I'm always surprised at the demand for internal reverb.

While I love reverb for an effect like in surf guitar (where the reverb unit is typically is placed before the amp) or just for some trippy psychedelia.  Additionally, it's become intertwined with a few eras of music...'60's Chicago blues for example were really wet with reverb, as are many of the artists it influenced...and, of course, Neil Young.

But in a professional situation, it's almost entirely unused. Live, it gets too wet too fast with any amount of natural room reverb, and in the studio it's never added until mixdown.  It is the reason that most Dumbles, Voxes (sp??), Matchless, Marshall, Trainwreck, etc. were mostly 'verb-less.

It is nice to have a little dimension to bring life into a dead room, especially when practicing at home. I admit very few of my heroes are Dumble, most of them...including Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, George Harrison Lowell George (Dumble user!), etc...have never used reverb.  Instead they use a little delay, which is much easier to keep dial down to keep it from getting "wet" sounding and can be used in front of any amp, introducing hi-gain. 

I'm neither condemning anyone for liking reverb, nor am I going to call it a crutch, it just a curiosity how such a divide grew between what is predominantly professional equipment and what is predominantly consumer equipment.

I agree. I pretty much always have a lil touch of reverb on, it's part of my sound. Between that and the Space Echo i get what i need as far as ambience, but the reverb is more important for my sound

Not 100% positive but I believe I remember reading on van amps site that it doesn't work well in the loop, and that they designed it for going in front of the amp, just like the old fender standalone reverb units.
