811  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: 8 Ohm or 16 Ohm speakers for overtone on: June 26, 2008, 09:12:32 AM
Just thinking here...
BTW this is just a theory, I did not test this, I'm just speculating here.

An 8 ohm speaker has a coil with 8 ohm worth of copper wire wound around that coil and 16 ohm speakers should have double length of same copper wire. OK if that's true, that would make that coil twice as heavy and that would probably have an effect to a final sound of the speaker, IMHO.
All this is crap, if they use different type of wire. So the length/mass of the wire is the same with 16 ohm speaker as with 8 ohm speaker.

Do we have anybody here, which would know that.
 Huh?

812  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Tweaked Layout on: June 26, 2008, 08:59:27 AM
Yes I'm struggling with JZ mods as well. IMO my amp is not to bright, so doing those mods does not make any sense to me. I play clean ch and I use OD ch as a boost (slight OD sound). I actually like the bright boost I get when I engage the OD switch, what I'm missing is a little low end. So what I want is to keep the hi end and add the low end.
I'm still thinking what would be the best approach to achieve that. I'm not sure but I think changing cathode bypass caps would help.

Mods I did so far is OD level pot to 100kL, pre OD resistor to 220K and bright cap to 120pF. I think I'm going to try to change V2b baypass cap from 1uF to 4.7uF and see what happens.

Any other ideas?
 Huh?

Cool thanks man, i thought it might

how would you describe the sort of sounds it throws out?? in the theme of this thread, would you be confident in being able to dial this sort of stuff in whilst using the clean channel through one of those pedals?

OK I'm going to make a bold statement here, 'cause I don't know what amp this guy used...
Regarding gain structure I see no problem, I guess a good old TS9 will do just fine but the sound from OTS would probably be more mellower. This amp sound very bright to me, almost harsh at times (but that's probably youtube sound quality). OTS is not like that, it's much smother IMHO.

Heres a question:

how does the OTS go when you dial in a nice clean tone and put a pedal like a tubescreamer or something to that effect in front of it? has anyone here done this? how does it sound?

i say this because i think you would get a completely different overdriven sound to the one produed on the OD channel, but im curious as to what it would be like...

I'm using Xotic RC & BB and TS-9 with it and it works just fine. OTS takes pedals very well.

OK just for the record...

I played my Overtone next to SF Twin Reverb, next to DRRI and my moded 5E3.

I always wanted a Twin but 'cause it's such a heavy animal I always decided against it. Once I heard my Overtone next to that Twin my Twin GAS stoped right there. Does it sound just like Twin, no it doesn't but it's close enough if you ask me.
Regarding Tweed Deluxe sound the story is similar. With the deep switch on and some tone stack tweaking you can get close. Just for the record, I'm using a Greenback with my 5E3 and a G12-65 with my Overtone. The difference is still there, 5E3 is much more focused and a mid hump is a little different but hey, sound is in the fingers isn't it.

Man, if you already decided to get this amp than wait up until you do and then decide about your next amp.

FYI, the grille cloth looks a bit loose, maybe hit it with a hairdryer again to shrink it back up? Awesome combo. Really nice.

It looks that way on that photo but in fact you can't see it in person. It must be the shadows.
I didn't even use hairdryer... maybe I should and see what happens.
Thanks for the tip.

That`s a great looking amp mate..!
Was it inspired by Robben Ford`s combo, as it looks very similar to his one that`s green & tan..?  Could you supply the weight..? Cheers.

Thanks,

That design is pretty common for D style combo amps.
The color choice.... well it all started with the fact that I had some grill left over... from my champ amp. I thought Fender Brown Face style is coll, so I thought I should try to build something similar. I just went for a little darker brown for more contrast.
I didn't weigh it but when I do, I'll let you know.

Did you you build this cab yourself?

I had a lot of help from my carpenter friend. And leather was a done by a pro, like I said in a couple of posts above.

Maybe this can help you a little....

Even a Greenback has more hi-end compared to G12-65

If you ask me, there was nothing wrong with those first clips.  Huh?
I can only hear, that this amp can do both guitars quite well... just the matter of taste what you prefer.

Thanks guys

took me a few months to find the material and the right people for the job. For example the tolex/leather thing, I took the amp to a pro who does car interior for living. Those stitches are way cool don't you think so?  Wink
... on the end it was worth it.

 Cool

Happy with the sound so far?

Yes I am... cab does not sound boxy or anything like that.
825  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: So, I finally managed to build a cab for my OTS... on: May 24, 2008, 09:54:21 PM
Looks very very nice
Wha's the sound like with the G65-12 (I have a cab with but no amp yet). Do you have the latest amp layout?

Well, I just started playing this amp with 65 speaker... up to now, I was using my Greenback cab. My amp is still stock (first layout), didn't wanted to touch anything 'cause I didn't know how the cab will sounds like.
Maybe later on, I will decide to mod the amp.
