First of all, pull the plug while you are still strumming and listen to the signal die out. A lot of times this alone will drain the caps of a lethal charge BUT...NEVER ASSUME!! 6 inches or so for the leads should be plenty. Discharging one of the power caps does it for all but this too I never assume and probe for DC at several points in the circuit. At this point you should not have much or any residual DC above a few volts so your DMM can be set to any scale of DC really. Leave your "bleeder" connected as caps do have a tendency to build a bit of charge even at idle. DO NOT forget to take your discharger off before you power up or you will see smoke.

British Style / 18 Watt / Re: 2x12 cab option?

Is that a 2x12 combo or 2x12 cab and head? I'm sure Nik will give you what you want for the chassis and someone like mojo or avatar can do the cabs. There are other cab builders out there (besides me- I only build for those within Japan) but none are coming to mind. Did you post this on the 18watt.com site?

Yes, V30's suck with this amp...IMHO . I'm really warming up to the RWandB because I've found it works really well with my 18watters too. The Tonespotter was quite nice as well.

wbfree,
Yes, there is a lot to wrap your head around with these circuits. I'm lucky in that I was (am) a bit of an 18watt nut and I learned much from studying that circuit to death which is far more easy to understand.
Since you have a cold (get well soon) and some time print out the great schematic that our brother forum member icracer has so graciously made available. Compare and trace the schematic with Nik's layout so you get a feel for the circuit and the terminology. Welcome to the madness.....bwaaaahhhaaha... If you really want to jump in the deep end spend some time over at the ampgarage in the Dumble discussions. Those guys are all loony bin candidates...lol.

If it's a Blackface Bassman then yes... except 8 bolts. The bolts are supplied. No, it is 2.5 in. Remember this is just the chassis height. Those cabs are long gone.....newer, prettier versions now. And the name of my little hobby cab building business is B Point Amplification.

It's rather simple these days.
I used to use a rig similar to Larry C. or Eric J. of mic into a small mixer (effects in) and 200w amp into two JBL 12 inch 2way speakers.
Now (and I think it sounds surprisingly good) I use a Weber MASS 50 which has an EQed variable line out into a DD20 Delay and then into the effects return on a Traynor ycv40wr with a 1x12 extension cab. Once a balance is set for wet/dry with the volume and eq on the MASS the volume on the dry amp controls both. A little verb from the Traynor and a bit of delay with the separated 2x12's in conjuction with the dry amp makes for a huge, clear sound.

I think the Overtone can do the JCM 800 better than a Plexi or JTM 45 (AC/DC). Give me a pointy guitar, an Overtone with the OD trimmer up, some verb and Delay and we can do some hair metal.

I decided a while back to stick with the RWandB and tune both the Dlite and OT to that speaker. Enough is enough... Just a mini rant but........ Of course ScottL is a fabulous player but after a song or two of that "perpetual foreplay" jazzy OD stuff I need to hear a Major chord or two or I get the overpowering feeling for punching something...lol.
