I also saw a couple of Overtones appear on the ebay. That will probably happen more often in the future... but be warned their resale value is very high. The last one was sold for $1300 I believe.

If you are after portability than go with 1x12", if you don't care about that, than 2x12" is your choice and just for the record, I would go with G12-65 . If you're after that smooth D tone, G12-65 will give you that. I also think all those other speakers you mentioned, would do the job just fine.

like the Beatles said, "It's getting better all the time..."  I've been working with the Overtone, swapping tubes, adjusting trim pots, breaking the faceplate, and shocking the crap out of myself...LOL! I am learning about amps, tubes, caps, resistors, and pot...I mean "pots".  I'm sort of getting into this.  Maybe it was the 120 volt shock I took last night while adjusting the OD trimmer, but I think this amp  has put some kind of mojo on me.  I am getting some very cool sounds...even with my Telecaster!  Yes...you all will say "I told you so..."  I STILL don't hear the carlton/ford tone, but what i am hearing is very sweet...inspiring even!

Hey be careful there, this thing can kill you.

Mighty sweet looking rig there my brother!  Great job! Grin

How's the weight overall as a combo???

I still didn't weigh it...   Tongue

It is heavy but not as heavy as Twin  Cheesy,  I like the portability of the amp. Just grab amp in one hand, guitar in the other and off you go. (I do however have a pedalboard as well. So with pedalboard softbag over my shoulder, amp and guitar  Embarrassed,

I need to start using gym more.

Wow.
Those are both very nice cabs.
I am waiting on my ODS head to arrive and was wondering how you guys like the sound from the combo?

I know with some cabs, builders choose a certain type of wood to effect the outcome of the resonance/tone of the cab. How important is the wood choice in this type of combo cab?

Did you use Birch, Pine,  or a combination of woods?

Mine is made from Birch plywood. I just decided to go with plywood 'cause it's proven material and it's tough enough to protect my precious.

This is a quote from SRV him self...

"Some Dumbles - like the Overdrive Special - you 've got to know what you 're doing with them, because they'll get away from you and take you with 'em."
(Guitar Player, October 1984)

These amps are not plug and play... you must learn a few things about these amps before you will be able to get that D tone.

Google is your friend.

Overall I'm happy with the 1x12 cab. It gives me portability and the sound from it works for me just fine... and if I want more, I can just add an extension cab and that's it.

That’s probably because your TONE pot was still 250k. Disconnect it and you will definitely hear the difference in high frequency response.
Tone pot on all my guitars are MIDLE SPLIT ! 500k. in the middle position it switches OFF and on the one side it has 0.04 mkf and on the other side is 3300 pkf. This gives you very interesting tone shaping possibilities.

That is an interesting feature, definitely some coll possibilities there.

...and just for the record, I went from 1M tone&volume to 250k tone&volume. While I was measuring this change, both pots were fully open.

OK what you said here is plain sacrilege and you know it.  Angry

... but hey that vid is f***ing awesome. I own a Godin LGXT and I can pull off some of that stuff but not at that level. It looks way easier to do with that black thing you have  Grin, ... and knowing what you're doing has to do something with this as well I think.  Cool

Awesome playing man, as always.

Hi Mcinku,

Probably because that I’m using Strat with a single coils and for that, bridge pickup sounds pretty powerful and smooth, especially with drive + boost. Also my strat’s volume and tone pots are 1 meg. Instead of 250k.

Looking at your lovely 5E3 deluxe walnut head you can ask same guy to build you a cab as ours. Grin

 Grin
Yes a matching cab would be beautiful but at the moment I have other projects going on here and the cab that I have, does everything I need.

1M versus 250k...
I went from 1M to 250k on my tele and I did some measuring while I did it.
Well my findings were, if your pot is fully open there is no difference at all...
I'm not saying the test I did met all the scientific conditions but still..., here is my result for E string (maybe just slight less hi end but maybe my string attack was a little different as well  Huh? )
