1  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: 2 - G12H30's in a 2X12 Cabinet on: February 18, 2009, 01:43:18 PM
Thanks, John. I do recall your post in the other thread.

Yeah, the G12H30/V30 is the most talked about combination I suppose, and I'll most likely have that combo eventually since I have an "extra" G12H30 along with the two in the 2X12 cab I have.

The OTS head is scheduled for delivery Friday, so I'll have some first hand (or first "ear") analysis soon.

My ultimate goal of late is to get down to about three really good amps in head form, and several cabinets that I can mix and match with them. I'm selling off the "almost there" amps I've collected to make room for just three "fully there" amps (plus my modded Valve Jr for Marshally practice at volumes that won't cause the neighbors any heartburn).

The plan starts with the OTS, next an 18 Watt w/EF86, and probably a 5F6A Bassman to round it all out (the latter two I hope to build from Nik kits). Since I already have 2-Mojotone MP12RHD alnico's, 2-Weber C12N's, the 2-G12H30's, plus the "extra" G12H30, about all I'd probably want in addition would be a V30 (or WGS Veteran 30), and perhaps a pair of WGS ET65's. I can't imagine anything I wouldn't be able to cover with that and a good SM57 or two. I've even collected all the NOS tubes I'll need for the 18 Watt and the Bassman (plus NOS pre-amp tubes for the OTS) Heck, with a good bass speaker/cabinet the Bassman could even double as what is was originally designed for...bass guitar (they actually use them for bass...?  Grin)

I'm tired of being just a common street Gear Wh*r*...it's time to move up to a more sophisticated level... Wink

Now if I can only live long enough to see my plan through to completion...and stay solvent long enough as well... :Smiley

Well, they're actually the re-issues, so they won't have that same character.

At 100db efficiency they'll still be loud I'm sure, but I was wondering about the kind of balance I might expect accross the tonal spectrum.

I know that the Vintage 30/G12H30 combination works well, and I may end up doing that. But in the meantime, I'll be using the two G12H30's together.

In a week or perhaps a little longer, I'll know first hand...

Has anyone tried 2- G12H30's in a 2X12 cabinet with an Overtone Special?

If so, what kind tone do you get from that set-up, and more specifically, how are the high frequencies?

I've bought an OTS used that should arrive next week sometime and I have a 2X12 Avatar semi-open cab set up like this. I'm just wondering in advance what kind of tone I might expect.

If you don't like the Celestion G12-65 I don't think you would find an knockoff to be any better. Some people really like the 65 and Robben Ford uses them, so there's that endorsement. I have 2 x12 cab with them and they sound muffled with the OTS to me. I use a 2x12 cab with a Vintage 30 and A G12H30 and it sounds excellent. The V30 brings out the highs and mids while the G12H30 sounds great by it self , but gives a full punchy low to the combo. I also have a 1 x12 cab with an Eminence Wizard which is basically a 75W version of the G12H30. It sounds every bit as good if not better than the G12H30 and at 103dB, it holds its own when combined with the 2x12 cab. Just two of many possibilities.

Thanks for the reply, John.

Yeah, the G12H30/V30 combo is almost universal in it's application, it seems. I have two G12H30's in a 2X12 cab right now, and a "spare" 16 ohm G12H30 just sitting. So, I'll probably just pick up a V30 (or possibly a GWS Veteran 30) and try that out. I've got a few other possible combinations to try, everything from the afore mentioned speakers to a pair of older 25 watt Weber C12N's (but, that's on the edge in the power handling capacity), a pair of Mojotone MP12RHD Alnicos, and even an older Eminence Legend 125 that I could pair with something else.

There's no substitute for trying various combinations and deciding what's best to my ear, but learning from other's experiences is helpful for direction in where to start.

I can't say enough good things about GabKits.

I have their OTS 1x12 Combo Cabinet loaded with a Warehouse Guitar Speakers ET65 for my grab and go rig.

It sounds excellent with my Strats for SRV tones and for RF sounds with a Les Paul.

This speaker has a full, smooth combination of highs, mids and lows.  Excellent all around tone with power handling to keep up with 50 watts.

I have tried a number of speakers with my OTS and have settled on this for my go to 1x12 set up.

Here's why:

EVM 12L - Expensive, heavy.  I see why some people love these, but it is definitely not for everyone.  Very "in your face" tone which is somewhat typical of high wattage speakers.

JBL D120 - Hard to find.  Pricey.  Nice.  A bit too much headroom and not enough compression for my taste.

Celestion Vintage 30 - Great all around speaker.  One of my favorites.  Plenty of highs if you want them.  Perhaps a tad light on the lows.

Hellatone 60 - "Broken in" Celestion vintage 30 from Avatar.  Great Bargain.  Another of my faves.  pretty much the same as above, just a little easier to find the same tone at a slightly cheaper price.

Warehouse (WGS) Veteran 30 - Another great deal for the Vintage 30 tone at a reasonable price.

WGS Retro 30 - 75 watt version of the Veteran 30.  Much stiffer sound.  Not for me.

Weber Alnico Blue - In this same vintage 30 ballpark as above.  Excellent top end. Very nice but a bit pricey.

Celestion G12M "Greenback" - Also nice but arguably underpowered for a 50 watt combo.  A little less high end than the above speakers but smooth with nice breakup.  The sound clips of the WGS version of this speaker also sound real good.

WGS ET65 -  You see the Celestion G1265 mentioned a lot on these forums.  I decided to try one of these just to see how it sounded and was surprised that it became my number one choice for using just one 12 inch speaker.  It sort of has the character of the Celestion G12H30 and Vintage 30 combination that I use in my Koch Multitone 2x12.  This combo has become very popular with a number of builders for mixed 12s in a 2x12 cabinet, and with good reason.

I had expected to like one of the Vintage 30 type speakers the best, but when It came down to picking just one speaker for the combo cabinet, this turned out to be the one that delivered the goods for me.

I know I'm trying to resurect a somewhat old thread, but given what you said about the WGS ET65, how do you think a 2X12 cab would sound with two of these speakers together? The WGS speakers do seem to offer an awful lot of bang for the buck while at the same time offering some tonal versatility not found in the parents that these clones were designed to emulate.

To be a little more specific, do you think from your experience with them that  2-ET65's would add enough high end to satisfy someone who was disappointed in the lack thereof in a pair of the actual Celestion G-12-65's?
