Hi guys! this is my first message here so...hope i'll be great in here!  Grin
let's talk about my dilemma:

i'm saving money to get my OTS, and i'm tryin to choice the right cab to get the tone i'v in my mind. let me first say i use a strato with a JBjr in bridge position and two SC in the others. what i want is a joh mayer-like sound...which cabinet do u think i have to buy?which speakers?

Don't know exactly what you mean by a John Mayerish tone, but I can personally recommend an Avatar 2 x 12 open back cabinet with a Celestion Vintage 30 and G12H30. This cabinet sounds great with the OTS.

 I`m using 2 different Avatar 2x12 cabs one has a Eminence Swamp Thang & a Lil Texas wired at 4ohms. The other is  like the previous posters w/ Celestions V 30 & H 30 wired at 8ohms.  Both great cabs!

I just received a 2x10 cabinet made by Swanson Cabinets in Mass.   It is an awesome combo amp and I use a weber svt and rajun cajun speakers.   There is also a good discussion on the subject "speakers" in this forum.  Good Luck

I'm using a Fuchs, front-ported 1x12 with an EVM-12L (16ohm) in it right now.  It sounds great, to my ears, anyway.  I used to have an 8ohm Warehouse Guitar Speaker E65 (Celestion G12-65 clone) in the Fuchs cab.  It also sounded great, I'm just preferring the EV right now.  BTW, I use a stock Mex Tele (backup guitar), or my #1, a Les Paul with a JB in the bridge & a Pearly Gates in the neck, RS pots & caps.

As usual; choosing speakers is subjective.
I really dig the heritage celestion g12-65. Recently I compared them with some other speakers(emi RWB, celestion v30, greenback and a celestion speaker used in the mesa f50 series). For the overtone the g12-65 is my choice. Really nice sparkling fat clean, thick mid overdrive tone. The celestion V30 is really thin comparing them. In other amps they are the bomb(v30) but not in the overtone.

Thanx everybody for the answer! i was interested to a 2x12...but have absolutely no idea for the speakers...i was thinkin bout g12-65...but i play funky too n i wouldn't like a too fat sound! it's a big dilemma..cause how can i try a cab if i don't have the OTS yet? eheh...

by the way...that's what i mean when talked about a "john mayer-like" sound:





in the videos you can here the both OD and Clean sound...

Johm Mayer uses 2rock amps.
If you follow the clean side of pickmaster mods http://ceriatoneforum.com/index.php?topic=740.0 you should be close. In 2rock cabs, the eminence speakers are labeled as g12-65, but lot of players say it sounds exactly like the Eminence Red, white & blues speaker.
For Od JM uses a tubescreamer alike pedal with low gain and high volume.

I have a 2 x12 w/G12-65's they sound muffled compared to the V30/G12H30 combination. I have not heard the V30 alone so i cannot compare its thinness to the 65. It may be that the G12H30 adds some mids or bottom end to the V30, because just about any amp I play through that cabinet sounds great. I think it sounds beter than my super reverb or bassman which Kendrick black frames & weber speakers (respectively).

I have been getting that tone with a Strat, Super Reverb, Fulldrive2 (or some other TS9 based OD pedal) and a vibe pedal long before John Mayer became famous. You can get a similar tone with the OTS but it took me a while to get it down. There are a lot of switch positions and knob settings on the OTS and they have to be adjusted significantly to match up right with different guitars and  pick ups, etc. Nevertheless, it sounds great. Remember, it is John Mayer not his gear that makes his great tone. To really appreciate the refined sound of his Two Rocks you would have to be in the same room with them.

absolutely! i have no dubt about it!! i already have a ts9, a marshall BB2 and i'm saving money for a fulldrive2 (i even love stef burns!)...i'm trying to get gear to be as soon as possible to his sound, as i know it comes out from his hands!
this is the reason why i asked for an help in choicing a cab: who better than people who already got an OT can help me in this?!  Wink

what kind of difference you heard about H30 and 65?

IF you can try a Menatone Red Snapper, very transparent mild over drive, takes the clean into just breaking up territory.

I'm using 1x12, open back cab with a Jensen C12K (100 watt, 8ohm) from a '65 Twin RI. Very big sounding with punch and sparkle... and loud as hell! Great for blues, jazz, and all kinds of rock...not metal. But, then again, if you're a metal player, you wouldn't want the OTS anyway, right?
This speaker is...I know...not a D*mble type speaker and not what most people think of for this amp, but, it covers all the bases for me and is very economical as well. I got mine from a local shop and watched the guy pull it from the Twin. He gave it to me for $30US. I jumped on it and I'm glad I did. Sounds beautiful!

@ dannysgrandpa:  i'm not so shure about a 100W speaker, cause i'll buy in any case a OT 50! i think a 100W speaker won't as good as it can in a (100W) twin...what do u think?

@ hywelg: i didn't know the red snapper before, but i must say...WOW!!!it's beautiful! i'll try it as soon as possible!

I run a 1x12 and wanted a speaker rated around 100watts. The OT (50) puts out 38 watts but could peak around 70? if pushed, I'd say a speaker rated below 50 watts would be in danger if pushed hard.
There are plenty of speaker choices around so buy an unloaded cab and then pick the speaker you like the best.
On a note about  these clips they are  remixed live recordings at low audio quality. They may not reflect what you were hearing from the amp on that night or in allot of cases what was actually played.
