886  Website, Store / General / Re: Tax and /or Duty in Europe? on: April 05, 2008, 03:42:46 PM
Answered in another thread, but I was using as a basis , my experience in the UK. I doubt you'll get away without paying the import duty (2-3% for all the EU I think), your rate of VAT, plus a handling charge (basically a fee for the convenience of having the courier collect the tax!) I hope you do though!

Cheers

I can't see a problem. I'm intending to do so myself as soon as the kit arrives. As far as I can see, you'll just need to make the sides longer and fix some battening to allow for the mounting of a baffle board. The Grille cloth will be fixed to a lightweight ply frame and will be a loose fit on top of the baffle board held in place by velcro pads just like most Fender amps.

Now what about speaker selection? Im thinking either G12-65 or a G1230H Heritage. Unable to decide. Would appreciate comments and experiences.

Matamp offer suede and leather as an option for covering their amps and cabs, but it is apparently less durable than Tolex! Yes I was suprised, but Jeff Lewis (Mr matamp) told me that. Apparently it is quite easy to apply aswell.

I've bought quite a bit of stuff from Warmoth in the US and every damn bit of it attracts the duties + VAT +customs clearance fee (usually about £10). It usally works out about 20-23% on top of the value of the item and the courier will demand a card payment before delivery. My son has bought some electronics gear from Hong Kong though and got away without paying anything.

No Idea what a cab will cost, the materials aren't that dear to buy, its just the time it takes. As I'm going to make 2or 3 anyway the time taken won't be 2or 3 times the time to make 1. I've already got some black Tolex and some rather nice gold grille cloth that I got from Sid Chaplin. http://www.vintage-radio.com/trg/

When my Overtone arrives I will be making a head cab and a combo for it since I can't make up my mind which to fit it into. Now, whilst I'm not doing this as a business, I have built and covered cabs in the last year, the latest being a Fender Twin split into head and cab, and am thinking that as its not a lot more difficult to make 2 or 3 at a time, I might aswell, especially as I really can't decide between Fender black, Blonde or a Bronco Cocoa tolex (i'd love to get some burgundy colour like Cornfords but I can't find it for love nor money).

Anyway, is there any interest in buying a head cab or a combo in the UK? Whats the general preference for Tolex colour? I don't really want to ship it abroad since that would put me in competition with Nik, which I don't want to do.

Nice, very articulate guitar. Is it a peizo p-up or a soundhole? Amp seems to suit it well.

Thanks. It seems likely that at some time I will want to plug an acoustic in ( indeed I'm toying with fitting my next Warmoth project with Graphtec Ghost peizo's) so the ability to set the level on the FET Input might be useful. I'll move it to the back.

Re:- O/D trimmer, Its only since I've been reading these forums and noting that some mention they don't get the tone they are looking for unless the trimmer pot is set ina particular position, that I'm thinking the ability to tweak it will be useful and there are two spare holes after all, and indeed I could dispense with the ground switch if necessary.

It seems much ignored in comments about the amp. Anyone any comments about the sound and what effect the trimmer pot has, I'm thinking of moving the trimmer pot (aswell as the O'D trimmer) to the back panel.

Thanks guys

Judging by how you play I think you'd like him.

Note the edit to my post toi include the solo .mp3

Have you not heard the track that goes with that backing track, Matt's solo? Not sure if I can attach it here? Try this link

Played through a Two Rock Custom Reverb,  61' Strat (Fralin Vintage Hot), with a Fulltone Tape Echo.

Aahh! I know where that backing track came from! Matt Schofields masterclass in Guitar Techniques. I though I recognised it. Where do you get the rest of your backing tracks from?

Have you ever had the chance to see Matt play? Bloody amazing, especially up close in a small club, and his band are pretty marvellous too.

896  Ceriatone / Overtone / Some questions on: March 27, 2008, 08:33:56 PM
I've been lurking here for a couple of months now, deciding which amp to go with and today finally bit the bullet and ordered an Overtone kit. I was looking at Two Rock amps for a long while wondering how the hell I was going to get one of those (they are $7000 equivalent here in the UK and fetch >$5000 s/h) as my favourite guitarist Matt Schofield  plays one and his tone is immense

http://www.mattschofield.com/

(check him out on YouTube, he is amazing).

Since listening to, especially marinblues, clips on youtube it seems the OT was close enough and certainly a lot cheaper so I decided to jump before the demand gets too high for Nik to cope.

I've noted a few things reading here. The OD trimmer does have an effect on the OD tone apparently so why should I not move that pot to the rear faceplate to make it easy to adjust (ie play with)?

Has anyone got an Overtone going through a 4x10. I've built one with jensen P10R's and really like it, but I just wondered, whats it like with the OT as compared to a 2x12 G12-65 say? What about Celestion Alnico Blues anyone?

Anyway it seems the wait for kits is nothing like the wait for built amps so I'm looking forward to getting soldering soon.

Thanks guys,

Hywel Harris
