Hey you can do with your amp what you like. If your thing is that tube processor in the fx loop, why not.
Hell, currently I'm mainly using clean ch with pedals and many will say that's a blasphemy too.
I'm not after nobody tone, it's a goose-chase IMO. I like mine and I sticking to it.

 

For clean only I like Mullard (reissue) and Ei but if you mainly use OD ch., I like Tung-Sol.

I bought the leather but I didn't put it on myself.  I took it to a pro, who does car interior for living, you know sits, dash boards, even steering wheel... Do you see those stitches, only somebody who knows what's he doing knows how to do that. 

I bought that leather in some store, here locally. I went there and just hand picked what I thought it would look good.
I think I succeed.

Well up to now, I have not used PAB as well... to boxy as you said. I guess it is usable with the OD ch boost if needed but with clean CH is just not working.
I think I will try that 4.7M resistor myself and see if this will make it more likable.

 

I think I found some info about this on the TAG forum...
Basically you have to replace the 22M PAB resistor with 4.7M and that will fatten things a bit but this will also lower the amount of your boost.

So I guess you will have to decide what you want more, boost or bass.

Sorry to hear about your amp and unfortunately I can't help, I have no clue what might be going on but definitely keep us posted.
We can all learn from things like that.

There are also other possibilities, like treble bleed network on OD ch for example.
