I built a Dizzy30 and have added a reverb unit that I had, it is an older tubeworks RT-921 dual reverb rack unit and am able to not have to use the klienulator as it has a buffer in it and is two channels so you can have different settings on the clean and gain channels.

I have built a small test jig for a Lightning and presently going to add a reverb to it, I am going to copy the Chieftain schematic to start. It looks to be very similar to a fender layout. I am also thinking about comparing it to a the solid state driver from the Craig Anderton Stage Center Reverb.

This may take me a while, but will let you know which is lusher and more quiet or what I use.

The deed is done and what a improvement. We had a power brake on it before , but the amp still lived in the garage.

I built a nice cabinet so it could be a piece of the den with looking like something that belonged there. Ian has other amps to travel with.

Like anything you do the first time I would install it a little different the second. For some reason I ended up with a populated  Fixed bias board with the dual pot ( I bought it a year ago). I installed it under the Power cap board with the FET sinkeded to the chassis there. When putting the cap board back on found the trimmerpot too tall to secure one end. If it was the right board it would be OK.
I also removed the Master ckt and installed the remote pot in the master hole.

If I did it again I would use a single Pot ( A ganged pot  came with it), and soldered the Fet so it would be the lowest profile to go under the cap board. Also order the right board in the first place (My Fault).

Final conclusion is the amp sings, before it was so loud the drum heads and glass and everything in the garage resonated. In a closed room without allot of odd shaped reflecting walls, you can really hear the attributes of this ckt. This is a lifetime amp.

The 4 tubes with the VVR is a sweet sound. I was thinking about a 18 watt with a VVR, but now thinking of a 36 watt with a VVR. This could be a whole new thread!


PS - the Gain channel with an LP and a Green Ringer (Christmas present) is a good sound.

PSS- I also installed Mogami shielded cable when I had it apart. There was a hum that showed up only once in a while, crossing my fingers on this one.

I see you did the full amp installation. Did you have a final schematic mod? I was going to do just the B+ mod. As I thought I could get into a little trouble. But now will think about going the Full Monty.

I noticed that there is a lot of changes made on the power section of the layout on nicks website. That was for both the Dizzy 30 and the Lightning.

I have not been able to locate on the forum of why they were made and what they do. Can someone explain?

I am getting ready to actually start looking at mine to see where I can reduce some noise.

I am enjoying the learning process. I am now understanding the difference in details from good tone to great tone, and reliability. I would really appreciate seeing a bulleted list of lessons learned (or Do's and Dont's) to help clean up my projects and notice the difference. There is so much knowledge and so little time.

You caught that. The red wire fell off the speaker and is hanging out by itself. You reminded me of the dreaded morning where it worked the night before and not the next day. I just had to squeeze the spade lug to made it a tighter fit.

The phase switch does work, but to me just does not sound natural.

Here is a build I did for my son Ian. I like woodworking and electronics and my son. So I am hooked on projects like this.

Since this was my first build, I made the cab out of Birdseye maple with removable Ernie Ball Casters. The wood face can be removed by two screws from the inside and easily converted to a speaker cab only and have the amp removed to a Head Cab. I call this my Convertible Amp. It is quite heavy and will be working on this soon.

Nick was great help getting me through some noise issues, that resulted in buffering the tubeworks reverb we had connected with a Klienulator.

Tubes - Started with all JJ , changed the EF86 out to a Dario Miniwatt, and made a world of difference.

Nick is the best in the best in the biz. Does he ever sleep. Evan when I sent e-mails in the middle of his night , I got an instant reply.
