19  Ceriatone / Overtone / New Overtone Special Pics (Cream & Black) on: November 06, 2008, 12:20:24 PM
Hey guys,

Just though you may like to see my new Overtone.

Made out of 3/4 birch ply dovetailed and covered in white (cream) tolex and black fender cloth

The birch ply really make the G12-65 shine.  Clearer cleaner tone I think.

I couldn't believe it when when I plugged an acoustic in the FET input.  It sounds like my blue speaker.
Really chimy. I do have older circuit (yet to mod) . Believe it or not I have only just got round to making the cabs for it.  Sat in a box all this time.

regards

Richard

I wonder if you could point me at a source for a Gold cheap, in the UK. Thanks

Try Appian Acoustics (www.loudspeaker.co.uk) Tele 0141 6363700 speak to Frank.

He will do one delivered to mainland UK for £135 all in.

I like the alnico mix..Blue and G12H30 etc.  A greenback is basically a G12H30 that breaks up sooner, so try an alnico.

For wattage reasons a Red Fang at 30W would give you some sparkle that's for sure...Smooth breakup up too.  Or an Alnico Gold Celestion.  I can get a Gold for the same price of an eminence in the UK .

Some guys have used these Golds already with the Overtone in a pairing.

They could be easily sold on after if you dont like 'em.

Thanks to Gbergl and fullerplast I tried an EVM-12L.  Grin

It is great as a 1 x 12.  Space was an issue for me so this served my purpose and it is full sounding.  The g12-65 is nice but not as versatile..

The EVM .....What a speaker too!  Built like a tank.......

I'm so glad I came across this speaker.

100w  !!!  Huh?   What did you say?Huh?

50W is so loud, it would be OK for anything i think.  I think a 30W version would be nice .

25  British Style / 18 Watt / Re: 18 watts question on: June 05, 2008, 01:30:42 PM
I have the DC30 and I use a Dario Miniwatt EF86 tube.  Superb tube...spend money here it is worth it!

In fact if you are going for EF86 type amp go for a DC30 as it can be used at half power (15w) and is a superior amp in every way to the 18W. The cleans are out of this world and it is way more versatile.

The 18W does have that nice grinding Marshall crunch at low volumes. The DC has a good crunch but that Marshall crunch is sweeter i think.

Thanks Jack for all your help....I will now get on and order my parts... I'm excited to hear the cleans are improved.  I too like the SRV lenny vibe with a strat

What do these mods do? Tonewise?

I have an overtone and interested in what the mod does for it

It is an amazing amp...I have one too.  Love the cab looks fantastic.

The stock trannies are incredible.  I wouldn't change Nik's transformers either.  This amp is incredible.

Try an Alnico Blue Celestion and G12H30 (both 8ohm) wired in series at 16ohm for the most amazing sounds you have ever heard...simply breathtaking! Really!

Enjoy it... You'll be GASing for more amps soon. You are now infected with the Gear Aquisition Syndrome.!!!!

Herby660 is right on.  JJ EL84's are great new production tubes.  Your money should go into selecting some good pre's.

Cheers ChrisL

I have tried all sorts of EL84's and Teslas are great.  The pre amp valves seem to make all the difference.

I have six mullard valves from the 60's which i move around my amps, when I want that special sound.  Otherwise Tungsol's are good, best newer tube as seem richer than most other.  The JJ preamps just seemed less harmonic to me and colder more sterile when clean. Full blast there is harmonic loss but it is less noticable.
