1  Ceriatone / Overtone / GIANT Clean Tones on: August 04, 2016, 06:16:16 PM
To my fellow lovers of quality tube amplification, hello! For those uninterested in background: Go ahead and skip to the second paragraph.  This is my first post on the Ceriatone Forum and one that I've been looking forward to, as the past few weeks of browsing here have left me pretty impressed with the level of knowledge you have as a community.  First a bit about me.   I'm a real gear junky, and have had the stinkiest, gnarliest G.A.S. around  for well over a decade now.  In years past this related to both guitars and amps, but has thankfully been applicable to amps only as of late (after years of searching, I'm more or less certain I'm a strat player now).  I've owned most amps or amp styles at one point or another, and for a few years now have settled in on larger Fender amps with reverb (vibroverb, twin). I mainly play rock and roll of the softer variety and sometimes fake a little jazz, but also branch into other genres from this era as well.  Think if Steely Dan, more soulful/easy going Stones tunes, Gram Parsons, "New Morning" era Dylan, a touch of "Good Old Boys" Newman, and the very occasional dose of Iggy Pop's frenetic energy were rolled up into one act.  This is what I strive for, though admittedly always fall short of, achieving.  I like to approach this music with a big ass clean tone, then get my versatility from my fingers, reverb, and the occasional light drive or fuzz for leads.

So now the gear!  As previously stated I've played and loved Fender Reverb amps for years, but I often feel like they are missing thickness sonically.  I don't mind using a reverb pedal, but other than that and mayyyyyybe the occasioal fuzz I really don't like using pedals and therefore don't want to use anything to "thicken" my Fenders. My search has led me to the JM, SSS, and Hey What?  All of which seem to have the thickness I believe Fender lacks.

So two questions

1). Does ANYONE have some really good JM clips?  Info on the forum is limited.  And although I know Nik builds an amazing amp...the demos can be very hit or miss. The Ceriatone demos for the JM sound, to my ears, a bit thin and harsh, two things I know this amp is NOT known for being.  So, any help here?  Really need some solid clips.

2)  Assuming the JM really does sound like its counterpart (TR JM Sig), which amp do you prefer for HUGE clean tones, and why?  Options are below.  I know all come in both 50 and 100, and I know 100 generally sounds bigger at any volume, but I'll take input from whatever wattage you have experience with to hopefully broaden the available response population.

JM 50 or 100
SSS 50 or 100
Hey What 504 or 103

ANY info helps, as I can't play any of these and don't want to go through the circus of buying and selling three times to find the right one.

Help me Ceriatone Forum, you're my only hope.

Christian James
