Thanks for this

Damn, I'm starting to feel something is wrong with the amp.   Sad

If I would have the amp, I would scream to the world how wonderful it is...wouldn't  you too?

Tell us SOMETHING!!!

Hey Folks,
I received the Overtone but I didn't get a chance to really test it out other than at low volumes.  Thus I can't comment subjectively quite yet.  BUT, I will say based on my experience with the D'lite and my old modded Bassman head I had..... THIS amp is a winner.  Full review, pics, and clips soon to follow.

ChrisL

cmon give it to us.... anything  Huh?

Is it so good you can't switch it off and write a little review for us?

Does the mod affect your tone much, if at all?

Actually it does... it's louder of course and the sound has changed as well. I would say that the bass response is different and the way how the amp goes into the drive has changed as well. I would say that with 6L6 there is more gain when pushed all the way. The grain pattern of the drive is different too, if you know what I mean.

1058  Custom amp building, Prototypes and other amps / Mods and Tweaks / Re: Changing a rectifier tube question... on: November 15, 2007, 06:20:17 PM
I'm no expert but it just depends on the amp and it's components.  There is a lot of speculation on the subject.  The 5Y3 will drop more voltage than a 5U4 so you are going to have a higher B+ so you will probably have to adjust your bias resistor value.  Also, a 5U4 has a higher capacitance value so your power cathode cap should be doubled.
The most important spec to check is how much draw your PT can safely handle.  A 5U4 requires a full amp more than your standard 5Y3.

Also, consider a 5V4....similar "less sag" characteristics as a 5U4 without the extra amp of current draw.

I hope you don't have a sovtek 5Y3 in there now.   Shocked

Thanks for your input.

I actually replaced the sovtek 5Y3 with some Russian NOS 5Y3. This sovtek rectifier was making some noise I didn't like.
BTW what is wrong with the sovtek 5Y3?
1059  American Style / 5E3 Tweed Deluxe / Re: 6L6 in a 5e3 on: November 15, 2007, 06:15:23 PM
Thanks. How do you like it? Same character but louder?

Anyway, it's not an easy switch to make back and forth...

I actually had 6L6 in my 5E3 from day one, so I actually don't know how my 5E3 sounds with 6V6.
You can hear how it sounds in a "5E3 Tweed Deluxe SoundClips" thread. I have a clip there.
I like it very much but you should also know I installed a vol/tone mod from Mission amps.

Yes I have it.

What you need is a bigger trannies to be able to take the load, different rectifier tube (GZ34) and a bigger chatode resistor (10W).

1062  Custom amp building, Prototypes and other amps / Mods and Tweaks / Changing a rectifier tube question... on: November 13, 2007, 09:19:35 AM
It's my Champ again   Tongue

...as I moded it to take a 6L6 tube I was thinking, what would happen if I swap the stock 5Y3 rectifier tube with something bigger like 5U4 for example. Would that be a stupid idea?

I sure don't want to blow up my Champ.

Mirc, that sounds awesome. Tell us more about your amp, what speaker?

MikeY

Thanks  Wink,

my champ has a few mods... Choke, Standby Sw., Tone Stack Bypass Sw. and switchable bias so I can use 6V6 or 6L6 for more power. I recorded this with 6V6.
I also used my Greenback 1x12" cab, MIC used was SM57 through VTB1 SP preamp. (no effects, just a touch of VST reverb for the mixdown)

Rhythm track my tele (neck pup) - Lo input, Bass at 10 o'clock, Treble at 12 o'clock and volume at 1 o'clock,
Lead tone the same tele (bridge pup), same input and tone controls, Volume all the way up,
at 01:39 Tone Stack OFF - Volume at full blast (Tweed mode kicks in)

 Cool
