here's another clip: http://snotpope.com/downloads/20_Bones/SissyPig.mp3
the whole band was recorded with 2 overhead  mics. the express used a ecc83 in v1, ecc81s in v1 and v2 and some shitty el34s in v4 and v5

hey I really like that lead singer. Nice!
Her sound reminds me of Gwen Stefani when she was with No Doubt.

2  Tw Clones / LiverPull / Re: Liverpull tube selections on: March 14, 2008, 01:03:52 AM
Check out the new production Mullard el84's. They smoke the jj's! I tried both. They are very affordable too. Same price as JJ's basically.
Tungsol for the preamp.
3  Tw Clones / LiverPull / Re: Expression vs. Liverpull on: March 14, 2008, 01:00:38 AM
I love my liverpull.
It smokes!
Sided by side you may hear a difference, but the Liverpull is very "Expressionlike" to coin a phrase.
They both have that Trainwreck sound for sure.
I chose the Liverpull cause it has a little more flexibility then the Expression.
It growls like an Expression, but it can also be cleaned up, where there option is not so available with the Expression.

I think aot of guys go to the Expression for the el34's. I like el34s but i very much like el84s as well.
The volume certainly is not lacking in the Liverpull. But, the expression is more of a monster if thats what you need.

Guys-

I'm lucky enough to own both a Zendrive & Zendrive 2- I've had Klon/Fulltones/Xotics/Crowthers etc...etc... but I can honestly say the Zendrive is by far the most natural sounding overdrive I have ever used... I've been playing semi-professionally for 28 years... and nothing else has come close to getting a natural mild 'juicy' distortion- can't recommend it highly enough- it's just more 'musical' somehow... I would say in comparing the two that the Zendrive II has a touch more gain & a more beefy low end which I prefer... I wonder if the Zendrive/Overtone combination will be utter Tone Nirvana?  Let you all know when my OT arrives- 6 weeks and counting!

Cheers all! Mitch

I agree with your analysis of the ZD and ZD2. I have both. I would like to sell one to use that cash, but I can't decide which one I would keep. They are very similar, but as you aptly described there are some subtle differences. I'll use one or the other, depending on what I am playing and the mood i am in. I also have had tons of high ends pedals. For me when it comes to natural mild distortion/od, for me its Alf's Zens and Sean M's Eternity.
I also am waiting for my Overtone. Should be going out any day, but I have not been able to reach Nik since Tuesday for an update. Where is he?

Great sounding Amp!
Nice playing too.
What speakers are you playing thru

Chipdog,

I was following that thread with interest as I've been thinking of building an iso cab.  Did you get that one finished?

I have all of the additional parts ready (insulation, mic, goosenecks, shock mount, jacks, etc) and am waiting on delivery of the Cabinet from Bob Burt. Hopefully will have everything put together in a few weeks.

who is bob burt?

ok, here's my stupid question:
for the evm-12l, which is better for the overtone, 8 or 16 ohms. also I assume everyone means the classic 200 watt speaker, not the black label 300 watt?

it would be sweet to see a mark I clone though, wouldn't it. If Nik made it, I would definitely be there.

Hey Chris, please feel free to share those mods!!
I should be getting my overtone the end of this month.
Hmmm, I wonder if Nik could be doing any of the mods before it goes out, or does it require obtaining other specific components?
11  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: overtone no longer available..for now? on: December 18, 2007, 01:27:12 AM
Cool

The BF champ is great, but I find it to be a LOT louder than the 1966-ish BF fender champ I used to have.

They sound quite similar (still, I can't A/B them since I don't have the 66 champ anymore), but the ceriatone has more break up when cranked.

do you find enough of a difference between the bf champ and the 5e3 tweed to justify owning both of them?

Good post, Nik

Good to see you signed up Smiley

Hey, we must think alike. I have similar Ceriatone amps: 5e3, jtm45, liverpull, 18w tmb ef86. I'm curious, How do you like your bf champ? I was thinking about that one.
I love Nik's amps. I'm actually thinkin of getting his jcm800 and plexi 50 to see how they compare to my originals. If I do, based on how my others have sounded, I'll be selling my originals!

I removed my list-took up too much space.
So does my stuff. Lucky I live alone or the wife would have to go

Hey Chuck,

Great review.  It seems we are all having a nice honeymoon with this amp.  There is one thing I've been trying to slightly "dial out" though.  On the OD with the PAB on for the typical RF tones I'm wanting to soften a wee bit of harshness in the upper mids and then the amp will be perfect.  I've been plugging all my NOS ax7 stash (amperex, Mullards, telefunken, Syls, Matsushitas) in V2 and the early 60's Sylvanias are absolutely the smoothest in this amp but there is still a hair of adjusting to do.

Thus...

I've been spending a lot of time over at the amp garage site and have found this fine tweaking of the upper OD harmonics is where the magic occurs.  And the problem is, each amp is different and the guys over there who have been obsessing over these circuits for YEARS have developed the magic touch that gets the last 10th of a percent, that last piece of the puzzle of "the tone" equation figured out.  I think that is what you are paying for when you buy a Glasswerks, Bludotone, Carol Anns, Fuchs.........you buy "in the tone zone" expertise.
That is never what I wanted or particularly expected from the Overtone.  I wanted exactly what Nik provided; an extremely well made ODS amp that gets me to the 99.9% stage.  Hell, this Overtone hangs with ANY of the "big boys" I have ever played,,no question.  The last .1% is personal taste anyway so this is where my OCD...lol......gets to do it's thing.  Now, it's down to component adjustments, pickups, guitar body woods, brands of strings,  seasonal humidity, moon phase and gravitational pull on electrons in my Winged C's.......lol,   yep.....OCD.

Great post!

Love the bit about your ocd, and moon phase, grav pull etc.
thats  right on the money!  Grin Chair Dance
