Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Who's running dual amp setup?

Hi,
long time since my previous posting...
I'm running 2008 OTS 50 and '68 Marshall plexi 50W parallel to vertical Mesa 2x12 metal grille cabinet from early 90's. OTS is feeding the ported thiele part of the cabinet, which has 80W Celestion Century G12 inside. Marshall is feeding the open-back top portion of the cabinet to Mesa C90. Splitter box (guitar signal) is Roger Mayer Crossroads.
Both amps contibute to the sound at the same time. First I dial a good crunchy tone from the Marshall alone with more mids, than bass or treble. Then I fine-tune a good lead sound from the OTS alone. When I combine the sounds, I'm adjusting the Marshall to slightly dominate the rhythm sound for crunchier rock tones. Here OTS clean channel provides most of the bottom end and the high end "air". For solos, I kick in the lead channel from OTS.
My experience is that if I try to make both amps sound great on their own, the comibined tone is not as satisfying as when I "layer" the sound of the two amps, with different tonality.
There are couple of things that make this setup less optimal: 1) switching guitars between songs takes more time, if pickup outputs vary a lot 2) requires two channels from the PA
Despite of the shortcomings, the resulting sound is extremely addictive. The setup is also fairly portable, with two heads and one small-ish cab. Since we don't gig so often, I haven't made any changes to my setup for a long time (therefore, no visits to this forum either...) Now I'm looking for an alternative for the C90 though.

To be honest, I've been using T.C. Nova Delay with my OTS for a long time, because it fits into the loop without any add-on boxes. The sound is OK, but it's not very user friendly. The SDE-3000 has a solid button for every function and despite it's age, it sounds terrific. Not to mention, it's also "period correct" with the early 80's -style OTS

Many thanks for the schematics bluesfendermanblues! Looking back, it shoud have been perfectly clear - LNF = Local Negative Feedback. I'm planning to build a Kleinulator during the Christmas break (your mods included). All this trouble only because of Roland SDE-3000 rack delay

Ouch, what I mean is that when you build "LNF circuit on FET2", where and how these components (10M, 220n, 10M) are supposed to be 1) laid out 2) in relation to the FET2? 1) "phi" shape? T-shape? Something else? 2) On the grid side? Ground side? Ouput side? I hope I'm not the only one who is wondering this...

Dear all,
I'd like to hear your comments to the following mods done on Michael W. Kliens 'Kleinulator'.
- bridged/removed the 33k input 'grit resistor on FET1 - removed the input 220p cap on FET1
- bridged the 100k input 'grid' resistor on FET2 with a 1.1n cap. = D'lator HP freq (1446 HZ) - Added the LNF circuit, (10M+220n+10M) on FET2 - Changed the 1M input-to-ground resistor, on FET2, from to 220K
Using the Kelin i series, with a couple of pedals - a T-REX 'roommate' and T-REX 'replica'. I sounds nice and compresses nicely - even with the pedals off.
Settings - both bright-switches off - 'Mix' at 5 o'clock - 'Send' at 12 0'clock - 'Return' at 12 o'clock
Pedals adjustet to unity gain.
Since, I don't have a dumblator, it would be interesting if someone with both the klein and a d'lator clone, tried the mods on their clone and reported back about how the sounds compare. Due to the compression added by the mods, I have a feeling that its pretty close.
Erwin_we, Steven_nl? others?
Hi bluesfendermanblues, otherwise your mod appears very easy to experiment, but what is the "LNF circuit" like???

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: G12-65 vs EVM-12L

Speaker preferences have been discussed in this forum over and over again. If you prefer G12-65s, use them.
I would prefer 65:s for distortion (rounds off the sound) and EVM for cleans (more high end sparkle). Neither of the speakers is optimal for both sounds (IMHO).

Hi,
I thought the same way when I got the amp 1,5 years ago - too bright and too much gain in the lead channel. The first thing I did was to turn the internal trimmer to 9:30 (clockwise)
For the first month I tried to get used to the controls, which effect the sound in very different way compared to typical old-school guitar amps. After a few months the sound got much much softer. Of course I also learned how to use the amp...
After about one year of regular use I knew what I liked and what I didn't like in the amp. The lead channel was too bright to my taste, I compensated it always from my guitar while soloing. Then I decided to make the snubber mod, which tamed the highs nicely. I also turned the internal trimmer to 10-ish.
What you are describing makes me think, that the amp has not seen much use. Perhaps the former owner did not have the patience to "burn it in" and just passed the thing on?
In my opinion, the most important control in this amp (after the rock-jazz switch) is the volume, which affects a lot to the behavior of the rest of the controls. With single-coils, you should be able to open up the volume to 7-8 and still dial in great clean tone. Then just start experimenting with the overdrive settings.
I have pretty bright-sounding cab (V30 & Celestion Century), but I'm getting great cleans and smooth lead tones with OTS - with both humbuckers and single coils. My only complaint is that the volume jump between clean and overdrive is not big enough with some preamp settings (even with ratio dimed).

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: TC Nova delay with OTS
|

Hi guys,
I've had OTS since late May, and Nova Delay since August. Delay is in the loop and I have it on the floor next to the footswitch. I decided to try it, because my vintage AD-9 delay sucked some tone when I had it in the loop.
I have no complaints about the delay sounds. Because the amp itself is a bit on the bright side, the longish cables compensate the final result a bit. No Kleinulator.
Proper working of the ducking effect in Nova delay requires a calibration procedure, and for that I need to remember how to activate it in the delay unit. I need to do this every time I change my settings to different playing situations (gig, home, rehearsals...). If the loop would be before master volume, I wouldn't have to worry about this. For the basic delays, the level calibration is not that critical.
I haven't tried other delay pedals with OTS so I cannot say if Nova is better or worse, but it works fine for me. It's a keeper.

Hi all,
I placed my Overtone order last Tuesday. For me this is an act of blind faith - the clips in the net and the fact that some Overtone owners are putting their dumble clones (such as fuhcs) for sale have convinced me to take the plunge.
As a totally newcomer to this amp brand, I wonder whether all Ceriatone amp models have received similar, excessively enthusiastic welcome? I'm hoping to find it out after my 8 weeks waiting... The buzz was similar when Boogie released their Mark IV amp (more than 15 years ago).
