The amp is an alleged 30 watt "Vox AC30 on steroids". I'm not sure about the metered wattage or the decibel reading, I CAN tell you that when I first plugged in and tried to play at volume 5 @ 30 watts (full power switch on) The treble (at 5 w/ treble cut at 5) through a custom 2x12 with Webers, the result was inducing involuntary, lip curling winces. This is the most aggressive 30 watts I've ever heard. I have some friends with 120 watt Crates with 4x12s and a 100 W Marshall also with a 4x12. I need to do a 1 to 1 with them, but I suspect this amp will hold its own. I know the output from 60 W Crate I had pales in comparison. The real plus is that the tone is phenomenal! I can roll back and forth a digit or two on the guitar volume at any setting and go from jazz clean to metal head crunch. If this is the lowest gain Trainwreck, I think I'm actually afraid of the Liverpool and Expression repros.

What I really wanted to know was whether you can get a decent amount of Overdriven tone at usable volumes..?? everything i've read (and heard) suggests that if you want reasonable volumes and overdrive out of this amp you either need: 1) an attenuator or 2) A MV or VVR #2 goes against Ken's orignal design and would probably effect the tone alot. Have you looked at Nik's Creme Brulee? It is the EF86 (overdrive/crunchy side) of the DC30/AC30. Lots of gain at much lower volume. Title: Re: How many watts? I've had one for about two years now and love it...I wanted an AC30 type amp I could build into a 1x12" combo (with a Weber and make an AC30 in a smaller size package. I also liked the idea of the half power switch for band prac' etc. I've got to say, the Rock-It is one of my main amps I use...I'm a real AC30 man at heart. I'd reckon it must be about 30 watts by comparison with my AC30 and other amps...but it might be pushing 40w!
Also, for band practice (60 Mod sounds through to a bit of pop-rock, with drums and bass etc) I can get away with running the amp on it's half power setting and using my vol on the guitar and picking dyamics for clean, crunch, and wind it up for solos. Suits me just fine! Full power copes well with full band gigs...although at really loud gigs you might need to use more speakers (I use just a 1x12" so don't push as much air as a 2 or 2 x 12") or mic up to a PA etc. We don't mic the amps currently. Post by: plasticvonaband on January 17, 2012, 01:42:51 PM on my HC 30 (well almost, it's an HC-34 actually, with EL34 tubes - but exact same preamp), the EF86 - channel 2 - is the CLEANISH side, & the twin ECC83 - channel 1- is the drive side. This was confirmed by Nik, & whenever I use the amp, EF86 side is the natural Robert Cray side, with lots of chime but still with a wonderful spank, & channel one can nail marshall tones,. Think Jimmy Page/Billy Gibbons in their prime. Whenever I try to push the EF86, it feels inadequate & not really at home. Just this persistant chime that I don't look for in overdriven tones... PLUS it does have more headroom that the dual ECC83s. This is Nik builder-notes & my experience & confirmation after 2 years gigging that amp. Yes, but the creme brulee was designed to go from spanky jangly voxish clean, to overdrive, to crunchy goodness, has a MV, switches down to 7 watts, and performs well at low volume. Some amps are designed not to break-up early or not at all. But, just wondering if using speakers with lower than desired wattage specs that would actually blow if an amp was dimed at 10 on the volume but would break-up if you managed to never dime the amp while driving those speakers to their limits "before" blowing them - haha Wondering what you think about adding speakers into the "overdrive/crunchy" equation??? Funny, I was just reading your post about your painted Fender Reverb on the other thread (I also had a brown Fender Reverb painted black years ago heh) Anyway, I was just investigating the TW's 'cos I don't know much about them I wanted to get something different to complement my other amps I've got an Overtone HRM and a BF Super Reverb so I figure a TW Rockit or 36 watt Marshall might be a bit different tone-wise I should check out more demo's I suppose I thought the Machine Gun demo on the TW site sounded pretty cool Fairly authentic to the Band of Gypsies sound |
