hi guys

as a follow up to my previous post....i have had the EVM12L in for a while now......and i have moved the G1265 into a 1x12 cab. at lower volumes, the two speakers are similar, maybe the ev has a little more highs...

where the difference is....at high volumes......the EVM is BOLD, and clear.....hardly changing its overall tone.... whereas the g1265 tends to get thicker.

i have the two running together, and wow what a nice combination!!

clarity and creamy speaker breakup.......lovely tone. the evm dominates though...probably because of its higher sensitivity....but its a great combination.

my opinion is this: if you dont plan to gig (ir play at high volume the evm is overkill.; and the g12-65 id perfect....but for playing at gig levels....the evm just gets louder with little change in the charactestics of its spectrum....

i will take some try and get sone clips together soon.

That is one of the nicest tones I've heard from an OTS.

It was loud wasn't it!! I see your master was nearly at 2 o'clock.

Thanks! But actually it was not that loud, because the mastervolume at the HRM is for the clean channel only and the output at the c-lator turned it down, too.
When you turn it loud, it really sings with lots of nice sustain.
If you interested, I'll make more clips with different guitars, too.

Definitely nice tone and it will get even smoother with G12-65.

After some tweeking

50 watt non-hrm EL34, slope resistor is now 90K, and the snubber on V2a is removed, V2b was upped to 830pf

speakers are weber P12Q clone (Jensen) and a custom weber w/ 55hz cone, 1 3/4'' voice coil, AlNiCo magnet, and the same dustcap as the G12-65 for smooth high end, 65 watts

Really nice tone and playing.
Well done with V2 snabers and the slope resistor, I guess it feels more sponge and pick sensitive.
How you describe the difference in tone and feel between EL34s vs 6L6s.?

Cheers

Thanks! Yes definatly more low mids with the slope.

EL34vs6L6- To my ear EL34's sound pretty similar with a few exceptions. The EL34 as a whole seems more "hifi" it seems "faster" as well. The compression is more that you'd expect out of a compressor, quick attack, as opposed to the "sag" you get with 6l6's. The lows on the EL34's are much tighter. The EL34's seem brighter on the top end but suprising less harsh than 6L6's.

I have a #124 50w clone with Winged C 6L6 and an Skyliner HRM 50w with EL34B.

The EL34B's are like driving a big nice Mercedes as compared to a WV Golf.

Bigger low end on the EL34B's - like a 100w with 6L6.
Middle is less pronounced, which is great for an ODS.
Top end is nicely laid back and never brittle like 6L6 can be.

I've tried a lot of 6L6 tubes/valves in my #124 clone (GE 6L6, Sowtek 5881, TUngsol 6L6 among others) and so far the Winged C's are the closest to EL34B.

Hi
What is involved in running EL34's in a HRM, any mods needed and Biasing etc..
I really like the sound JD0x0 is getting, sounds a bit on the Bonamassa side of things to me.

JD0x0,

Your mods sure seem interesting! Could you tell what kind of changes it brought to the sound of your OTS?

I think you'll just have to bias the tubes. I run SED Winged C EL34 in my OTS and it is definitely more like a Bonamassa sound... bit more Marshall like. At least with this setup I can't get those great smooth thick tones like Marin gets with his OTS. Some friends of mine have referred to my OTS as a hotrodded Marshall JTM45... thick, crunchy and a nice aggressive top end... but I don't have a Klein or C-lator yet so the highs in my amp can be a bit more pronounced...

+1 im running those same tubes Winged C EL34 Just beware even though you might get a "matched" set the tubes will be off quite a bit (12mA for me)

The slope gave more low mids and bit more gain all around (the difference is small) The biggest difference IMO was it took away the "plastic" sounding midrange that I was getting when using alot of mids. It sounds more natural and smooth now.

I also lifted the NFB on V1 when I first got the amp, this adds some fatness as well.

The snubbers are a bit more complicated to explain. Basicly the first triode isnt rolling high end off any more, this is the half of the tube that should be compressing, V2b is what overdrives and has an 830pf value there. This tends to smooth the OD more IMO while still retaining a good amount of highend. Mismatched snubbers also seem to add more "chirp"

No klein or dlator, Just echo straight in the loop

A thing I recorded after quite a while. Finger still stiff and recovering, but the C-lator does wonder with the HRM! Wink

thanks for watching,

I am wondering... do EL34's output tubes lessen the gain of an OTS? All the OTS clips w/6L6's I've heard seem to be capable a lot more gain.

Here's a small clip of mine (w/EL34's) where I switch the deep switch on and off. Pre amp volume at 7, midboost on, overdrive level at 8, master at 4, no PAB. I played on a 1993 Gibson Les Paul Standard with Seymour Duncan PAF pickups. Fuchs Verbrator + EHX Memory Man in the loop. Forgot the playing  Wink
