Ceriatone / Overtone / Should I sell my Overtone?
|
on: June 13, 2011, 03:57:07 PM

Guys- I have a 50W Overtone, couple of years old, works and sounds great. I added a feature: I brought the relay coil voltage for the channel selector out on a jack. I built a Klienulator with a loop selector added to it. The Kleinulator is always in the effects loop of the amp. The looper section selects one set of send/return jacks when the amp is in clean mode and another set in OD mode. My question is whether I should remove this feature if I decide to sell it or leave it in and include the klienulator/loop selector with the amp? Any thoughts?

Guys- I thought I would put up a photo of the pedal board I use with my OTS. The board is powered by a 9v Makita power tool battery. The charger mounted underneath has been modified to act as a receptacle for the battery. This board is so quiet, it's amazing. There is no hum from the battery so the noise floor is 8db down from the Dunlop Brick, it's dead quiet.
The mini-toggle on the connector plate selects either the battery or the Dunlop brick (never had to use the brick yet). The OTS footswitch connects to the amp via the 6-pin XLR connector so that its cable is detachable. The top hinges up for service. After years of having pedals mounted to an open board and the settings disturbed between gigs, this is working out great! The OTS footswitch has been modified so that it switches in the Barber Burn unit (or any loop) when OD mode is selected.

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: A Vertical 2x12 for the Overtone (schematics request) and Speaker Choice

Hey Nathan- I am using a vertical 2X12 cabinet that I built myself with two Alnico Tone Tubbies. The top section is open-back which provides great dispersion and the bottom driver is sealed providing good bass output. I am very happy with the range of tones I'm getting, actually had non-musician folks at a club gig comment on the tone...pretty cool. Stan

Well...each toggle switch (rock-jazz, bright, etc) can be replaced with a relay, I don't think there any simpler way to remote those functions. The power supply that runs the two onboard relays will probably handle a couple more. (I have it running one additional one now). There is also some power supply dedicated to the FET preamp which many people never use...you could re-purpose that if you need more. As far as connectors goes, a good option is the XLR type. Neutrix makes them with 6 conductors (NC6MP). I think some of us have replaced the DIN connector with those. Nik (or maybe somebody else) could tell us how much current is available from the regulator that runs the onboard relays...

I replaced the OD switch with a 3PDT and use the additional poles to switch a stompbox into the signal path.
I also added an additional external DPDT relay (with its coil in parallel with the internal OD relay) This relay selects one of two effects loops; one for the clean mode and one for the OD mode. This allows a dedicated effects loop for each mode without having to step on multiple switches. By adding the pole to the footswitch and the external loop switcher, I can have a stompbox (or several) and a rack processor switched in automatically when I step on the OD switch. When I turn off the OD the stompbox is out of the circuit and the clean effects loop is selected. This works really well playing live. I have attached a photo of the loop switcher.

Thanks ic racer. So you just physically moved the wires on the "stock" OD relay to look like this drawing? (this is looking down at the relay from the top)? Then you re-wired the toggles and the foot switch as well? Any issues?

Sounds like fun. That box is actually a loop switcher. It selects one of two loops connected to the EFX loop of the OTS based upon which mode the amp is in: clean or OD. Currently the BBE and the reverb are in the path when in clean mode and just the reverb in OD. The reverb has enough output gain, and its input impedance is high enough so that a kleinulator is not needed.
About your crossover idea-the only caution I might have is it sounds like you're planning to sum the two outputs of the xover together? Depending on the design of the xover used, you may need to isolate them from one another with a mixer stage, it's unlikely that it will be happy with a "Y' cord type of connection. You may be better off with an EQ of some kind if what you really want is powerful tone control...just a thought.

Here's some more photos of the completed amp. This is working really well for me, I can sit this box directly on top of my cabinet (two alnico Tone Tubbies in a custom-built cabinet one open back, one closed). plug in and go. I have the OTS footswitch mounted on my pedal board. Simple, and sounds great! btw- this forum has been a huge help to me as I was building this amp, thanks to everyone for all the great information.

Thank you very much. It's not a very good photo though. It is made from curly maple (the bottom is MDF). I build guitar bodies and happened to have a piece large enough on hand. It is just rubbed with oil so minor wounds from gigs can be taken care of easily. Thanks again,
