16  Ceriatone / Overtone / Which wire gauges? on: November 29, 2011, 11:19:09 AM
Hello gurus,
I've been plodding along with my ots 100w build and am getting a bit concerned that I've been using the wrong gauge of wire at various points. Apart from the obvious shielded and fillament wiring I have identified a couple of unique types of wire:

1. long white wire - seems to be the same gauge as the thin Teflon stuff. From it's length I deduced that it is the lamp filament.

2. Thick red solid core - from the photos this seems to be for the floating resistors between the output tubes.

3. Thick orange Teflon - seems to be for wiring the relay power supply board to the voltage regulator chip.

4. Assorted colours of thin Teflon - I have used this everywhere else, choosing the colour that seems most appropriate at each point. I've ended up with some weird colours in certain places and even had to use the White lamp filament wire in places where I ran out of other colours (surprising as I have been generally very frugal with my lengths!). I sometimes used the excess normal filament wire as well (basically around the power socket and the various mains voltage switches as it is the thickest wire I got.

5. Long red cable for the relay board power supplies - pretty self explanatory.

Ok, so if the above is correct I see some potential issues. For example, the ground wire from the speaker jacks has ended up as thin Teflon. This is concerning as all the other wires (from the impedance selector) to these jacks are much thicker. Is this the wrong wire to use to dump all that output current to ground?

Any ideas or tips would be most welcome.

Thanks for the reassurance guys! I'm buzzing about getting this amp built, hopefully that's the only buzzing that will happen to this amp Smiley

Hi chris and many thanks for your view.

According to nik, the inductance and current handling ability are the same but the dc resistance is slightly higher (120 ohm rather than 100). Do you think this will have any tonal impact?

Thanks,
BK
19  Ceriatone / Overtone / OTS 100w choke on: November 22, 2011, 01:16:56 AM
Hi all,
New member but long time reader!

I've just received my OTS 100w kit today, looking forward to getting the build on! A question for the regulars if I may be so bold?

With my kit I have been sent a different choke to the one that normally ships with the OTS 100w. Its labeled on the list and the part as the choke for the DC30 kit. Does anyone have any opinions on how this may affect the sound of the amp? Nik has assured me that it will function fine, but I can't help but worry whether it will give me the sound I have been looking forward to!

Any opinions most welcome and many thanks,
BK
