76  British Style / 18 Watt / Re: 36watt EF86 on: June 14, 2011, 07:21:45 PM
I tried a Watkins Westminster, which had a lovely warm sound
Also I had that Cornell 12/20, which was good but not great

This EF86 36w is very nice, but it's not a clean warm amp, The EF86 channel could use a bit less gain, and maybe something like the cut pot on voxes and Matchless
77  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: FM50 vs OTS50 vs BM50 on: June 14, 2011, 07:41:29 AM
Can you describe the difference in the sound?
thanks
78  Ceriatone / Overtone / FM50 vs OTS50 vs BM50 on: June 14, 2011, 07:00:00 AM
I have a BM50 and an OTS50
I much prefer the BM50, since I can get some lovely ultra-cleans on it, and I prefer the OD, which I set up as a little grit added, with HRM tweaked to roll off treble

The OTS has a less crisp sound, that is useful sometimes, but I am thinking that the BM50 + good boutique OD pedals may cover enough ground to be able to sell it

My question is: is an FM50 different enough that it would be a useful purchase for me? I've seen one for sale from someone I know

That's really odd. Sounds like they have a bad batch of speakers, indeed it sounds like a rub problem. I'd keep pushing until you get what you want from them. I'd say try some other makes like weber or scumback, but since you are in the UK, i'd just keep pressing celestion to make good on their product, especially if it sounds the same in two different amps.

That is my plan
I gave them a list of other speakers I have that work fine, to avoid being fobbed off too easily. I told them I love them, but want one that works.
I have a Weber Blue dog ceramic with doping, which is good, but not as nice as the Gold, I gather their pricier models are as good as anyone's though

I own 2 Golds and I think this speaker is the best speaker out there. Fortunately I have no issues with mine and I'm sorry to hear you have this thing with yours. A friend of mine just bought 50W Tayden for his Bluesmaster and I can't wait to hear how it stands up compared to my Celestion. He tells me it sounds warmer but I guess I need to hear it with my own ears.
Good luck...

I have a Tayden Alnico, supplied in a Wienbrock cab, Which can handle 50w I am told
sounds lovely, bright though I think - a match in classiness for the Gold, but I haven't tried it with the BM50 yet - I'll try the BM50 through it, without turning it up to 11
81  Website, Store / General / Faulty Celestion Gold - what shall I do? on: June 12, 2011, 04:50:03 PM
Last year I bought a new Celestion Gold, to use with my Ceriatone Bluesmaster 50

As soon as it was installed, there was a problem
I used it running clean like a black-face fender twin sound, not at max volume - about halfway, and on certain notes it had a nasty raspy buzz.
I removed it from the cab, and laid it flat facing upwards on a carpeted floor, and it sounded the same.
It sounded the same with another clean amp too
It sounded fine except around the C (261Hz) on the D string and also C (131Hz) on the A string,
And then it rasped unless played quietly, even when all the treble is rolled off on the amp

I paid for it to be returned to Celestion (about £14). After a month, They sent another - this one sounded much better, with just a slight noise - but this got worse over time, so I called Celestion again

This speaker had a small problem when I got it, but it has gotten worse with time
Again I removed this speaker and tested it facing upwards, not mounted in a cab, 2-3 weeks ago, and got the same fault as when it was in the cab - rasping around E on the A string
However, I tested it again after 2 weeks, and the effect had lessened, after storage with the cone facing upwards for 2 weeks.
I have been told by someone  I respect that misalignments are exacerbated by the effects of gravity when the speaker is mounted normally (i.e. the cone pointing horizontally)
My assumption is that it had a slight fault, which has gotten worse with the effects of gravity over time

I paid £14 again for it to go again to Celestion.
The first response I got back from Celestion this time was:
"The speaker has been assessed in our quality department and I have been advised that there is nothing wrong with it and that some amps can cause this phenomena with the Celestion Gold and Blue speakers. We will ask our acoustic engineer to test it next week but unless he finds an fault I suggest you will have to have a credit if you are not happy with the speakers performance as a replacement will only be the same."

Does this sound very likely to anyone? Surely the only reason a speaker should rasp on certain notes when played clean is voice coil rub

Trouble is I love the sound of the Gold with this amp - I have found nothing as good. I have tried and EVM12
I have tried a Fane AXA12 and it's not quite as nice with the BM50. I could use a Tayden, but it's a special order to get a reinforced 50w one.
I thought about buying 4 unused pre-owned Celestion Golds I saw for sale and selecting the best, but the seller wanted £100 shipping (in the UK)

Any advice please?
82  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: BM JM Mod on: June 10, 2011, 07:10:19 PM
EVM-12L   !!!

I now have an EVM12L
I think that although the clean is amazing, it is a little too shrill for the BM50. The EVM12 is the best one for the OTS 50 I think
I prefer the Celestion Gold on the BM50
Personal taste of course!
83  British Style / 18 Watt / Re: 36watt EF86 on: June 10, 2011, 07:33:45 AM
ahh
do most people prefer the 18w-derived amps?
84  British Style / 18 Watt / Re: 36watt EF86 on: June 07, 2011, 10:05:35 PM
I'm perfectly happy with no cleans on it. Some earlier posters mentioned the cleans on it, and I think it's not a clean amp

Is the Cornell 18/20 not similar to the 1974x?
85  British Style / 18 Watt / Re: 36watt EF86 on: June 07, 2011, 08:50:41 PM
Just got my EF86 36W
What a great amp
Lovely Marshall tones, some nice hints of Voxy/DC30 tones on the EF86 channel,
nice power switching and NFB switch

Sounds much better than my old Cornell 18/20

can't say I found any real cleans on here though, regardless of what others have said, maybe my idea of clean is a bit cleaner
86  British Style / 18 Watt / Re: I buy one TMB 18 assmbled kits from one china company kldguitar on: June 07, 2011, 07:49:12 AM
what has this got to do with Ceriatone amps?
I assume it's a cheaper competitor
87  British Style / 18 Watt / Re: Best speakers for EF86 36 watt? on: June 06, 2011, 10:09:52 PM
I picked up the amp tonight
Sounds great through the Badcat 2x12

more tests will follow

How about some new models that aren't replicas?
I think Nik has enough experience and credibility to add a few new designs
And with the new time freed up by dropping kits, 150 models may come quicker

Carr and Wienbrock amongst others have done well in making amps that are based on elements of the heritage designs, but add new design ideas and features that are beyond "mods"

Nik has done it to some extent for a few, but I just wonder what would be possible:
There can't be anyone in the world with a workshop with so many designs being manufactured week-in, week-out.
e.g.

4 Cathode biased 6L6s with an EF86 preamp

Multi valve parallel Single-Ended, with a blend control (I had one made from a BH5 - added a 6L6 to the EL84. It works well, but the voicing needs fine tuning I think)

Tweed Twin with EL34s and more advanced tone switching + low power modes

A low power amp with a blackface JM sound, lots of tonal configurations, but under 10 watts
Too many low-power amps have very basic tone stacks

(Excuse me if any of these have been done, they're just examples)
For modern designs, I think original designs might work better than replicas - no legal issues or sour grapes from owners of copied amps. Perhaps a different branding: "Ceriatone Signature" or something?

My point is, I would rather buy these than USA-designed PCB amps made in China
Is it time to take on this part of the market? You have a huge customer base here already

Hey guys,

Have been in touch with Nik and I'm ordering a HRM BM50... really excited, probs sell the matamp on the matamp forum.

Cheers for the advice, offers and comments! I'm mega excited to get my first Ceriatone!

Good choice, I prefer the BM myself, more of a John Mayer sound
The OTS is more of a Bonamassa sound
90  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Series/Parallel on: June 05, 2011, 07:22:03 AM
It sounds reasonable that dissimilar drivers would vary more in their series/parallel behaviour than matched pairs
