Do you have a C-Lator? If not, i would consider getting one. Acts as a Global master volume, and allows you to turn the Masters up on the amp and control the overall volume. Works pretty darn well!

Yes. most def reverse phase of the rear mics.

What's so difficult about micing and recording a Bluesmaster with an open back 2x12? I have one with 2 different drivers and have no trouble. It's just a basic Fender Based circuit with a lil more low end grunt Wink

Here's an article for ya. pretty much the same word for word as the article i read in Guitar Player Magazine back in high school... 20 years ago Smiley

I have the Bluesmaster which has the seperate masters for clean and OD like the HRM. I normally have the OD master a lil lower than the clean master, especially if i have the HRM bypassed. The OD channel can SEEM louder than the clean due to the increased harmonics, etc. You can try messing with the OD trim as well to get a lil more Drive at lower Preamp volume settings as well. Did you also know there is a "hidden" pull bright on the HRM's OD master volume? You may be able to give that a try and have your Pre volume a lil lower as well.

Conventional wisdom with an open back cab is to mike the front AND the rear. The trick is to find the right location of the rear by trial and error. For the front Off axis usually works best

I have a Two Rock Studio Pro 100, a Fuchs SLX ODS 100, Vibro King (Modded), an HRM Bluesmaster 100 and an FM100 Ceriatone.
I have had a Blackface 65 Super Reverb (original) with all original iron.
My Ceriatone amps are not taking a back seat to the others.......they are ALL great amps Chair Dance

Speaker cabs, tubes, pickups, pedals, room acoiustics...etc all can make an amp sound like heaven or crap.
BTW, I prefer EVM12Ls in 1x12 or 2x12 cabs with open backs.

Dumble sounds aren't for everyone.

Indeed. The S&M, which is what i believe Olaf is having trouble with, is especially quite specialized.

from mciknu: "Overtone S&M Special Skyliner nonHRM
Overall brighter amp compared to standard OTS... clean tone is more or less the same (just a tad brighter), on the other hand OD is brighter, more aggressive sounding. Like OTS this amp likes to sustains. In my experience this amp is not designed to switch from clean to OD on the fly. You have to set the clean and stick with it... than go to OD, set the tone again and play that for a while."

the boldface part might be part of the issue

Yup that's it!!! Very odd that there is such a disparity between the two sets. Have you tried adjusting the pot up and down with the Winged C's in there? Are they both reading 61mv? If they are, and lowering the bias voltage doesn't help i'd say something is off with the tubes, the bias circuit, or the HT circuits somewhere. very strange. i'd try adjusting the bias pot with the winged c's and if that doesn't work try another set and if that doesn't work take her to the tech

Tone is in the ear of the beholder.
D amps may be based on Fender designs, but they are NOT Fenders.
If you want blackface tones - stick with your blackface amps.

But why do you feel the need to insult owners of D style amps who are very happy with them?
Indeed. To me, the closest  D style amp to the fender sound is the bluesmaster, and even then it is more of a mix of tweed and blackface, more into brownface the more i play it. a couple of component swaps and it can be VERY blackface.

Sounds like maybe something is amiss with yours. as Dr Ika stated above, 1000's of folks are happy with the D Clones, regardless of who made em.

I will be getting another amp either the HRM or the 70's voiced DT50 from Bill..

I wouldn't, unless you play on one for a fair time. It might be that this style of amp isn't for you. The clean can be very revealing of poor technique

this is very true. i have gone back to using flatwounds and mostly fingerpicking since i got my BM. The darn thing picks up every lil noise Smiley

My other question..sorry, is this..I ordered a matched pair of SED winged C 6l6gc's and they won't bias lower than 61 mv. The tubes I am replacing are JJ 6l6gc's and I set the bias way low to see if I was doing something wrong, at 18 mv to be specific, and the SED won't go lower than 61 mv. Are these SED's too hot, am I missing something because quite frankly I am ready to throw this amp in the trash. I have had nothing but bad luck. You guys talk about the great tone..I have no tone clean or OD. I can't turn the 100k OD pot underneath on the circuit board past 8:30 or it just gets too noisy, real noisy

Not for nothin, but it sounds like the knob you are turning for the OD trim is actually the Bias pot. the Bias pot usually under the circuit board (the bulk of it) the shaft and knob usually pokes out the bottom. on most dumbles and clones, The OD trim will be a small trimpot basically sitting over V2 and its circuitry with the adjustment slot facing horizontal towards the front or rear of the chassis. There should also be another trimpot over V3 for the PI trim.

Agan, this could be the case and having the Bias too low can cause crossover distorion, and too high can make the amp muddy and undefined, and could burn the tubes up, shorting them out and causing your transformer woes as well.

Again this is just a theory, and i wouldn't be able to prove it without pics of what ya got.

Keep rockin, man! My dad is 72, still works a full time job and rocks as well!

Hope this helps!

Been thinking about it, and honestly, i think the best thing you could do right now at this stage is what i did; drop Nik an email. Tell him about what kind of sound you are looking for, and he can steer you in the right direction. I started out with the intention of getting a JTM 45 or a 5F6a to kinda replace the Sovtek, but after about 3-4 days of emailing back and forth with Nik, he suggested the Bluesmaster. He really knows his amps, and everyone that has talked with him has been nothing but pleased with what he has recommended. Go for it, you won't be disappointed!! Gregg

Thanks, Greg. Yes.  The ball has started rolling.  It has been suggested
I review the C-Lator device.  I want to compare it with the Weber Mass 200.  Toppscore  Cool
Very cool. Just be aware that comparing the two devices is like comparing apples and antelopes. They are not even close to being the same device.

I missed out on it because i didn't have the funds at the time Smiley i never did the whole glam rock rack unit thing. I had one solid state amp, a Yorkville Stage 150GH, kinda wish i still had it. i also had an old blackface princeton reverb, my Sovtek Mig 50 with a custom 4x12, and an Ampeg J12R that i used.

i hardly ever play out anymore. i use my Modded Ceriatone Bluesmaster 50 watter 2x12 combo with a Weber Alnico 1265 and a Weber Neo 12, my Roland JC90, and my trusty Ampeg J12R.

Wasn't the 5D6 one of Fender's first Fixed Bias amps? They are very rare, like hen's teeth if i recall. very nice!
