started doing the typical "valve implosion...spittin, fartin, and burpin" during rehearsal last night.  It was sounding and performing sooo.. good, too.  Kind of like a racecar just before it blows an engine. Grin

Oh well, back to the bench for a little TLC.

It's strange.  I've had my old Super Reverb, a Traynor ycv40wr and my Dlite have troubles in the past month or so....now the Overtone.  Hmmmm.....

No worries though.

Do you live in an area with higher than normal current ? I live in Denmark Europe, where we tend to have fairly stable current around 230 VAC, but higher at night 235 and down to 218 in office hours. High sparks on the grid, might kill an amp.

Normally, you don't have to care about this or even notice it, but time and again you might notice, that more than a couple of your light bulbs are failing within the same week...this phenomon is often due to over-current on the grid.
What can you do about it Huh?? Buy a 230 or 110 filter a connect it between your amp and the wall socket.

OR BUY BETTER TUBES ;-)

This was my initial thought too.

I run my amp through a surge protector designed for use with PC's to protect against spikes in power....

Hey guys,

I pulled the chassis, swapped all the tubes, and all the voltages check out fine.  I'll give it workout tonight and see how it holds up.

Wall voltages here in Japan stay pretty constant...just shy of the prescribed 100V and of course through a surge protector.

The Traynor was the only amp with non tube related trouble....cold solder on V4.

Hi ChrisL,
Great that your amp is back in business, and surge protector is always a good thing ;-)

Check your connections to the speakers. I had a similar situation where I thought the amp had gone bad on me and the speaker connection had vibrated loose, not off, but enough to make a bad connection. I always solder the wires to the tags now.

I had the same issue with the input connection tap on the input volume potentiometer. I probably heated it too much/ many times, trying out various "bright" capacitors. The result was a loose connection/ temp error. I disassembled the potentiometer and used a pair of pliers to squeese the tap firmly to the carbon trace, assembled it all, soldering everything back and problem solved....but it really pusled me, untill I found the error.

Thanks guys,

It's always good to have a fresh and extra set of eyes on a problem.  The Overtone seems to be behaving.

The Traynor is still giving me fits though.  I HATE working on PCB boards.

Cheers,

Chris
