I've listened to most of the sound clips available and love most of them. I'm ready to order, but have a few questions for you forum locals:

I play Van Halen, ACDC, ZZ Top type stuff mainly, and dabble in Metalica, Pantera and more thrashy things on a limited basis.

JTM 45, Plexi 50 or 2204?

I think I know that the JTM 45's bottom is a little flappy at higher volume than the Plexi 50.

I wold be interested in the opinion of you folks on these models. Also, would you reccommend the master volume option?

I will be playing though a Marshall 4 x 12 cab with a 1958 RI Les Paul. Mainly a basement player, but play up to four gigs a year. I Don't want more than 50 watts.

Plexi is great for AC/DC and ZZ Top tones. Really it's the Tush tone in a box. And Van Halen will be just fine too. Might need a little help in front for Metallica and Pantera.

I like the Plexi over the 2204 because I think the Plexi has much nicer cleans a better break-up point tone. The MV on the 2204 does help get some great '70's rock tones as a manageable volume, something the Plexi may need an attenuator for.

The JTM-45 is a great amp, but it doesn't offer the same amount of crunch and immediate attack of the bigger boys. It's a little mellower all around.

Does the Plexi 50 have the option of a master volume? Otherwise, do you reccommed the ultimate or something like a Hotplate?

I also heard these amps take effects very well. Currently I run a DSL 100 with a little delay in the FX loop and a OCD out front. I realize there is no effects loop on the Plexi and I'm fine with that.

Since it's a Ceriatone, you could order it with a post-phase-inverter master volume (PPIMV). This puts the master volume after the phase-inverter (last 12AX7) and right before the power tubes. But an attenuator could go *after* the power tubes all together and then all you're lacking is the tone of the speakers being pushed to the point of speaker breakup (a part of that Plexi/Greenbacks tone). There is also the various Power Scaling methods (reducing the voltage to the power tubes). But the more you have to attenuator, regardless of how you do it,...the more you have to compromise on tone. So, basement playing while the kids (or neighbors) sleep may require some sacrifice.

As for attenuation method...everyone has their favs. These days, I deal in small amps (my largest is 25 watts, unless I reload it with 6L6GC's for 35), and keep a Alessandro muzzle around for when I need it. The Hot Plate is a standby and the Weber MASS is pretty popular now too. I have NO experience with the Ultimate Attenuator and reviews seem to be mixed (but all attenuators get mixed reviews, different ones work for some and not for others).

A good PPIMV would be out of the circuit when turned to 10, it could be a nice option to have anyway and may be good for combining with an attenuator.
