258  Custom amp building, Prototypes and other amps / Discussion / Re: a dummy load built inside the head cabinet on: August 01, 2010, 08:20:09 AM
I have 2 small amps with this built in (5w and 10w),
it is reassuring, probably harder to do for bigger amps

AFAIK there is another issue which is that someone might plug a speaker in while the amp is on:
as the jack goes in does it momentarily short the ground and tip Huh? Probably depends on socket design.

cheers

259  American Style / 5E3 Tweed Deluxe / Re: what is the actual difference between the two channels? on: August 01, 2010, 08:06:15 AM
in terms of sound they are much more different from each other than modern amps with a bright channel or switch.
The channels interact quite a lot, e.g. when using one of them, turning up the other volume control drastically changes the EQ curve.
On one channel, turning up the tone, the tone rolls off again after 3 oclock, whereas it works as normal on the other channel. these were early bugs in the fender design, which are enjoyed as such by most vintage gear lovers. You can fix these to more resemble modern amps, I found a few fixes when I searched to understand this. I've left mine as-is, why have all your amps work the same way?

see Topic: Volume controls are like toggle switches, to see how controls work

Choosing one of these 2 channels will vary with guitar, mood, day of week.
You can use both at once, but it adds some noise

260  Muchless / DC 30 / Re: DC15 on: August 01, 2010, 07:59:11 AM
I never heard of the DC15, does it switch one valve off for half power?
is this the Creme Brulee? I thought the Creme brulee had only one of the 2 DZ30 input channels, so a DC15 would be somewhere in between

261  Muchless / DC 30 / Re: Lead time? on: August 01, 2010, 07:51:26 AM
I ordered one on June 6th, it is ready now, but I ordered 3 amps at once, so you might get it a little quicker

262  Tw Clones / Expression / Re: Amp shipped - Cab build on: July 08, 2010, 09:27:49 PM
I received word this morning that my amp has shipped.  Thanks Nik !!

I'm building a cab that will also function as a piece of furniture for my family room.

The cab will mount the amp, an attenuator and two 12" speakers.

I have a thread about the build here:

http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/squawk-box/96487-amp-cabinet-furniture-build.html

sounds like a 1960s Stereogram, some of the TWs are reminiscent of that style, like my grandparents had, there were loads in England.
Can you buy one and gut it, and hide the amps and speakers in it?

Cheers

263  British Style / Plexi Lead, Bass, Superlead / Re: Plexi50 1987 Lead With PPIMV or Hotplate on: June 16, 2010, 09:39:22 AM
master volume should work better if you get VVR too

Most attenuators only work well for the first 2 clicks (-4dB and -8dB normally), the THD ones sound way better than the Marshall one (can re-add the bass and top)

For live, Probably best to use VVR+PPIMV a little, + THD hotplate on -4dB or -8dB

For studio, Iso cab it
264  Muchless / DC 30 / DZ30 Hardwood case on: June 13, 2010, 12:22:07 PM
I am getting a hardwood case made from figured wood.
Has anyone got any photos or advice for me?
thanks

265  Tw Clones / Expression / Case for TW Expression on: June 13, 2010, 09:15:40 AM
hi
has anyone had a TW-looking case made for the TW express?

I am getting one made, and I'd value tips / measurements, etc

Can you get knobs with labels on them? would that look wrong?
Is birds eye maple good? is the control panel and front best done with veneer or with full thickness wood and then cutting a strip of it thinner for the control panel?

thanks
Tony
266  Website, Store / General / Re: import duties for the uk on: June 10, 2010, 11:12:02 PM
here's a really good calculator
http://www.dutycalculator.com/calculation/

but really, for the UK it comes to near enough to adding 20% to the cost incl delivery (you pay VAT + 2% or so duty)

267  Website, Store / General / Re: Great amps, good value, frustrating process on: June 06, 2010, 07:34:36 PM
The easiest solution is to use some tracking software, as used in the software industry
use this for free:
http://www.bugzilla.org/

you can configure it to send emails out etc

tbh though, I don't mind the personal touch if Nik can handle his workload

There are always people who will get bitchy, especially if they regard the price they paid for something built in the US as a badge showing how serious they are about music. AFAIK no-one has a better reputation than Nik.

Nik, Just keep doing it the way you know is the correct way....
I couldn't find any genuine-sounding negative reviews anywhere
