1  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Best speaker?` on: May 07, 2009, 02:54:09 PM
Recently got a g12-65 and tried it out, maybe because it isn't broken in,  it sounded muffled. I cycled through all the speakers I mentioned before in the same 1X12 cabinet, and ended up coming back to the Weber Blue Dog
I have had the same experience with my G12-65s and they are very much broken in. It is very noticeable when you A/B them in real time with other speakers.  Judging from many posts in this forum, that "muffled" tone sounds very good to a lot of people using the G12-65 with OTS.

The Weber Blue Dog is a great speaker. I have 10s in Bassman Clone. My amp tech does work for Emerald City Guitars in Seattle, WA and we have had the opportunity to A/B my 5F6A kit amp with three vintage '59 Bassman amps. My clone sounds remarkably better than those amps. I have to attribute this to those speakers. The Weber kit that I purchased had the cheapest, crappiest, components. I have had to replace switches, jacks, various resistors and capacitors and the power transformer, but that amp has always sounded great, due to those Weber Blues.
2  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Swapping out the 12AX7 tubes on: May 07, 2009, 02:29:58 PM
Anyone swapped out the stock JJs for something better? Maybe Tung-Sol or Electro-Harmonix?

The Tung Sol 12AX7s are very gainy (too much for some situations, IMO). They sound pretty good, but I have had several go bad prematurely (after a few months),. Not Good. I also have a lot of experience with Sovtek, Groove Tube, EH, misc chinese 12AX7s, etc. I have some NOS Mullards, RCA Phillips, and a few others, as well. After all this experimentation, I have come to the conclusion that the JJ 12AX7s are the most consistent for good tone and reliability. I buy my tubes from Bob at Eurotubes. He hand selects his tubes for different applications and sells them that way, and I can tell you that the use of these specially picked tubes  really makes a difference.  Especially for the PI tube.

BTW I have had Sovtek 12AX7s, EL34s, 6L6s and have been disappointed with all of them. The reviews on Sovtek 5881s are not very good  either, notwithstanding the fact Larry Carlton makes them sound pretty good to my ears.

Your thinking is definitely "out of the box"! Quite the conversation piece.

Those Weber Blue Dogs are great speakers. They work well in my Weber 5F6A kit amp.
5  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Question about 5881s on: April 25, 2009, 08:24:52 PM
I am running Tung Sol 5881's. When I put them in the bias changed from 32mA with the Tung Sol 6L6s that Nik provided to 35-36mA. I left it that way and it sounds pretty good. A slight improvement (kind of smoothed things a bit)  over the 6L6's.

I would like to be able to use the "deep" (mid-boost) switch because some of the body I get from using it sounds really good, but so far it's been unuseable with the Strat, a little too woofy.

I too have had this problem with the  Strat. I don't think a speaker is going to fix it. But! there is hope....Check hywelg's post in the Greg Hilden wannabe thread. He explains how Matt Schofield sets up his two rock. I tried this and I was very pleased with the resulting tone and it seemed to remedy the "woofy" problem with the strat.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record..... Eminence Wizard, about $76.00 at ZZOUNDS
I have been alternating between a 2 x12 with V30 & G12H30 and a closed back cube with the Wizard  I play these side by side all the time. I recently picked up Nik's 2550 clone and run it with the OTS. I really like the Wizard best with either amp. The Wizard is actually louder than the 2 x 12! I have (2) G12-65s and I cannot  figure out the attraction to those speakers.
Although different speakers sound better than other with different amps I have not heard a Jensen Speaker that wowed me. I have Bassman with weber blues and it sounds great, the OTS does not sound as good through that cab. I have Kendrick blackframes in my vintage SR which are supposed to be best emulation of the old Jensens. Again I prefer the Wizard to those speakers with the OTS.

Not exactly the info you wanted,  but if you can, check out the Wizard.
8  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: How can I get Hilden's es335 + dumble tone with my OTS???? on: April 21, 2009, 09:48:57 PM
Right On, Hywel! It works nicely. I am always unhappy with my slightly over driven  neck pick up tone on the OTS. Too much mid range for my ear. Your Matt S. settings really fix that. For some reason, though, I lose some of that prototypical Strat neck p.u. tone. But it still sounds great and I can't wait to use those settings at the next gig. Thanks for posting that!
9  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Has anyone experimented with an impedance mismatch on their OTS? on: April 21, 2009, 08:33:40 PM
Well I have screwed up a few times and forgot to switch back to 8 ohms after running parallel cabinets. I ran the amp for several hours with no negative effects. On the other hand, I did not notice any change in tone. My OTS did not sound like I had put a Mercury Magnetics OT in it.
10  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: OTS MFX Recommendations? on: April 21, 2009, 07:48:04 PM
I am using the TC Electronic G Sharp. It works great in the loop without the Klein. It has way more capabilities than I can use. I like the fact that it has delay and reverb together. I always use a little of each. The only thing I don't like is that I can't use delay with other effects. The rack is more convenient than pedals to me. I have attached a photo. I keep all the cables plugged into the effects  and store them in the rack case when transporting. When setting up I just pop off the case covers pull out the cables and connect to the amp and power. Takes me more time to get everything through the door than it does to set up my rig.

Better hurry up and get on the list. Fortunately you have the OTS to play while you are waiting for delivery!

Got it, all makes sense. Thanks.
14  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Overtone Soundclips on: April 15, 2009, 04:35:35 PM
Thanks Steven,
That's a parts telecaster with very lightly laquered very fat neck and 1 piece very light  swamp ash body cut by USA custom guitars, w Fralin medium powered blues pickups, and Vintique Bridge and neck attachment assembly.  The volume and tone of the guitar are on about 8 and 3 respectively, and the amp is on rock, no boosts, with all knobs about noon, except for the master vol, which is barely on.  kleinulator, minimix w lexicon lxp 1 in the loop and line 6 dd4 on the floor between the guitar and amp goinig into a TWO ROCK12-65 12 inch speaker.
No Boosts? I can hear a bit of clipping or what sounds like a touch of OD that I would not get from my amp with those settings. Is it the Klein that is giving it that little push?  Great touch and phrasing!
15  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: What kind of phase inverter tubes are you using? on: April 15, 2009, 04:27:35 PM
36 & 38 are acceptable. If it sounds OK, there is no need to re-bias. You may want to bring it down some  (to say... 32mA) to extend your tube life, but the effect will be minimal.
