Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Possible HRM to Bluesmaster conversion?

I have both. They are different enough to justify having both, but they are clearly similar. BM with Alnico is lovely. More typically John Mayer HRM with EVM is cleaner, but less 60s Fender. More typically SRV I'd have the BM if I had to keep one
I never noticed the pull switch on the HRM OD Level before. I think I would prefer the opposite! I need to set the trimmers
Cheers

just tell Nik what you want to play like But tbh these are the most flexible amps I've ever used, so I think no customisation is really needed If you want a JM sound, I thought the Bluesmaster HRM might be better. Depends if you like ultra-clean fender sounds through an EVM12, or blackfacey sounds through Alnico drivers. I like both, so got a BM and a plain HRM

Actually, if he tries a good, broken-in Bluesmaster 100, he might well like it as much, if not more, than the Two Rock.
In my humble opinion, the Bluesmaster cleans are a benchmark. I totally see Matt digging in that boosted clean channel, & getting mesmerizing tones!
(But you do need the 100 watts version, it's not really a loud amp in the clean channel)
I would have thought so too, but in interviews he says he doesn't like the crystal-clean sound, and likes it a bit more ermm.. unclear When I bought a CD at his gig, I asked which of his pedals he'd most recommend. I just wanted a nice one to try, but he fairly told me it would not replicate his sound. Anyway, it was a Providence Stampede, and when I got one, I found that it somehow crisps up a fender super, so maybe he starts dirty, and uses a pedal to get cleaner Personally I prefer to do it the other way round I didn't think the £4k two rock I tried was in any way better than the HRM 100, but really - why should it be?

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Can anyone offer a brief TONE summary between the different OTS types please?

Now I have an HRM100, and it is much cleaner than the BM50 Is this normal, or did the builder change something?
By my experiance I would say that's normal... hi mckinku, you had previously said "Overtone Skyliner HRM 100 Clean tone is practically the same as OTS or S&M. " But the OTS I had was much less clean than this HRM100 I just acquired Not complaining, just want to know what advise to give others, the OTS was built by Nik, the HRM100 by MJW

British Style / JTM 45, 50 / Re: Using a JTM45 at low/high volume

the jtm45 is awesome, but needs full volume to develop its character that said, using it at home with a really good boutique OD could crack the level issue, and leave you with a proper amp for live use. How about a Lovedrive Eternity burst or clone? I really doubt that MV or an attenuator would be as good. I had power scaling on 3 amps, no joy for me. I've tried all these, I now use pedals, after originally abandoning all the crappy pedals in the 90s - today's boutique pedals have killed the myth that only power stage OD is musical, I am now very critical of some amps for their OD offering, contrary to my valve-amp-preferences, the very best pedals can more than match the OD provided by many amps
For quieter Marshall tones, the Ceriatone EF86 36w TMB is excellent. pre- PI master vol though, but more into ACDC tones I think, and switchable to 18w Then the EF86 channel adds a very different channel.
btw I know Marshall build quality is lower, but for quieter fun at home, the Class 5 combos are worth a try

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Anyone Using a Zendrive (or derivative) with Their C-Tone?
|
on: August 29, 2012, 10:42:01 PM

I have a BM50. I like the internal OD set to a modest amount of grit, but not Santana-type OD
When the BM50 is set to ultraclean I sometimes use a Zendrive 2 with it, works very well for slightly more driven tones For just a little grit, a Klone for feel but more grit, a Honeybee clone, backing off the vol with this is very Mayer I think
I could ditch the rest and stick with these 3, but they are all doing something different, so choosing would be hard. All excellent for playing JMayer-range of sounds on a strat
I tried a Zendrive v1.0. very nice, but the v2 is nicer

bear in mind that running 2 different speaker types in parallel does not have predictable results, since the impedance of each driver varies with frequency, each driver will not have a 50% share of the signal at all frequencies. i.e. this will not sound the same as 2 identical amps run into the same 2 drivers individually. It usually takes a lot of trial and error to find a pair that works well. You might be well advised to copy the Matchless/Badcat approach, or anyone else that sells mismatched 2x12s

AFAIK all "normal" guitar speakers colour the sound a lot, but in different ways, probably 20x as much variation between models and brands than you'd get in hifi speakers Very few are as clean and uncoloured as the EVM12.
Certainly it's not just Celestion with this type of colouration (which for most amps is usually considered a good thing)

Muchless / DC 30 / Re: Anyone use an Alnico speaker with their Dizzy?
|
on: July 24, 2012, 09:57:12 PM

Hi, enjoying my Dizzy 30. currently running it into 2 1x12 cabs with vintage 30's. As ever, always looking for the perfect tone I was wondering if anyone had ever tried a cab with Celestion Alnico golds? The blues I guess would be nice but at only 15 watt rating it would mean I would have to use both cabs all the time rather than for some gigs traveling light with 1 cab.
I know the G12 H and the V30's seem to be the way to go but was just looking for a different slant. I play the amp on the 12 AX7 channel exclusively with the vol on 2.30 and no master engaged, treble around 1.00 and bass around 11.00. I play a tele and use no effects. The amp is breaking up with the guitar vol on full but cleans up real easy when backed off. My tone is close to Robert Cray's.
Thanks.
it sounds nice with a gold or a fane axa better with a real matchless mismatched pair though
