1  Ceriatone / Overtone / help switching chanels with a midi relay on: August 19, 2012, 09:52:13 PM
Hey all, I'm wanting to make plug for the footswitch jack that I can hookup to my TC Electronics G system. The G system has a relay output for amp channel switching.. Basically I have two 1/4 jacks coming out of the G that the G will either open or close depending on how I program it. It seems like a fairly simple task to create a custom cable that has two 1/4" jacks on one side and the 5 wire midi connector on the other. My question is if I'm reading the schematic correctly.. in order to switch channels I just connect pin 4 (or pin 2 for overdrive) to ground correct? The 12v power is not needed correct?

Thanks!

Heater wires up are def the way to go on OTS and other fender based amps

The HRM pictures on Nik's site show the heater wires down. Is up best just on the non HRM's? I'm not that excited about my overdrive tone. It sounds kinda like a thin sizzle. I think it's a bit better now that I've had some break in but I'm definitely looking for improvement.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot
4  Ceriatone / Overtone / need some help trouble shooting ht fuse keeps blowing on: February 14, 2012, 05:25:11 AM
So my 1/2 amp fuse blows as soon as I take it off of standby.. but interminently. If I pull the powertubes and fire it up it does not blow and all the power supply voltages appear correct. I just had it working fine, played for like an hour. Turned it off, then out of curiosity turned it back on. flipped off standby and it blew. Replaced the fuse turned it back on and is good again. I also tried a different set of power tubes to no difference. what the heck!

Ok, go the problem figured out. The link that ties V3 pins 3 & 8 were missing a solder joint. Thanks for the input

Did some more poking around. The voltages on the actual pins of the trim pot I have even, but when you get to the other side of the 100k & 110k resistors the V3a voltage drops drastically.

very clean!

So, I've checked the PI trim pot today and it seems something is off. I'm getting a difference in voltage of around 180 volts instead of 6. Ive tried the full range of the trim pot and it really has not much affect. So the closest I've been able to get is V3a=257v V3b=436 volts. I've got a question emailed to Nik but thought I'd see if any of you experts have any suggestions. It does seem like the amp has a really lot of pop.. almost like a telecaster tone.

Fired my hrm50 up for the first time and everything is working just fine. A bit bummed that my power tubes are not matched well.. Like 3mv off.

Anyway I dialed in a really nice British crunch on the od channel. I am having trouble getting the smooth blues lead sound I've come to expect based on sound clips though. Probly needs to burn in a bit. Also I'm using a genz Benz 2x12 cab for now.

All in all I'm very excited to learn how to dial this thing in!

10  Ceriatone / Overtone / Almost done with the hrm50 build! just a qwik question on: February 10, 2012, 02:06:40 AM
I'm doing the final wiring tonight and I'll be ready to fire it up tomorrow.

My question is about the internal trimmer pots. Where should I set these to start with? I read some threads regarding the bass, mid and treble pots so am good there but there are 2 additional pots on the main board.

Also are there any test voltage levels I should check on the boards anywhere to verify everything is in order? Test Point's? just wondering..

Thanks!

you really can't go wrong with the stock JJ's to start out with the baseline and tweak from there. After all, it's what Nik builds the amp around  Cheesy

Thanks, that sounds like the best idea. I got a bit overwhelmed with all the options.

Alright, I need some help. My hrm 50 is almost done, just waiting for my trannies to show up. I need to order some tubes now. Can some recommend which tubes to get as a starting point? After reading some of the above posts I realize I have no idea what I'm doing, haha. I guess I have to start somewhere. As far as tone I'm not really sure. Id like the clean to be touch sensitive and I like harmonic content.. Um, for the overdrive singing lead tones but I don't want the rythym to sound too thick. Anyway, a recommendation and place to order would be awesome!! Thanks, B
13  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: where to get the hrm 50 PT in the US on: January 22, 2012, 02:18:26 AM
yep, i got a price from nik and is $65 more to upgrade to merc's. Still considering while I'm waiting for funds. either way it's about twice what I see transformer kits priced for for common fender or marshall amps.
14  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: hrm50 power supply board wiring question on: January 22, 2012, 02:15:23 AM
Thanks for the resources! That looks like a great book and would have been very helpfull had I read it before embarking on this project.

Hey, one more general question. What are the pro's con's or different applications for stranded wire vs solid?

Thanks for the response and yes I'm learning as i go but i do have a very good fundamental understanding of electronics as I was trained in a tech school and worked as a electronics tech for years. I just dont know amps
