32  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Kit or prebuilt on: November 28, 2008, 09:26:01 PM
I guess that I am an exception to alot of rules. I had a good deal of experience with a soldering iron, but, not with amps. I went ahead and ordered kit 2 and took a great deal of time building the OTS as my first build. I made a couple of mistakes, but, none were really big mistakes. The amp works perfectly and sounds fantastic! There are alot of great minds on this and other forums and people here are very helpful. Nik at Ceriatone is very good at answering email questions. If you are feeling adventurous and have a bit of confidence in your ability to follow the layout and photos from the Ceriatone web site, I say go for it! I even built my own head cabinet. and I'm just a guitar player! Grin Wink Bill

Finally, completely, totally done! Yea!!! Grin Until I do the deep mod and change the FET input to a mini toggle and wire it for deep and put a bright cap on the master volume.    Cool

36  Ceriatone / Overtone / Amp head covers? on: November 21, 2008, 05:42:11 AM
I've been wondering...what head covers fit the OTS? Nik, if you see this, will you be offering a cover anytime soon? Would be nice to have something with the Ceriatone logo on it. Thanks for the input guys.   Bill

The attack has a definite "splat" kind of reminds me of stepping in a water puddle. This is followed by the singing sustain. The6L6 has what I call more of a "pop" attack. Listen to some Larry Carlton and I think you'll hear what I mean.  Does this sound crazy?   Bill
38  Ceriatone / Overtone / Getting that "Larry" tone on: November 10, 2008, 05:50:22 AM
A long time ago someone asked about using 5881's in the OTS. Well, I have a set of Sovtek 5881's matched and biased at .33mV and I am nailing Larry's tone all day long! Mr. 335 himself uses Sovtek 5881's in his Dumble ODS 100's. He has #118 and #147.
Now, if only I could play like him...
The 5881 has a "splatty" attack when overdriven and a bit less gain overall. You can get very big grind with them though, just turn the OD level up to 7 or 8...maybe even higher and  hit the PAB! Leads will scream and chords... yes, chords will crunch and still be well defined and articulate.  I love this amp!!!!     Bill Grin Shocked Cheesy
39  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: "Deep" mod on: November 10, 2008, 05:30:09 AM
I am using a 335 w/ '57's, neck position on clean channel. I'm very happy with O/D. It's the clean depth I'm seeking.
Nik, thanks...I'll be using the bright switch for "deep" and replacing the volume pot w/ one that has a pull switch and adding the bright cap. Thanks for the input. By the way Nik I'm the guy in Vancouver WA USA that had the  busted faceplate and all the trouble getting my amp working. All is well now. I had the coil on the PAB plugged in backward and polarity on a resistor on V1 reversed. Simple fixes. Now I have the best sounding amp in the Pacific North West United States... in the opinions of a couple dozen friends and myself. Wink Grin Cool
40  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Having trouble w/ Clean Channel of my OTS 50! on: November 10, 2008, 05:17:04 AM
I have an unmodified OTS 50 (July '08) and I have all the clean headroom I can stand.  I run my preamp vol between 4 & 5 and my master anywhere from 2-6 depending on the venue. I have no problem keeping this baby nice and clean. The tone I get is very much like Larry Carlton's clean except for the "deep" switches on his Dumbles are actually "deep" not mid boost. Had this amp been modified before you got it? Check the cap and resistor values on V1 against the layout from ceriatone.com. Other than that... good luck.   Bill

Well, the staining and urethane are complete. Waiting for the corners and will put the tweed and trim on soon. Take a look, the oak took the stain very nicely.
The head is sitting on top of An Epiphone Galaxie 25 that is my back up and also serves as my speaker cab. Put a switching jack in the back and plug the OTS speaker out to it. It disconnects the Epiphone from the speaker, then, when I pull the cable out, the Epi is fully operational. Keeps me from having to haul two cabs around. Works out splendidly. Grin Wink
42  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Choosing cab on: November 02, 2008, 05:02:50 AM
I'm using 1x12, open back cab with a Jensen C12K (100 watt, 8ohm) from a '65 Twin RI. Very big sounding with punch and sparkle... and loud as hell! Great for blues, jazz, and all kinds of rock...not metal. But, then again, if you're a metal player, you wouldn't want the OTS anyway, right?
This speaker is...I know...not a D*mble type speaker and not what most people think of for this amp, but, it covers all the bases for me and is very economical as well. I got mine from a local shop and watched the guy pull it from the Twin. He gave it to me for $30US. I jumped on it and I'm glad I did. Sounds beautiful!
Simply my two cents.    Bill

Stunning is not what I was expecting...wow...thanks!!!! I put the first bit of stain on tonight and it's taking it well. I think I'll need 2-3 more coats before it is as dark as I want. Right now it looks very antique-ish. HMMMM, maybe... No, stick with the plan...go for as black as possible.
Thought about antique brass corners and a tan tweed face, but, couldn't find a handle with brass hardware. So, I decided on black/chrome/grey tweed. I very excited to get it done.
I've gigged with it in the unfinished cab and gotten rave reviews on the tone as well as the cab. As soon as I figure out my recording software I'll post some clips.
Thanks again for the feedback, I'm very appreciative!   Bill
P.S. The pic was taken with my cell phone, so, the quality wasn't great.
44  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Pics of completed Overtones on: November 01, 2008, 06:51:00 AM
Not quite there, but the cab is solid red oak and will be stained black and have chrome corners and a herringbone charcoal grey tweed on the front panel trimmed in black stained red oak. This is my very first amp build and I built the cab too! I'm very pleased Grin
45  Ceriatone / Overtone / "Deep" mod on: November 01, 2008, 06:06:57 AM
What is the difference between the Dumble "deep" and the mid boost on #124? Would this be an easy mod? Anyone here done this? Just curious. My OTS is AWESOME!!!!!!!! just the way it is, but, I still can't get that "deep", hollow,(like you can hear the glass on the tubes resonating) tone that Larry Carlton gets with his "deep" switch. Any thoughts? Thanks,     Bill
