Title: New Amp Help Post by: Octopussy on November 22, 2011, 12:20:04 AM So. I have an 18 watt EF86 TMB and Super Champ amps. The clean headroom is pretty negligible on both and definitely not enough to keep up with a drummer. I need a new amp to play with a band and have plenty of clean headroom for small to medium size venues. Sometimes I think of just buying an AC30 and calling it a day but, they're big, heavy and I dunno, just can't pull the trigger...
So. I'm thinking a JMP 50 would be the wya to go. What do you guys think? Enough clean headroom? Thanks in advance for your thoughts! Title: Re: New Amp Help Post by: cmoore on November 22, 2011, 05:14:39 AM Fender Bassman Head will do just what you need. The "Bass Channel" is a miracle waiting to happen. It does not take much to change that first side into a great lead channel.

A non-master-volume 50-watt Marshall Model 1987 Plexi/JMP should have more than enough clean headroom for small to medium venues. As a mattter of fact, it doesn't start overdriving until it reaches the point of blowing an audience out of a bar (which are why attenuators are so popular). And even more tweaks ('67 specs, shared vs. split V1 cathodes, etc.) can be done to mellow them out if needed. By the way a TW Rockit is a Fender 5F6 or JTM45 or bright channel of an AC30 which I have used the Rockit for many gigs. To get more head room change the V1 plate from 220k to 100k-120K. To get a boost function you can add a Cliff jack to switch in a 10uf/25v bypass cap on V1b cathode. So... I like your thoughts on the Marshalls. I played a JMP50 combo which was pretty awesome. I already have a 50/100 watt Mesa Mark II which I need to use an attenuator with. I would like something that will overdrive without blowing people out and without an attenuator or distortion pedals. Is this even possible without a channel switching amp? Title: Re: New Amp Help Post by: plasticvonaband on November 23, 2011, 03:58:33 AM Sure. Nik's 5X3 is plenty loud for a club but won't take people's heads off. A 5F4 with a 2x10 speakers of lower efficency can stay somewhat clean (it shares the same architecture with a few resistor tweaks as the 5E5-A Pro and the 5E7) and then give up the overdriven goodness as well. A 36 Watt EF86 would be another good one. You could always Get a JTM45 or a 5F6-A amd put a PPIMV on it to get some overdrive (preamp) at lower volumes.
