here's my champ amp with an M.I Audio TubeZone providing the drive.  You can almost see the back of the amp to the left.

Many amp techs I've spoken to agree that caps either work or they don't.  It's more the values that affect the change in sound than the brand.   I know some people swear by certain brands of caps but I really don't think you'll notice a difference.

Better to spend your money on the output tranny and choke...there's some threads on here about that.

4  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Getting a more blackface clean tone on: March 09, 2009, 10:50:47 PM
With my amp/speaker combination messing around with the toggles and lowering the mid and treble gets me closer to a blackface sound.

Off the top of my head - rock jazz, deep off/down, bright on/up...  treble 3 or 4, mids on 2ish and bass up as far as suits you - 7 or 9.  Also, start with the master on less than 1 so that you're driving the clean ch hard.  It never really breaks up but it seems to do the job.

It's not a BF but it has done the job for me on more than one occassion.  It will depend on how much bottom end your speaker box can prduce too.

7  Community / Chit Chat / Re: Myths and snake oil sales on: December 26, 2008, 12:05:52 AM
I think that if you have a whole chain of top shelf leads, acc etc etc, it might make a difference.  But, the problem is some people believe that one good lead alone will do something magical, then myths start up, and so on.  I bought monster guitar cable, expensive stuff, and hated what it did to my sound.  The cheaper monster 'rock' cable and mogami sounded so much better - more suitable to guitar.

That expensive cable gets used occasionally for bass tracks though, so it wasn't a waste of money - can hear the difference in some applications.

I guess I'm saying that there's usually some truth to the myths, that's why they sound so believable.

Having said that...I hear a lot of stange stories about magical power cables (for amps), leads, etc.

Anyone know much about the monster power lead?  Very very expensive but why?Huh?

It kinda looks like the same thing but there's some componant value changes and a couple of additions here and there.  I'd love to know what it sounds like  Smiley

...also, the 5X3 BIG Deluxe.

Does anyone know about the HRM and the 5X3?  The HeyWhat is a gimme - HiWatt.

I'm thinking of getting the OTS but am wondering about the HRM.  I've also asked Nik, anything he shares with my I'll post here.
10  Muchless / DC 30 / Re: Will The DC30 Do A Decent Clean Sound? on: August 14, 2008, 12:24:10 AM
If you're worried about DC30 clean have a listen to this.  It's unprocessed so what you're hearing is almost what your ears would be hearing next to the amp (only nicer when you're actually standing in front of it...much nicer) - except mics ain't ears or course.

It's got such a dynamic clean that most other amps sound very boring by comparison.  I think it does a better clean than distortion.  It just sounds so alive.
12  Website, Store / Support / Will the DC30 chassis fit a Lightning Combo? on: July 20, 2008, 03:30:26 AM
Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knew whether or not a DC30 chassis would fit into a combo made for Lightning?  Just by looking it would be close but I need the actual dimensions or a 'yes or no'.

cheers
Tim
13  Muchless / DC 30 / Re: C30 Rectifier - 1x GZ34 or 2x 5V4 on: July 09, 2008, 12:53:59 PM
yep, 2x5V4 has made it sound better.  It's subtle but hard to miss...much smoother and distortion sounds better now.

You should be ok... I don't think they'll mind.  Was good to hear it and most of the other guys are gear junkies anyway...so they'll have probably enjoyed.
15  American Style / BF Champ, Vibro Champ / Re: BF Champ, Vibro Champ SoundClips on: April 22, 2008, 06:30:31 AM
I should make a special mention that the overdrive in a couple of the songs is courtesy of Tonerider stomp boxes.

Solid pine and 12inch Celestion Greenback.

The amp itself actually sounds quite good when cranked.  I don't hear any 'flubbery' bottom end that some say the Champ suffers from when cranked.
